Psalm 33

Psalm 33

¹Sing joyfully^(A) to the Lord, you righteous;
    it is fitting^(B) for the upright^(C) to praise him.
²Praise the Lord with the harp;^(D)
    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.^(E)
³Sing to him a new song;^(F)
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.^(G)

⁴For the word of the Lord is right^(H) and true;^(I)
he is faithful^(J) in all he does.
⁵The Lord loves righteousness and justice;^(K)
the earth is full of his unfailing love.^(L)

⁶By the word^(M) of the Lord the heavens were made,^(N)
    their starry host^(O) by the breath of his mouth.
⁷He gathers the waters^(P) of the sea into jars^[a];^(Q)
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
⁸Let all the earth fear the Lord;^(R)
    let all the people of the world^(S) revere him.^(T)
⁹For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,^(U) and it stood firm.

¹⁰The Lord foils^(V) the plans^(W) of the nations;^(X)
he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
¹¹But the plans of the Lord stand firm^(Y) forever,
the purposes^(Z) of his heart through all generations.

¹²Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,^(AA)
    the people he chose^(AB) for his inheritance.^(AC)
¹³From heaven the Lord looks down^(AD)
    and sees all mankind;^(AE)
¹⁴from his dwelling place^(AF) he watches
    all who live on earth—
¹⁵he who forms^(AG) the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.^(AH)

¹⁶No king is saved by the size of his army;^(AI)
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
¹⁷A horse^(AJ) is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
¹⁸But the eyes^(AK) of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,^(AL)
¹⁹to deliver them from death^(AM)
    and keep them alive in famine.^(AN)

²⁰We wait^(AO) in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
²¹In him our hearts rejoice,^(AP)
    for we trust in his holy name.^(AQ)
²²May your unfailing love^(AR) be with us, Lord,
    even as we put our hope in you.

¹I have a message from God in my heart
concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:^[b]^(A)
There is no fear^(B) of God
before their eyes.^(C)

²In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.^(D)
³The words of their mouths^(E) are wicked and deceitful;^(F)
    they fail to act wisely^(G) or do good.^(H)
⁴Even on their beds they plot evil;^(I)
    they commit themselves to a sinful course^(J)
    and do not reject what is wrong.^(K)

⁵Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness^(L) to the skies.^(M)
⁶Your righteousness^(N) is like the highest mountains,^(O)
    your justice like the great deep.^(P)
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.^(Q)
⁷How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!^(R)
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.^(S)
⁸They feast on the abundance of your house;^(T)
    you give them drink from your river^(U) of delights.^(V)
⁹For with you is the fountain of life;^(W)
    in your light^(X) we see light.

¹⁰Continue your love^(Y) to those who know you,^(Z)
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.^(AA)
¹¹May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked^(AB) drive me away.
¹²See how the evildoers lie fallen—
    thrown down, not able to rise!^(AC)

Judges 2:6-23

Disobedience and Defeat^(A)

⁶After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. ⁷The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.^(B)

⁸Joshua son of Nun,^(C) the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. ⁹And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres^[a]^(D) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

¹⁰After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.^(E) ¹¹Then the Israelites did evil^(F) in the eyes of the Lord^(G) and served the Baals.^(H) ¹²They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods^(I) of the peoples around them.^(J) They aroused^(K) the Lord’s anger^(L) ¹³because they forsook^(M) him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.^(N) ¹⁴In his anger^(O) against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands^(P) of raiders who plundered^(Q) them. He sold them^(R) into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.^(S) ¹⁵Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them^(T) to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.^(U)

¹⁶Then the Lord raised up judges,^[b]^(V) who saved^(W) them out of the hands of these raiders. ¹⁷Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted^(X) themselves to other gods^(Y) and worshiped them.^(Z) They quickly turned^(AA) from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands.^(AB) ¹⁸Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved^(AC) them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented^(AD) because of their groaning^(AE) under those who oppressed and afflicted^(AF) them. ¹⁹But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt^(AG) than those of their ancestors,^(AH) following other gods and serving and worshiping them.^(AI) They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn^(AJ) ways.

²⁰Therefore the Lord was very angry^(AK) with Israel and said, “Because this nation has violated the covenant^(AL) I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, ²¹I will no longer drive out^(AM) before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. ²²I will use them to test^(AN) Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their ancestors did.” ²³The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.^(AO)

¹⁷The seventy-two^(A) returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”^(B)

¹⁸He replied, “I saw Satan^(C) fall like lightning from heaven.^(D) ¹⁹I have given you authority to trample on snakes^(E) and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. ²⁰However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”^(F)

²¹At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.^(G) Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

²²“All things have been committed to me by my Father.^(H) No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”^(I)

²³Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. ²⁴For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”^(J)
