Psalm 22:26-37:29

New International Version

²⁶ The poor will eat^(A) and be satisfied;
    those who seek the Lord will praise him—^(B)
    may your hearts live forever!

²⁷ All the ends of the earth^(C)
    will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    will bow down before him,^(D)
28 for dominion belongs to the Lord^(E)
    and he rules over the nations.

²⁹ All the rich^(F) of the earth will feast and worship;^(G)
    all who go down to the dust^(H) will kneel before him—
    those who cannot keep themselves alive.^(I)
30 Posterity^(J) will serve him;
    future generations^(K) will be told about the Lord.
³¹ They will proclaim his righteousness,^(L)
    declaring to a people yet unborn:^(M)
    He has done it!^(N)

⁵ You prepare a table^(Y) before me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;^(Z)
    my cup^(AA) overflows.
⁶ Surely your goodness and love^(AB) will follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

³ Who may ascend the mountain^(AF) of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?^(AG)
4 The one who has clean hands^(AH) and a pure heart,^(AI)
    who does not trust in an idol^(AJ)
    or swear by a false god.^[b]

⁵ They will receive blessing^(AK) from the Lord
    and vindication^(AL) from God their Savior.
⁶ Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek your face,^(AM) God of Jacob.^[c][d]

⁷ Lift up your heads, you gates;^(AN)
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King^(AO) of glory^(AP) may come in.^(AQ)
8 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,^(AR)
    the Lord mighty in battle.^(AS)
9 Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
¹⁰ Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty^(AT)—
    he is the King of glory.

² I trust in you;^(AV)
    do not let me be put to shame,
    nor let my enemies triumph over me.
³ No one who hopes in you
    will ever be put to shame,^(AW)
but shame will come on those
    who are treacherous^(AX) without cause.

⁴ Show me your ways, Lord,
    teach me your paths.^(AY)
5 Guide me in your truth^(AZ) and teach me,
    for you are God my Savior,^(BA)
    and my hope is in you^(BB) all day long.
⁶ Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,^(BC)
    for they are from of old.
⁷ Do not remember the sins of my youth^(BD)
    and my rebellious ways;^(BE)
according to your love^(BF) remember me,
    for you, Lord, are good.^(BG)

⁸ Good and upright^(BH) is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs^(BI) sinners in his ways.
⁹ He guides^(BJ) the humble in what is right
    and teaches them^(BK) his way.
¹⁰ All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful^(BL)
    toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.^(BM)
11 For the sake of your name,^(BN) Lord,
    forgive^(BO) my iniquity,^(BP) though it is great.

¹² Who, then, are those who fear the Lord?^(BQ)
    He will instruct them in the ways^(BR) they should choose.^[f]
13 They will spend their days in prosperity,^(BS)
    and their descendants will inherit the land.^(BT)
14 The Lord confides^(BU) in those who fear him;
    he makes his covenant known^(BV) to them.
¹⁵ My eyes are ever on the Lord,^(BW)
    for only he will release my feet from the snare.^(BX)

¹⁶ Turn to me^(BY) and be gracious to me,^(BZ)
    for I am lonely^(CA) and afflicted.
¹⁷ Relieve the troubles^(CB) of my heart
    and free me from my anguish.^(CC)
18 Look on my affliction^(CD) and my distress^(CE)
    and take away all my sins.^(CF)
19 See how numerous are my enemies^(CG)
    and how fiercely they hate me!^(CH)

²⁰ Guard my life^(CI) and rescue me;^(CJ)
    do not let me be put to shame,^(CK)
    for I take refuge^(CL) in you.
²¹ May integrity^(CM) and uprightness^(CN) protect me,
    because my hope, Lord,^[g] is in you.^(CO)

²² Deliver Israel,^(CP) O God,
    from all their troubles!

⁴ I do not sit^(CZ) with the deceitful,
    nor do I associate with hypocrites.^(DA)
5 I abhor^(DB) the assembly of evildoers
    and refuse to sit with the wicked.
⁶ I wash my hands in innocence,^(DC)
    and go about your altar, Lord,
⁷ proclaiming aloud your praise^(DD)
    and telling of all your wonderful deeds.^(DE)

⁸ Lord, I love^(DF) the house where you live,
    the place where your glory dwells.^(DG)
9 Do not take away my soul along with sinners,
    my life with those who are bloodthirsty,^(DH)
10 in whose hands are wicked schemes,^(DI)
    whose right hands are full of bribes.^(DJ)
11 I lead a blameless life;
    deliver me^(DK) and be merciful to me.

