“Be glad, barren woman,
    you who never bore a child;
shout for joy and cry aloud,
    you who were never in labor;
because more are the children of the desolate woman
    than of her who has a husband.”^[a](A)

³ Therefore Israel will be abandoned^(A)
    until the time when she who is in labor bears a son,
and the rest of his brothers return
    to join the Israelites.

⁷ “Before she goes into labor,^(A)
    she gives birth;
before the pains come upon her,
    she delivers a son.^(B)
8 Who has ever heard of such things?
    Who has ever seen^(C) things like this?
Can a country be born in a day^(D)
    or a nation be brought forth in a moment?
Yet no sooner is Zion in labor
    than she gives birth to her children.^(E)
9 Do I bring to the moment of birth^(F)
    and not give delivery?” says the Lord.
“Do I close up the womb
    when I bring to delivery?” says your God.

¹¹ After he has suffered,^(A)
    he will see the light^(B) of life^[a] and be satisfied^[b];
by his knowledge^[c] my righteous servant^(C) will justify^(D) many,
    and he will bear their iniquities.^(E)
