117 Praise (A)the Lord, all you Gentiles!
[a]Laud Him, all you peoples!
For His merciful kindness is great toward us,
And (B)the truth of the Lord endures forever.

Praise the Lord!

  1. Psalm 117:1 Praise

כ KAPH

81 (A)My soul faints for Your salvation,
But I hope in Your word.
82 My eyes fail from searching Your word,
Saying, “When will You comfort me?”
83 For (B)I have become like a wineskin in smoke,
Yet I do not forget Your statutes.
84 (C)How many are the days of Your servant?
(D)When will You execute judgment on those who persecute me?
85 (E)The proud have dug pits for me,
Which is not according to Your law.
86 All Your commandments are faithful;
They persecute me (F)wrongfully;
Help me!
87 They almost made an end of me on earth,
But I did not forsake Your precepts.
88 Revive me according to Your lovingkindness,
So that I may keep the testimony of Your mouth.

ל LAMED

89 (G)Forever, O Lord,
Your word [a]is settled in heaven.
90 Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
You established the earth, and it [b]abides.
91 They continue this day according to (H)Your ordinances,
For all are Your servants.
92 Unless Your law had been my delight,
I would then have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget Your precepts,
For by them You have given me life.
94 I am Yours, save me;
For I have sought Your precepts.
95 The wicked wait for me to destroy me,
But I will [c]consider Your testimonies.
96 (I)I have seen the consummation of all perfection,
But Your commandment is exceedingly broad.

מ MEM

97 Oh, how I love Your law!
(J)It is my meditation all the day.
98 You, through Your commandments, make me (K)wiser than my enemies;
For they are ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,
(L)For Your testimonies are my meditation.
100 (M)I understand more than the [d]ancients,
Because I keep Your precepts.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not departed from Your judgments,
For You Yourself have taught me.
103 (N)How sweet are Your words to my taste,
Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through Your precepts I get understanding;
Therefore I hate every false way.

נ NUN

105 (O)Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.
106 (P)I have sworn and confirmed
That I will keep Your righteous judgments.
107 I am afflicted very much;
Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.
108 Accept, I pray, (Q)the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord,
And teach me Your judgments.
109 (R)My life is continually [e]in my hand,
Yet I do not forget Your law.
110 (S)The wicked have laid a snare for me,
Yet I have not strayed from Your precepts.
111 (T)Your testimonies I have taken as a [f]heritage forever,
For they are the rejoicing of my heart.
112 I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes
Forever, to the very end.

ס SAMEK

113 I hate the [g]double-minded,
But I love Your law.
114 (U)You are my hiding place and my shield;
I hope in Your word.
115 (V)Depart from me, you evildoers,
For I will keep the commandments of my God!
116 Uphold me according to Your word, that I may live;
And do not let me (W)be ashamed of my hope.
117 [h]Hold me up, and I shall be safe,
And I shall observe Your statutes continually.
118 You reject all those who stray from Your statutes,
For their deceit is falsehood.
119 You [i]put away all the wicked of the earth (X)like [j]dross;
Therefore I love Your testimonies.
120 (Y)My flesh trembles for fear of You,
And I am afraid of Your judgments.

ע AYIN

121 I have done justice and righteousness;
Do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Be (Z)surety[k] for Your servant for good;
Do not let the proud oppress me.
123 My eyes fail from seeking Your salvation
And Your righteous word.
124 Deal with Your servant according to Your mercy,
And teach me Your statutes.
125 (AA)I am Your servant;
Give me understanding,
That I may know Your testimonies.
126 It is time for You to act, O Lord,
For they have [l]regarded Your law as void.
127 (AB)Therefore I love Your commandments
More than gold, yes, than fine gold!
128 Therefore all Your precepts concerning all things
I consider to be right;
I hate every false way.

פ PE

129 Your testimonies are wonderful;
Therefore my soul keeps them.
130 The entrance of Your words gives light;
(AC)It gives understanding to the (AD)simple.
131 I opened my mouth and (AE)panted,
For I longed for Your commandments.
132 (AF)Look upon me and be merciful to me,
(AG)As Your custom is toward those who love Your name.
133 (AH)Direct my steps by Your word,
And (AI)let no iniquity have dominion over me.
134 (AJ)Redeem me from the oppression of man,
That I may keep Your precepts.
135 (AK)Make Your face shine upon Your servant,
And teach me Your statutes.
136 (AL)Rivers of water run down from my eyes,
Because men do not keep Your law.

