and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically[a] is called (A)Sodom and (B)Egypt, where their Lord was crucified. For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and (C)refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, 10 and (D)those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and (E)exchange presents, because these two prophets (F)had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth. 11 But after the three and a half days (G)a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, (H)“Come up here!” And (I)they went up to heaven (J)in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. 13 And at that hour there was (K)a great earthquake, and (L)a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and (M)gave glory to (N)the God of heaven.

14 (O)The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come.

The Seventh Trumpet

15 Then (P)the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and (Q)there were loud voices in heaven, saying, (R)“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of (S)his Christ, and (T)he shall reign forever and ever.” 16 And the twenty-four elders (U)who sit on their thrones before God (V)fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying,

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
    (W)who is and who was,
for you have taken your great power
    and (X)begun to reign.
18 The nations raged,
    but (Y)your wrath came,
and (Z)the time for the dead to be judged,
and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints,
and (AA)those who fear your name,
    both small and great,
and (AB)for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”

19 Then (AC)God's temple in heaven was opened, and (AD)the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings,[b] peals of thunder, an earthquake, and (AE)heavy hail.

The Woman and the Dragon

12 And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman (AF)clothed with (AG)the sun, with (AH)the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and (AI)was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great (AJ)red dragon, (AK)with seven heads and (AL)ten horns, and on his heads (AM)seven diadems. His tail swept down (AN)a third of the stars of heaven and (AO)cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child (AP)he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, (AQ)one who is to rule[c] all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was (AR)caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for (AS)1,260 days.

Satan Thrown Down to Earth

Now war arose in heaven, (AT)Michael and (AU)his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And (AV)the great dragon was thrown down, (AW)that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, (AX)the deceiver of the whole world—(AY)he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now (AZ)the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers[d] has been thrown down, (BA)who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And (BB)they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for (BC)they loved not their lives (BD)even unto death. 12 Therefore, (BE)rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But (BF)woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because (BG)he knows that his time is short!”

13 And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued (BH)the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two (BI)wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent (BJ)into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished (BK)for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 The serpent poured water (BL)like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. 17 Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off (BM)to make war on the rest of (BN)her offspring, (BO)on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to (BP)the testimony of Jesus. And he stood[e] on the sand of the sea.

The First Beast

13 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, (BQ)with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and (BR)blasphemous names on its heads. And the beast that I saw was (BS)like a leopard; its feet were like (BT)a bear's, and its mouth was like (BU)a lion's mouth. And to it (BV)the dragon gave his power and (BW)his throne and great authority. One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and (BX)the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, (BY)“Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”

And the beast was given (BZ)a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for (CA)forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling,[f] that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed (CB)to make war on the saints and to conquer them.[g] And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation,

Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(A)—which is figuratively called Sodom(B) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(C) For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(D) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(E) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(F) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(G) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days(H) the breath[a] of life from God entered them,(I) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(J) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(K) while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(L) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(M) to the God of heaven.(N)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(O)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(P) and there were loud voices(Q) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(R)
and he will reign for ever and ever.”(S)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(T) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(U) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(V) to you, Lord God Almighty,(W)
the One who is and who was,(X)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(Y)
18 The nations were angry,(Z)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(AA)
and for rewarding your servants the prophets(AB)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(AC)
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(AD) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(AE) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(AF) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(AG)

The Woman and the Dragon

12 A great sign(AH) appeared in heaven:(AI) a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars(AJ) on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain(AK) as she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven:(AL) an enormous red dragon(AM) with seven heads(AN) and ten horns(AO) and seven crowns(AP) on its heads. Its tail swept a third(AQ) of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.(AR) The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child(AS) the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[b](AT) And her child was snatched up(AU) to God and to his throne. The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.(AV)

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael(AW) and his angels fought against the dragon,(AX) and the dragon and his angels(AY) fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent(AZ) called the devil,(BA) or Satan,(BB) who leads the whole world astray.(BC) He was hurled to the earth,(BD) and his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven(BE) say:

“Now have come the salvation(BF) and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,(BG)
who accuses them before our God day and night,
    has been hurled down.
11 They triumphed over(BH) him
by the blood of the Lamb(BI)
and by the word of their testimony;(BJ)
they did not love their lives so much
    as to shrink from death.(BK)
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens(BL)
and you who dwell in them!
But woe(BM) to the earth and the sea,(BN)
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

13 When the dragon(BO) saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.(BP) 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle,(BQ) so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time,(BR) out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent(BS) spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war(BT) against the rest of her offspring(BU)—those who keep God’s commands(BV) and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.(BW)

The Beast out of the Sea

13 The dragon[c] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea.(BX) It had ten horns and seven heads,(BY) with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.(BZ) The beast I saw resembled a leopard,(CA) but had feet like those of a bear(CB) and a mouth like that of a lion.(CC) The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.(CD) One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed.(CE) The whole world was filled with wonder(CF) and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like(CG) the beast? Who can wage war against it?”

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies(CH) and to exercise its authority for forty-two months.(CI) It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.(CJ) It was given power to wage war(CK) against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.(CL)
