The Genealogy of Moses and Aaron

¹⁴ These are the heads of their fathers' houses: the ^(A)sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi; these are the clans of Reuben. ¹⁵ The ^(B)sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the clans of Simeon. ¹⁶ These are the names of the ^(C)sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, the years of the life of Levi being 137 years. ¹⁷ The ^(D)sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, by their clans. ¹⁸ The ^(E)sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, the years of the life of Kohath being 133 years. ¹⁹ The ^(F)sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of the Levites according to their generations. ^20 (G)Amram took as his wife Jochebed his father's sister, and she bore him Aaron and Moses, the years of the life of Amram being 137 years. ^21 (H)The sons of Izhar: Korah, Nepheg, and Zichri. ²² The ^(I)sons of Uzziel: Mishael, Elzaphan, and Sithri. ²³ Aaron took as his wife Elisheba, the daughter of ^(J)Amminadab and the sister of ^(K)Nahshon, and she bore him ^(L)Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ²⁴ The ^(M)sons of Korah: Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph; these are the clans of the Korahites. ²⁵ Eleazar, Aaron's son, took as his wife one of the daughters of Putiel, and ^(N)she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites by their clans.

²⁶ These are the Aaron and Moses ^(O)to whom the Lord said: “Bring out the people of Israel from the land of Egypt ^(P)by their hosts.” ²⁷ It was they who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing out the people of Israel from Egypt, this Moses and this Aaron.

²⁸ On the day when the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, ²⁹ the Lord said to Moses, ^(Q)“I am the Lord; ^(R)tell Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you.” ³⁰ But Moses said to the Lord, “Behold, ^(S)I am of uncircumcised lips. How will Pharaoh listen to me?”

Moses and Aaron Before Pharaoh

7 And the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like ^(T)God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your ^(U)prophet. ^2 (V)You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall tell Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go out of his land. ³ But ^(W)I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and though I ^(X)multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, ⁴ Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. ⁵ The Egyptians ^(Y)shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.” ⁶ Moses and Aaron did so; they did just as the Lord commanded them. ⁷ Now Moses was ^(Z)eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

⁸ Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ⁹ “When Pharaoh says to you, ^(AA)‘Prove yourselves by working a miracle,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.’” ¹⁰ So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. ¹¹ Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers, and they, the ^(AB)magicians of Egypt, also ^(AC)did the same by their secret arts. ¹² For each man cast down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. ¹³ Still ^(AD)Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, ^(AE)as the Lord had said.

The First Plague: Water Turned to Blood

¹⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh's heart is hardened; he refuses to let the people go. ^15 (AF)Go to Pharaoh in the morning, as he is going out to the water. Stand on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand ^(AG)the staff that turned into a ^(AH)serpent. ¹⁶ And you shall say to him, ‘The ^(AI)Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying, “Let my people go, ^(AJ)that they may serve me in the wilderness.” But so far, you have not obeyed. ¹⁷ Thus says the Lord, “By this ^(AK)you shall know that I am the Lord: behold, with the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water that is in the Nile, and ^(AL)it shall turn into blood. ¹⁸ The fish in the Nile shall die, and the Nile will stink, and the Egyptians will ^(AM)grow weary of drinking water from the Nile.”’” ¹⁹ And the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and ^(AN)stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, their canals, and their ponds, and all their pools of water, so that they may become blood, and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, even in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.’”

²⁰ Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded. In the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants he ^(AO)lifted up the staff and struck the water in the Nile, and all the ^(AP)water in the Nile turned into blood. ²¹ And the fish in the Nile died, and the Nile stank, so that the Egyptians ^(AQ)could not drink water from the Nile. There was blood throughout all the land of Egypt. ²² But ^(AR)the magicians of Egypt did the same by their secret arts. So ^(AS)Pharaoh's heart remained hardened, and he would not listen to them, as ^(AT)the Lord had said. ²³ Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he did not take even this to heart. ²⁴ And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile for water to drink, for they could not drink the water of the Nile.

²⁵ Seven full days passed after the Lord had struck the Nile.

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

^18 (A)While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and ^(B)knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” ¹⁹ And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. ²⁰ And behold, a woman ^(C)who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched ^(D)the fringe of his garment, ²¹ for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” ²² Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, ^(E)“Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” ^(F)And instantly^[a] the woman was made well. ²³ And when Jesus came to the ruler's house and saw ^(G)the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, ²⁴ he said, “Go away, for ^(H)the girl is not dead but ^(I)sleeping.” And they laughed at him. ²⁵ But ^(J)when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and ^(K)took her by the hand, and the girl arose. ²⁶ And the report of this went through all that district.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

^27 (L)And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, ^(M)Son of David.” ²⁸ When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” ^29 (N)Then he touched their eyes, saying, ^(O)“According to your faith be it done to you.” ³⁰ And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, ^(P)“See that no one knows about it.” ^31 (Q)But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

Jesus Heals a Man Unable to Speak

³² As they were going away, behold, a ^(R)demon-oppressed man who was mute ^(S)was brought to him. ³³ And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds ^(T)marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” ³⁴ But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”

The Harvest Is Plentiful, the Laborers Few

^35 (U)And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. ^36 (V)When he saw the crowds, ^(W)he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, ^(X)like sheep without a shepherd. ^37 (Y)Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; ³⁸ therefore ^(Z)pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to ^(AA)send out laborers into his harvest.”