צ TSADDE

137 (AM)Righteous are You, O Lord,
And upright are Your judgments.
138 (AN)Your testimonies, which You have commanded,
Are righteous and very faithful.
139 (AO)My zeal has [m]consumed me,
Because my enemies have forgotten Your words.
140 (AP)Your word is very [n]pure;
Therefore Your servant loves it.
141 I am small and despised,
Yet I do not forget Your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
And Your law is (AQ)truth.
143 Trouble and anguish have [o]overtaken me,
Yet Your commandments are my delights.
144 The righteousness of Your testimonies is everlasting;
Give me understanding, and I shall live.

Hear me, O Lord!
I will keep Your statutes.

Save me, and I will keep Your testimonies.
147 (AR)I rise before the dawning of the morning,
And cry for help;
I hope in Your word.
148 (AS)My eyes are awake through the night watches,
That I may meditate on Your word.
149 Hear my voice according to Your lovingkindness;
O Lord, revive me according to Your justice.
150 They draw near who follow after wickedness;
They are far from Your law.
151 You are (AT)near, O Lord,
And all Your commandments are truth.
152 Concerning Your testimonies,
I have known of old that You have founded them (AU)forever.

For they do not seek Your statutes.

Revive me according to Your judgments.
157 Many are my persecutors and my enemies,
Yet I do not (AX)turn from Your testimonies.
158 I see the treacherous, and (AY)am disgusted,
Because they do not keep Your word.

Revive me, O Lord, according to Your lovingkindness.
160 The entirety of Your word is truth,
And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

(BC)For all my ways are before You.

For all Your commandments are righteousness.

For (BF)I have chosen Your precepts.
174 (BG)I long for Your salvation, O Lord,
And (BH)Your law is my delight.
175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise You;
And let Your judgments help me.
176 (BI)I have gone astray like a lost sheep;
Seek Your servant,
For I do not forget Your commandments.

The True Vine

15 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. (A)Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He [a]takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear (B)more fruit. (C)You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. (D)Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much (E)fruit; for without Me you can do (F)nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, (G)he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words (H)abide in you, (I)you[b] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. (J)By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; (K)so you will be My disciples.

Love and Joy Perfected

“As the Father (L)loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 (M)If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and (N)that your joy may be full. 12 (O)This is My (P)commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (Q)Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 (R)You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, (S)for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (T)You did not choose Me, but I chose you and (U)appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father (V)in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.

The World’s Hatred

18 (W)“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 (X)If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet (Y)because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, (Z)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. (AA)If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But (AB)all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 (AC)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, (AD)but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (AE)He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them (AF)the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have (AG)seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, (AH)‘They hated Me without a cause.’

The Coming Rejection

26 (AI)“But when the [c]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, (AJ)He will testify of Me. 27 And (AK)you also will bear witness, because (AL)you have been with Me from the beginning.

Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples

16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you (AM)should not be made to stumble. (AN)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming (AO)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And (AP)these things they will do [d]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when [e]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I (AQ)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (AR)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (AS)if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has (AT)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (AU)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 (AV)of righteousness, (AW)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 (AX)of judgment, because (AY)the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, (AZ)but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, (BA)the Spirit of truth, has come, (BB)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 (BC)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 (BD)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [f]will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

16 “A (BE)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (BF)because I go to the Father.”

17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [g]know what He is saying.”

19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (BG)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (BH)joy. 21 (BI)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (BJ)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (BK)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (BL)that your joy may be (BM)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (BN)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (BO)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (BP)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (BQ)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (BR)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (BS)we believe that You came forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (BT)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (BU)each to his [h]own, and will leave Me alone. And (BV)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (BW)in Me you may have peace. (BX)In the world you [i]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (BY)I have overcome the world.”

