7 [a]Remember, O Lord, the cruelty of the Edomites
on the day when Jerusalem fell,[b]
how they shouted, “Tear it down!
Tear it down to its very foundations!”

- Psalm 137:7 On the day when Jerusalem fell: literally, “the day of Jerusalem” or “that day at Jerusalem.” The “day” in question is either the ninth day of the fourth month (June–July 587 B.C.) when the Babylonians broke through the walls of Jerusalem (see Jer 39:2; 52:7) or the tenth day of the fifth month (July–August 587 B.C.) when the temple was set afire (see Jer 52:12; Zec 7:5; 8:19). The Edomites collaborated with the besiegers and did everything they could to disgrace Judah and keep the people from escaping (see Lam 4:21f; Ezek 25:12; 35:12; Ob 11), and their name became a symbol of Israel’s enemies, as well as an object of the Lord’s judgments (see Isa 63:1-4; Jer 49:7-22; Ezek 25:8, 12-14; 35; Ob 1-21).

12 Against Edom. Thus says the Lord God: Since Edom has acted with vengeance against the house of Judah and has committed a grievous offense in taking vengeance upon them, 13 the Lord God has made this decision: I will stretch forth my hand against Edom and remove from it both people and animals. I will lay it waste from Teman as far as Dedan, and they will all fall by the sword. 14 I will wreak my vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will treat Edom according to my anger and my fury. Thus they will know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

3 Say to it: Thus says the Lord God:
Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir
I will stretch out my hand against you
and reduce you to a desolate waste.
4 I will lay your towns in ruins,
and you will become a wasteland.
Then you will know that I am the Lord.
5 Because you refused to cease an ancient feud,
you handed over the people of Israel
to the power of the sword
on the day of their distress,
the hour of their final punishment.
6 Therefore, as I live, says the Lord God,
blood shall be your destiny,
and it will pursue you.
Since by shedding blood you incurred guilt,
bloodshed will pursue you.
7 I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste
and prevent anyone from going there or departing.
8 I will fill its mountains with the slain;
those slain by the sword will fall
on your hills and in your valleys and ravines.
9 I will make you desolate forever,
and your towns will never again be inhabited.
Thus, you shall know that I am the Lord.
10 Because you said, “These two nations and the two lands will be mine, and we will take possession of them,” even though I, the Lord, was there,

3 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand(A) against you and make you a desolate waste.(B) 4 I will turn your towns into ruins(C) and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(D)
5 “‘Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword(E) at the time of their calamity,(F) the time their punishment reached its climax,(G) 6 therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed(H) and it will pursue you.(I) Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you. 7 I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste(J) and cut off from it all who come and go.(K) 8 I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines.(L) 9 I will make you desolate forever;(M) your towns will not be inhabited.