¹² My feet stand on level ground;^(DL)
    in the great congregation^(DM) I will praise the Lord.

² When the wicked advance against me
    to devour^[h] me,
it is my enemies and my foes
    who will stumble and fall.^(DR)
3 Though an army besiege me,
    my heart will not fear;^(DS)
though war break out against me,
    even then I will be confident.^(DT)

⁴ One thing^(DU) I ask from the Lord,
    this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,^(DV)
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
    and to seek him in his temple.
⁵ For in the day of trouble^(DW)
    he will keep me safe^(DX) in his dwelling;
he will hide me^(DY) in the shelter of his sacred tent
    and set me high upon a rock.^(DZ)

⁶ Then my head will be exalted^(EA)
    above the enemies who surround me;^(EB)
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice^(EC) with shouts of joy;^(ED)
    I will sing^(EE) and make music^(EF) to the Lord.

⁷ Hear my voice^(EG) when I call, Lord;
    be merciful to me and answer me.^(EH)
8 My heart says of you, “Seek his face!^(EI)”
    Your face, Lord, I will seek.
⁹ Do not hide your face^(EJ) from me,
    do not turn your servant away in anger;^(EK)
    you have been my helper.^(EL)
Do not reject me or forsake^(EM) me,
    God my Savior.^(EN)
10 Though my father and mother forsake me,
    the Lord will receive me.
¹¹ Teach me your way,^(EO) Lord;
    lead me in a straight path^(EP)
    because of my oppressors.^(EQ)
12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
    for false witnesses^(ER) rise up against me,
    spouting malicious accusations.

¹³ I remain confident of this:
    I will see the goodness of the Lord^(ES)
    in the land of the living.^(ET)
14 Wait^(EU) for the Lord;
    be strong^(EV) and take heart
    and wait for the Lord.

³ Do not drag me away with the wicked,
    with those who do evil,
who speak cordially with their neighbors
    but harbor malice in their hearts.^(FC)
4 Repay them for their deeds
    and for their evil work;
repay them for what their hands have done^(FD)
    and bring back on them what they deserve.^(FE)

⁵ Because they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord
    and what his hands have done,^(FF)
he will tear them down
    and never build them up again.

⁶ Praise be to the Lord,^(FG)
    for he has heard my cry for mercy.^(FH)
7 The Lord is my strength^(FI) and my shield;
    my heart trusts^(FJ) in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,^(FK)
    and with my song I praise him.^(FL)

⁸ The Lord is the strength^(FM) of his people,
    a fortress of salvation^(FN) for his anointed one.^(FO)
9 Save your people^(FP) and bless your inheritance;^(FQ)
    be their shepherd^(FR) and carry them^(FS) forever.

³ The voice^(FX) of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory^(FY) thunders,^(FZ)
    the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.^(GA)
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;^(GB)
    the voice of the Lord is majestic.
⁵ The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.^(GC)
6 He makes Lebanon leap^(GD) like a calf,
    Sirion^[j](GE) like a young wild ox.^(GF)
7 The voice of the Lord strikes
    with flashes of lightning.^(GG)
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.^(GH)
9 The voice of the Lord twists the oaks^[k](GI)
    and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”^(GJ)

¹⁰ The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;^(GK)
    the Lord is enthroned as King forever.^(GL)
11 The Lord gives strength to his people;^(GM)
    the Lord blesses his people with peace.^(GN)

⁴ Sing^(GV) the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;^(GW)
    praise his holy name.^(GX)
5 For his anger^(GY) lasts only a moment,^(GZ)
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;^(HA)
weeping^(HB) may stay for the night,
    but rejoicing comes in the morning.^(HC)

⁶ When I felt secure, I said,
    “I will never be shaken.”^(HD)
7 Lord, when you favored me,
    you made my royal mountain^[n] stand firm;
but when you hid your face,^(HE)
    I was dismayed.