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, (BZ)the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, (CA)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He [j]should give eternal life to as many (CB)as You have given Him. And (CC)this is eternal life, that they may know You, (CD)the only true God, and Jesus Christ (CE)whom You have sent. (CF)I have glorified You on the earth. (CG)I have finished the work (CH)which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together [k]with Yourself, with the glory (CI)which I had with You before the world was.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

(CJ)“I have [l]manifested Your name to the men (CK)whom You have given Me out of the world. (CL)They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words (CM)which You have given Me; and they have received them, (CN)and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that (CO)You sent Me.

“I pray for them. (CP)I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and (CQ)Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 (CR)Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, (CS)keep[m] through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one (CT)as We are. 12 While I was with them [n]in the world, (CU)I kept them in [o]Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and (CV)none of them is [p]lost (CW)except the son of [q]perdition, (CX)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; (CY)and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, (CZ)just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but (DA)that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (DB)Sanctify[r] them by Your truth. (DC)Your word is truth. 18 (DD)As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And (DE)for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who [s]will believe in Me through their word; 21 (DF)that they all may be one, as (DG)You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the (DH)glory which You gave Me I have given them, (DI)that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; (DJ)that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

24 (DK)“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; (DL)for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father! (DM)The world has not known You, but (DN)I have known You; and (DO)these have known that You sent Me. 26 (DP)And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love (DQ)with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(DR)

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (DS)He went out with His disciples over (DT)the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; (DU)for Jesus often met there with His disciples. (DV)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, (DW)knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”

They answered Him, (DX)“Jesus [t]of Nazareth.”

Jesus said to them, “I am He. And Judas, who (DY)betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, “I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground.

Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”

And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (DZ)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

10 (EA)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (EB)the cup which My Father has given Me?”

Before the High Priest

12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (EC)they led Him away to (ED)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (EE)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (EF)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [u]expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus(EG)

15 (EH)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (EI)another[v] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (EJ)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”

He said, “I am (EK)not.”

18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

Jesus Questioned by the High Priest

19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

20 Jesus answered him, (EL)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (EM)in synagogues and (EN)in the temple, where [w]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (EO)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”

22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (EP)struck[x] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”

23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”

24 (EQ)Then Annas sent Him bound to (ER)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter Denies Twice More

25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (ES)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”

He denied it and said, “I am not!”

26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (ET)immediately a rooster crowed.

In Pilate’s Court(EU)

28 (EV)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. (EW)But they themselves did not go into the [y]Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 (EX)Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”

30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not [z]an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.”

Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 (EY)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, (EZ)signifying by what death He would die.

33 (FA)Then Pilate entered the [aa]Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”

35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”

36 (FB)Jesus answered, (FC)“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”

37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”

Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, (FD)that I should bear (FE)witness to the truth. Everyone who (FF)is of the truth (FG)hears My voice.”

38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, (FH)“I find no fault in Him at all.

Taking the Place of Barabbas(FI)

39 (FJ)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

40 (FK)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (FL)Now Barabbas was a robber.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(FM)

19 So then (FN)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. [ab]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (FO)struck Him with their hands.

Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (FP)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”

Pilate’s Decision

Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”

(FQ)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!

Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”

The Jews answered him, (FR)“We have a law, and according to [ac]our law He ought to die, because (FS)He made Himself the Son of God.”

Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (FT)But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [ad]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”

11 Jesus answered, (FU)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (FV)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (FW)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

13 (FX)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (FY)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”

The chief priests answered, (FZ)“We have no king but Caesar!”

16 (GA)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [ae]and led Him away.

The King on a Cross(GB)

17 (GC)And He, bearing His cross, (GD)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (GE)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (GF)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 (GG)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

(GH)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

25 (GI)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (GJ)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (GK)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (GL)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (GM)to his own home.

It Is Finished

28 After this, Jesus, [af]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (GN)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (GO)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (GP)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 (GQ)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (GR)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (GS)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (GT)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (GU)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (GV)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (GW)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (GX)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(GY)

38 (GZ)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (HA)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (HB)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (HC)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (HD)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (HE)there they laid Jesus, (HF)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

The Empty Tomb(HG)

20 Now the (HH)first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the (HI)stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the (HJ)other disciple, (HK)whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

(HL)Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw (HM)the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and (HN)the [ag]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the (HO)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not [ah]know the (HP)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

11 (HQ)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 (HR)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and (HS)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, (HT)“Mary!”

