42 As the deer ^[b]pants for the water brooks,
So my soul ^[c]^(A)pants for You, God.
²My soul ^(B)thirsts for God, for the ^(C)living God;
When shall I come and ^[d]^(D)appear before God?
³My ^(E)tears have been my food day and night,
While they ^(F)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
⁴I remember these things and ^(G)pour out my soul within me.
For I ^(H)used to go over with the multitude and walk them to the house of God,
With a voice of ^(I)joy and thanksgiving, a multitude celebrating a festival.

⁵^(J)Why are you ^[e]^(K)in despair, my soul?
And why are you ^(L)restless within me?
^(M)Wait for God, for I will ^[f]again praise ^[g]Him
For the ^[h]^(N)help of His ^[i]presence, my God.
⁶My soul is ^[j]in despair within me;
Therefore I ^(O)remember You from ^(P)the land of the Jordan
And the ^[k]peaks of ^(Q)Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
⁷Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;
All Your ^(R)breakers and Your waves have passed over me.
⁸The Lord will ^(S)send His goodness in the daytime;
And His song will be with me ^(T)in the night,
A prayer to ^(U)the God of my life.

⁹I will say to God ^(V)my rock, “Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go about ^(W)mourning ^[l]because of the ^(X)oppression of the enemy?”
¹⁰As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries taunt me,
While they ^(Y)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
¹¹^(Z)Why are you ^[m]in despair, my soul?
And why are you restless within me?
Wait for God, for I will again praise ^[n]Him
For the ^[o]help of His presence, my God.

146 ^[a]Praise ^[b]the Lord!
^(A)Praise the Lord, my soul!
²I will praise the Lord ^(B)while I live;
I will ^(C)sing praises to my God while I ^[c]have my being.
³^(D)Do not trust in noblemen,
In ^[d]mortal ^(E)man, in whom there is ^(F)no salvation.
⁴His ^(G)spirit departs, he ^(H)returns to ^[e]the earth;
On that very day his ^(I)plans perish.
⁵^(J)Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,

A Father’s Instruction

4 Listen, my sons, to the ^(A)instruction of a father,
And ^(B)pay attention so that you may ^[a]gain understanding,
²For I give you good ^(C)teaching;
^(D)Do not abandon my ^[b]instruction.
³When I was a son to my father,
^(E)Tender and ^(F)the only son in the sight of my mother,
⁴He ^(G)taught me and said to me,
“Let your heart ^(H)take hold of my words;
^(I)Keep my commandments and live;
⁵^(J)Acquire wisdom! ^(K)Acquire understanding!
Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
⁶Do not abandon her, and she will guard you;
^(L)Love her, and she will watch over you.
⁷^(M)The ^[c]beginning of wisdom is: ^(N)Acquire wisdom;
And with all your possessions, acquire understanding.
⁸^(O)Prize her, and she will exalt you;
She will honor you if you embrace her.

¹⁰Listen, my son, and ^(Q)accept my sayings,
And the ^(R)years of your life will be many.
¹¹I have ^(S)instructed you in the way of wisdom;
I have led you in upright paths.
¹²When you walk, your ^(T)steps will not be hampered;
And if you run, you ^(U)will not stumble.
¹³^(V)Take hold of instruction; do not let go.
Guard her, for she is your ^(W)life.
¹⁴^(X)Do not enter the path of the wicked
And do not proceed in the way of evil people.
¹⁵Avoid it, do not pass by it;
Turn away from it and pass on.
¹⁶For they ^(Y)cannot sleep unless they do evil;
And ^[d]they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone stumble.
¹⁷For they ^(Z)eat the bread of wickedness,
And drink the wine of violence.
¹⁸But the ^(AA)path of the righteous is like the ^(AB)light of dawn
That ^(AC)shines brighter and brighter until the ^(AD)full day.
¹⁹The ^(AE)way of the wicked is like darkness;
They do not know over what they ^[e]^(AF)stumble.

²⁰My son, ^(AG)pay attention to my words;
^(AH)Incline your ear to my sayings.
²¹^(AI)They are not to escape from your sight;
^(AJ)Keep them in the midst of your heart.

²³Watch over your heart with all diligence,

God Is Love

⁷^(A)Beloved, let’s ^(B)love one another; for love is from God, and ^(C)everyone who loves has been ^(D)born of God and ^(E)knows God. ⁸The one who does not love does not know God, because ^(F)God is love. ⁹By this the love of God was revealed ^[a]^(G)in us, that ^(H)God has sent His only Son into the world so that we may live through Him. ¹⁰In this is love, ^(I)not that we loved God, but that ^(J)He loved us and sent His Son to be ^(K)the ^[b]propitiation for our sins. ¹¹^(L)Beloved, if God so loved us, ^(M)we also ought to love one another. ¹²^(N)No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God remains in us, and His ^(O)love is perfected in us. ¹³^(P)By this we know that we remain in Him and He in us, because He has given to us of His Spirit. ¹⁴We have seen and ^(Q)testify that the Father has ^(R)sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

¹⁵^(S)Whoever confesses that ^(T)Jesus is the Son of God, God ^(U)remains in him, and he in God. ¹⁶^(V)We have come to know and have believed the love which God has ^[c]^(W)for us. ^(X)God is love, and the one who ^(Y)remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. ¹⁷By this, ^(Z)love is perfected with us, so that we may have ^(AA)confidence in ^(AB)the day of judgment; because ^(AC)as He is, we also are in this world. ¹⁸There is no fear in love, but ^(AD)perfect love drives out fear, because fear ^[d]involves punishment, and the one who fears is not ^(AE)perfected in love. ¹⁹^(AF)We love, because He first loved us. ²⁰^(AG)If someone says, “I love God,” and yet he ^(AH)hates his brother or sister, he is a ^(AI)liar; for ^(AJ)the one who does not love his brother and sister whom he has seen, ^(AK)cannot love God, whom he has not seen. ²¹And ^(AL)this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God ^(AM)must also love his brother and sister.

Jesus’ Tribute to John

⁷As these disciples of John were going away, Jesus began speaking to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into ^(A)the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸^[a]But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ ^[b]palaces! ⁹^[c]But what did you go out to see? ^(B)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. ¹⁰This is the one about whom it ^[d]is written:

‘^(C)Behold, I am sending My messenger ^[e]ahead of You,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’

¹¹Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹²And ^(D)from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has been treated violently, and violent men take it by force. ¹³For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. ¹⁴And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is ^(E)Elijah who ^[f]was to come. ¹⁵^(F)The one who has ears to hear, ^[g]let him hear.