⁸ To you, Lord, I called;
    to the Lord I cried for mercy:
⁹ “What is gained if I am silenced,
    if I go down to the pit?^(HF)
Will the dust praise you?
    Will it proclaim your faithfulness?^(HG)
10 Hear,^(HH) Lord, and be merciful to me;^(HI)
    Lord, be my help.^(HJ)”

¹¹ You turned my wailing^(HK) into dancing;^(HL)
    you removed my sackcloth^(HM) and clothed me with joy,^(HN)
12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
    Lord my God, I will praise^(HO) you forever.^(HP)

⁶ I hate those who cling to worthless idols;^(IC)
    as for me, I trust in the Lord.^(ID)
7 I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
    for you saw my affliction^(IE)
    and knew the anguish^(IF) of my soul.
⁸ You have not given me into the hands^(IG) of the enemy
    but have set my feet in a spacious place.^(IH)

⁹ Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;^(II)
    my eyes grow weak with sorrow,^(IJ)
    my soul and body^(IK) with grief.
¹⁰ My life is consumed by anguish^(IL)
    and my years by groaning;^(IM)
my strength fails^(IN) because of my affliction,^[p](IO)
    and my bones grow weak.^(IP)
11 Because of all my enemies,^(IQ)
    I am the utter contempt^(IR) of my neighbors^(IS)
and an object of dread to my closest friends—
    those who see me on the street flee from me.
¹² I am forgotten as though I were dead;^(IT)
    I have become like broken pottery.
¹³ For I hear many whispering,^(IU)
    “Terror on every side!”^(IV)
They conspire against me^(IW)
    and plot to take my life.^(IX)

¹⁴ But I trust^(IY) in you, Lord;
    I say, “You are my God.”
¹⁵ My times^(IZ) are in your hands;
    deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
    from those who pursue me.
¹⁶ Let your face shine^(JA) on your servant;
    save me in your unfailing love.^(JB)
17 Let me not be put to shame,^(JC) Lord,
    for I have cried out to you;
but let the wicked be put to shame
    and be silent^(JD) in the realm of the dead.
¹⁸ Let their lying lips^(JE) be silenced,
    for with pride and contempt
    they speak arrogantly^(JF) against the righteous.

¹⁹ How abundant are the good things^(JG)
    that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,^(JH)
    on those who take refuge^(JI) in you.
²⁰ In the shelter^(JJ) of your presence you hide^(JK) them
    from all human intrigues;^(JL)
you keep them safe in your dwelling
    from accusing tongues.

²¹ Praise be to the Lord,^(JM)
    for he showed me the wonders of his love^(JN)
    when I was in a city under siege.^(JO)
22 In my alarm^(JP) I said,
    “I am cut off^(JQ) from your sight!”
Yet you heard my cry^(JR) for mercy
    when I called to you for help.

²³ Love the Lord, all his faithful people!^(JS)
    The Lord preserves those who are true to him,^(JT)
    but the proud he pays back^(JU) in full.
²⁴ Be strong and take heart,^(JV)
    all you who hope in the Lord.

³ When I kept silent,^(JZ)
    my bones wasted away^(KA)
    through my groaning^(KB) all day long.
⁴ For day and night
    your hand was heavy^(KC) on me;
my strength was sapped^(KD)
    as in the heat of summer.^[r]

⁵ Then I acknowledged my sin to you
    and did not cover up my iniquity.^(KE)
I said, “I will confess^(KF)
    my transgressions^(KG) to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.^(KH)

⁶ Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;^(KI)
surely the rising^(KJ) of the mighty waters^(KK)
    will not reach them.^(KL)
7 You are my hiding place;^(KM)
    you will protect me from trouble^(KN)
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.^(KO)

⁸ I will instruct^(KP) you and teach you^(KQ) in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on^(KR) you.
⁹ Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle^(KS)
    or they will not come to you.
¹⁰ Many are the woes of the wicked,^(KT)
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts^(KU) in him.

¹¹ Rejoice in the Lord^(KV) and be glad, you righteous;
    sing, all you who are upright in heart!

⁴ For the word of the Lord is right^(LD) and true;^(LE)
    he is faithful^(LF) in all he does.
⁵ The Lord loves righteousness and justice;^(LG)
    the earth is full of his unfailing love.^(LH)

⁶ By the word^(LI) of the Lord the heavens were made,^(LJ)
    their starry host^(LK) by the breath of his mouth.
⁷ He gathers the waters^(LL) of the sea into jars^[s];^(LM)
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
⁸ Let all the earth fear the Lord;^(LN)
    let all the people of the world^(LO) revere him.^(LP)
9 For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,^(LQ) and it stood firm.

¹⁰ The Lord foils^(LR) the plans^(LS) of the nations;^(LT)
    he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
¹¹ But the plans of the Lord stand firm^(LU) forever,
    the purposes^(LV) of his heart through all generations.