She turned and said to [ai]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet (HU)ascended to My Father; but go to (HV)My brethren and say to them, (HW)‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to (HX)My God and your God.’ ”

18 (HY)Mary Magdalene came and told the [aj]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

The Apostles Commissioned(HZ)

19 (IA)Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were [ak]assembled, for (IB)fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, (IC)“Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He (ID)showed them His hands and His side. (IE)Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! (IF)As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (IG)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Seeing and Believing

24 Now Thomas, (IH)called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and (II)reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be (IJ)unbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, [al]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. (IK)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

That You May Believe

30 And (IL)truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (IM)but these are written that (IN)you may believe that Jesus (IO)is the Christ, the Son of God, (IP)and that believing you may have life in His name.

Breakfast by the Sea

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the (IQ)Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, (IR)Thomas called the Twin, (IS)Nathanael of (IT)Cana in Galilee, (IU)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [am]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (IV)did not know that it was Jesus. Then (IW)Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

And He said to them, (IX)“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

Therefore (IY)that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, (IZ)“Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

14 This is now (JA)the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [an]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [ao]love You.”

He said to him, (JB)“Feed My lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [ap]Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [aq]love You.”

(JC)He said to him, “Tend My (JD)sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [ar]Jonah, do you [as]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, (JE)You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 (JF)Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying (JG)by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, (JH)“Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple (JI)whom Jesus loved following, (JJ)who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I [at]will that he remain (JK)till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (JL)testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

25 (JM)And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, (JN)I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

What Was Heard, Seen, and Touched(A)

That (B)which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have (C)seen with our eyes, (D)which we have looked upon, and (E)our hands have handled, concerning the (F)Word of life— (G)the life (H)was manifested, and we have seen, (I)and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was (J)with the Father and was manifested to us— that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is (K)with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you (L)that [a]your joy may be full.

Fellowship with Him and One Another

(M)This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that (N)God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. (O)If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we (P)walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and (Q)the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we (R)confess our sins, He is (S)faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to (T)cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we (U)make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

The Test of Knowing Christ

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, (V)we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And (W)He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but (X)also for the whole world.

The Test of Knowing Him

Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a (Y)liar, and the truth is not in him. But (Z)whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God [b]is perfected (AA)in him. By this we know that we are in Him. (AB)He who says he abides in Him (AC)ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

[c]Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had (AD)from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard [d]from the beginning. Again, (AE)a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, (AF)because the darkness is passing away, and (AG)the true light is already shining.

(AH)He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 (AI)He who loves his brother abides in the light, and (AJ)there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who (AK)hates his brother is in darkness and (AL)walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Their Spiritual State

12 I write to you, little children,
Because (AM)your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.
13 I write to you, fathers,
Because you have known Him who is (AN)from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
Because you have overcome the wicked one.
I write to you, little children,
Because you have (AO)known the Father.
14 I have written to you, fathers,
Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.
I have written to you, young men,
Because (AP)you are strong, and the word of God abides in you,
And you have overcome the wicked one.

Do Not Love the World

15 (AQ)Do not love the world or the things in the world. (AR)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, (AS)the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And (AT)the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Deceptions of the Last Hour

18 (AU)Little children, (AV)it is the last hour; and as you have heard that (AW)the[e] Antichrist is coming, (AX)even now many antichrists have come, by which we know (AY)that it is the last hour. 19 (AZ)They went out from us, but they were not of us; for (BA)if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out (BB)that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

20 But (BC)you have an anointing (BD)from the Holy One, and (BE)you[f] know all things. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

22 (BF)Who is a liar but he who denies that (BG)Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. 23 (BH)Whoever denies the Son does not have the (BI)Father either; (BJ)he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

Let Truth Abide in You

24 Therefore let that abide in you (BK)which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, (BL)you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 (BM)And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who try to [g]deceive you. 27 But the (BN)anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and (BO)you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing (BP)teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you [h]will abide in Him.

