¹⁴ “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’

⁶ Now these things occurred as examples^(A) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.

¹⁶ For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,^(A) the lust of the eyes,^(B) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. ¹⁷ The world and its desires pass away,^(C) but whoever does the will of God^(D) lives forever.

² You desire but do not have, so you kill.^(A) You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.

²⁵ “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things,^(A) but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.^(B)