¹² Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,^(LW)
    the people he chose^(LX) for his inheritance.^(LY)
13 From heaven the Lord looks down^(LZ)
    and sees all mankind;^(MA)
14 from his dwelling place^(MB) he watches
    all who live on earth—
¹⁵ he who forms^(MC) the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.^(MD)

¹⁶ No king is saved by the size of his army;^(ME)
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
¹⁷ A horse^(MF) is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
¹⁸ But the eyes^(MG) of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,^(MH)
19 to deliver them from death^(MI)
    and keep them alive in famine.^(MJ)

²⁰ We wait^(MK) in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
²¹ In him our hearts rejoice,^(ML)
    for we trust in his holy name.^(MM)
22 May your unfailing love^(MN) be with us, Lord,
    even as we put our hope in you.

⁴ I sought the Lord,^(MU) and he answered me;
    he delivered^(MV) me from all my fears.
⁵ Those who look to him are radiant;^(MW)
    their faces are never covered with shame.^(MX)
6 This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.^(MY)
7 The angel of the Lord^(MZ) encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers^(NA) them.

⁸ Taste and see that the Lord is good;^(NB)
    blessed is the one who takes refuge^(NC) in him.
⁹ Fear the Lord,^(ND) you his holy people,
    for those who fear him lack nothing.^(NE)
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.^(NF)
11 Come, my children, listen^(NG) to me;
    I will teach you^(NH) the fear of the Lord.^(NI)
12 Whoever of you loves life^(NJ)
    and desires to see many good days,
¹³ keep your tongue^(NK) from evil
    and your lips from telling lies.^(NL)
14 Turn from evil and do good;^(NM)
    seek peace^(NN) and pursue it.

¹⁵ The eyes of the Lord^(NO) are on the righteous,^(NP)
    and his ears are attentive^(NQ) to their cry;
¹⁶ but the face of the Lord is against^(NR) those who do evil,^(NS)
    to blot out their name^(NT) from the earth.

¹⁷ The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears^(NU) them;
    he delivers them from all their troubles.
¹⁸ The Lord is close^(NV) to the brokenhearted^(NW)
    and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

¹⁹ The righteous person may have many troubles,^(NX)
    but the Lord delivers him from them all;^(NY)
20 he protects all his bones,
    not one of them will be broken.^(NZ)

²¹ Evil will slay the wicked;^(OA)
    the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
²² The Lord will rescue^(OB) his servants;
    no one who takes refuge^(OC) in him will be condemned.

⁴ May those who seek my life^(OL)
    be disgraced^(OM) and put to shame;^(ON)
may those who plot my ruin
    be turned back^(OO) in dismay.
⁵ May they be like chaff^(OP) before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord^(OQ) driving them away;
⁶ may their path be dark and slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

⁷ Since they hid their net^(OR) for me without cause^(OS)
    and without cause dug a pit^(OT) for me,
⁸ may ruin overtake them by surprise—^(OU)
    may the net they hid entangle them,
    may they fall into the pit,^(OV) to their ruin.
⁹ Then my soul will rejoice^(OW) in the Lord
    and delight in his salvation.^(OX)
10 My whole being will exclaim,
    “Who is like you,^(OY) Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong^(OZ) for them,
    the poor and needy^(PA) from those who rob them.”

¹¹ Ruthless witnesses^(PB) come forward;
    they question me on things I know nothing about.
¹² They repay me evil for good^(PC)
    and leave me like one bereaved.
¹³ Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth^(PD)
    and humbled myself with fasting.^(PE)
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
¹⁴     I went about mourning^(PF)
    as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
    as though weeping for my mother.
¹⁵ But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;^(PG)
    assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
    They slandered^(PH) me without ceasing.
¹⁶ Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;^[w](PI)
    they gnashed their teeth^(PJ) at me.

¹⁷ How long,^(PK) Lord, will you look on?
    Rescue me from their ravages,
    my precious life^(PL) from these lions.^(PM)
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;^(PN)
    among the throngs^(PO) I will praise you.^(PP)
19 Do not let those gloat over me
    who are my enemies^(PQ) without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason^(PR)
    maliciously wink the eye.^(PS)
20 They do not speak peaceably,
    but devise false accusations^(PT)
    against those who live quietly in the land.
²¹ They sneer^(PU) at me and say, “Aha! Aha!^(PV)
    With our own eyes we have seen it.”