The Children of God

28 And now, little children, abide in Him, that [i]when He appears, we may have (BQ)confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. 29 (BR)If you know that He is righteous, you know that (BS)everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.

The Command to Love

Behold (BT)what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that (BU)we should be called children of [j]God! Therefore the world does not know [k]us, (BV)because it did not know Him. Beloved, (BW)now we are children of God; and (BX)it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, (BY)we shall be like Him, for (BZ)we shall see Him as He is. (CA)And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Sin and the Child of God

Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and (CB)sin is lawlessness. And you know (CC)that He was manifested (CD)to take away our sins, and (CE)in Him there is no sin. Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.

Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. (CF)He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, (CG)that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been (CH)born of God does not sin, for (CI)His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.

The Imperative of Love(CJ)

10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. 11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, (CK)that we should love one another, 12 not as (CL)Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.

13 Do not marvel, my brethren, if (CM)the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love [l]his brother abides in death. 15 (CN)Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that (CO)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

The Outworking of Love

16 (CP)By this we know love, (CQ)because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But (CR)whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

18 My little children, (CS)let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we [m]know (CT)that we are of the truth, and shall [n]assure our hearts before Him. 20 (CU)For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, (CV)we have confidence toward God. 22 And (CW)whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments (CX)and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. 23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ (CY)and love one another, as He gave [o]us commandment.

The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error

24 Now (CZ)he who keeps His commandments (DA)abides in Him, and He in him. And (DB)by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

Love for God and One Another

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but (DC)test the spirits, whether they are of God; because (DD)many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: (DE)Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess [p]that Jesus [q]Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than (DF)he who is in the world. (DG)They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and (DH)the world hears them. We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. (DI)By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Knowing God Through Love(DJ)

(DK)Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who (DL)loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (DM)In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten (DN)Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, (DO)not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son (DP)to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, (DQ)if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Seeing God Through Love

12 (DR)No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13 (DS)By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 And (DT)we have seen and testify that (DU)the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 15 (DV)Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and (DW)he who abides in love abides in God, and God (DX)in him.

The Consummation of Love

17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that (DY)we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 (DZ)We love [r]Him because He first loved us.

Obedience by Faith

20 (EA)If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, [s]how can he love God (EB)whom he has not seen? 21 And (EC)this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

Obedience by Faith

Whoever believes that (ED)Jesus is the Christ is (EE)born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and (EF)keep His commandments. (EG)For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And (EH)His commandments are not burdensome. For (EI)whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that (EJ)has overcome the world—[t]our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but (EK)he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

The Certainty of God’s Witness

This is He who came (EL)by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. (EM)And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness [u]in heaven: the Father, (EN)the Word, and the Holy Spirit; (EO)and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: (EP)the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

If we receive (EQ)the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; (ER)for this is the witness of [v]God which He has testified of His Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God (ES)has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God (ET)has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 (EU)He who has the Son has [w]life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, [x]and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

Confidence and Compassion in Prayer

14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that (EV)if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and (EW)He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. (EX)There is sin leading to death. (EY)I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 (EZ)All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.

Knowing the True—Rejecting the False

18 We know that (FA)whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God (FB)keeps[y] [z]himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

19 We know that we are of God, and (FC)the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

20 And we know that the (FD)Son of God has come and (FE)has given us an understanding, (FF)that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. (FG)This is the true God (FH)and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Greeting the Elect Lady

The Elder,

To the [a]elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all those who have known (A)the truth, because of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever:

(B)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with [b]you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

Walk in Christ’s Commandments

I (C)rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: (D)that we love one another. (E)This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that (F)as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.

Beware of Antichrist Deceivers

For (G)many deceivers have gone out into the world (H)who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. (I)This is a deceiver and an antichrist. (J)Look to yourselves, (K)that [c]we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.

(L)Whoever [d]transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and (M)does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

John’s Farewell Greeting

12 (N)Having many things to write to you, I did not wish to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, (O)that our joy may be full.

13 (P)The children of your elect sister greet you. Amen.

Greeting to Gaius

The Elder,

To the beloved Gaius, (A)whom I love in truth:

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. For I (B)rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth. I have no greater (C)joy than to hear that (D)my children walk in [a]truth.