²² Lord, you have seen^(PW) this; do not be silent.
    Do not be far^(PX) from me, Lord.
²³ Awake,^(PY) and rise^(PZ) to my defense!
    Contend^(QA) for me, my God and Lord.
²⁴ Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
    do not let them gloat^(QB) over me.
²⁵ Do not let them think, “Aha,^(QC) just what we wanted!”
    or say, “We have swallowed him up.”^(QD)

²⁶ May all who gloat^(QE) over my distress^(QF)
    be put to shame^(QG) and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me^(QH)
    be clothed with shame and disgrace.
²⁷ May those who delight in my vindication^(QI)
    shout for joy^(QJ) and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
    who delights^(QK) in the well-being of his servant.”^(QL)

²⁸ My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,^(QM)
    your praises all day long.^(QN)

² In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.^(QR)
3 The words of their mouths^(QS) are wicked and deceitful;^(QT)
    they fail to act wisely^(QU) or do good.^(QV)
4 Even on their beds they plot evil;^(QW)
    they commit themselves to a sinful course^(QX)
    and do not reject what is wrong.^(QY)

⁵ Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness^(QZ) to the skies.^(RA)
6 Your righteousness^(RB) is like the highest mountains,^(RC)
    your justice like the great deep.^(RD)
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.^(RE)
7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!^(RF)
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.^(RG)
8 They feast on the abundance of your house;^(RH)
    you give them drink from your river^(RI) of delights.^(RJ)
9 For with you is the fountain of life;^(RK)
    in your light^(RL) we see light.

¹⁰ Continue your love^(RM) to those who know you,^(RN)
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.^(RO)
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked^(RP) drive me away.
¹² See how the evildoers lie fallen—
    thrown down, not able to rise!^(RQ)

³ Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land^(RV) and enjoy safe pasture.^(RW)
4 Take delight^(RX) in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.^(RY)

⁵ Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him^(RZ) and he will do this:
⁶ He will make your righteous reward^(SA) shine like the dawn,^(SB)
    your vindication like the noonday sun.

⁷ Be still^(SC) before the Lord
    and wait patiently^(SD) for him;
do not fret^(SE) when people succeed in their ways,^(SF)
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.^(SG)

⁸ Refrain from anger^(SH) and turn from wrath;
    do not fret^(SI)—it leads only to evil.
⁹ For those who are evil will be destroyed,^(SJ)
    but those who hope^(SK) in the Lord will inherit the land.^(SL)

¹⁰ A little while, and the wicked will be no more;^(SM)
    though you look for them, they will not be found.
¹¹ But the meek will inherit the land^(SN)
    and enjoy peace and prosperity.^(SO)

¹² The wicked plot^(SP) against the righteous
    and gnash their teeth^(SQ) at them;
¹³ but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
    for he knows their day is coming.^(SR)

¹⁴ The wicked draw the sword^(SS)
    and bend the bow^(ST)
to bring down the poor and needy,^(SU)
    to slay those whose ways are upright.
¹⁵ But their swords will pierce their own hearts,^(SV)
    and their bows will be broken.^(SW)

¹⁶ Better the little that the righteous have
    than the wealth^(SX) of many wicked;
¹⁷ for the power of the wicked will be broken,^(SY)
    but the Lord upholds^(SZ) the righteous.

¹⁸ The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,^(TA)
    and their inheritance will endure forever.^(TB)
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
    in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

²⁰ But the wicked will perish:^(TC)
    Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
    they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.^(TD)

²¹ The wicked borrow and do not repay,
    but the righteous give generously;^(TE)
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,
    but those he curses^(TF) will be destroyed.^(TG)

²³ The Lord makes firm the steps^(TH)
    of the one who delights^(TI) in him;
²⁴ though he may stumble, he will not fall,^(TJ)
    for the Lord upholds^(TK) him with his hand.

²⁵ I was young and now I am old,
    yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken^(TL)
    or their children begging^(TM) bread.
²⁶ They are always generous and lend freely;^(TN)
    their children will be a blessing.^[aa](TO)

²⁷ Turn from evil and do good;^(TP)
    then you will dwell in the land forever.^(TQ)
28 For the Lord loves the just
    and will not forsake his faithful ones.^(TR)

Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed^[ab];
    the offspring of the wicked will perish.^(TS)
29 The righteous will inherit the land^(TT)