Gaius Commended for Generosity

Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren [b]and for strangers, who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well, because they went forth for His name’s sake, (E)taking nothing from the Gentiles. We therefore ought to (F)receive[c] such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.

Diotrephes and Demetrius

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, (G)prating[d] against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.

11 Beloved, (H)do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. (I)He who does good is of God, [e]but he who does evil has not seen (J)God.

12 Demetrius (K)has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself. And we also [f]bear witness, (L)and you know that our testimony is true.

Farewell Greeting

13 (M)I had many things to write, but I do not wish to write to you with pen and ink; 14 but I hope to see you shortly, and we shall speak face to face.

Peace to you. Our friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.

Introduction and Benediction

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, (A)which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must [a]shortly take place. And (B)He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, (C)who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things (D)that he saw. (E)Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for (F)the time is near.

Greeting the Seven Churches

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from Him (G)who is and (H)who was and who is to come, (I)and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, (J)the faithful (K)witness, the (L)firstborn from the dead, and (M)the ruler over the kings of the earth.

To Him (N)who [b]loved us (O)and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has (P)made us [c]kings and priests to His God and Father, (Q)to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Behold, He is coming with (R)clouds, and every eye will see Him, even (S)they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

(T)“I am the Alpha and the Omega, [d]the Beginning and the End,” says the [e]Lord, (U)“who is and who was and who is to come, the (V)Almighty.”

Vision of the Son of Man

I, John, [f]both your brother and (W)companion in the tribulation and (X)kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. 10 (Y)I was in the Spirit on (Z)the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me (AA)a loud voice, as of a trumpet, 11 saying, [g]“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches [h]which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”

12 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned (AB)I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 (AC)and in the midst of the seven lampstands (AD)One like the Son of Man, (AE)clothed with a garment down to the feet and (AF)girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and (AG)hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and (AH)His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 (AI)His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and (AJ)His voice as the sound of many waters; 16 (AK)He had in His right hand seven stars, (AL)out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, (AM)and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. 17 And (AN)when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But (AO)He laid His right hand on me, saying [i]to me, “Do not be afraid; (AP)I am the First and the Last. 18 (AQ)I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, (AR)I am alive forevermore. Amen. And (AS)I have the keys of [j]Hades and of Death. 19 [k]Write the things which you have (AT)seen, (AU)and the things which are, (AV)and the things which will take place after this. 20 The [l]mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are (AW)the [m]angels of the seven churches, and (AX)the seven lampstands [n]which you saw are the seven churches.

The Loveless Church

“To the [o]angel of the church of Ephesus write,

‘These things says (AY)He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, (AZ)who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands: (BA)“I know your works, your labor, your [p]patience, and that you cannot [q]bear those who are evil. And (BB)you have tested those (BC)who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have (BD)not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, (BE)or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

(BF)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give (BG)to eat from (BH)the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” ’

The Persecuted Church

“And to the [r]angel of the church in Smyrna write,

‘These things says (BI)the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are (BJ)rich); and I know the blasphemy of (BK)those who say they are Jews and are not, (BL)but are a [s]synagogue of Satan. 10 (BM)Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. (BN)Be faithful until death, and I will give you (BO)the crown of life.

11 (BP)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by (BQ)the second death.” ’

The Compromising Church

12 “And to the [t]angel of the church in Pergamos write,

‘These things says (BR)He who has the sharp two-edged sword: 13 “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of (BS)Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, (BT)to eat things sacrificed to idols, (BU)and to commit sexual immorality. 15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, [u]which thing I hate. 16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and (BV)will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.

17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden (BW)manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone (BX)a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” ’

The Corrupt Church

18 “And to the [v]angel of the church in Thyatira write,

‘These things says the Son of God, (BY)who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: 19 (BZ)“I know your works, love, [w]service, faith, and your [x]patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. 20 Nevertheless I have [y]a few things against you, because you allow [z]that woman (CA)Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, [aa]to teach and seduce My servants (CB)to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 And I gave her time (CC)to [ab]repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. 22 Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of [ac]their deeds. 23 I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who (CD)searches[ad] the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.

24 “Now to you I say, [ae]and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the (CE)depths of Satan, as they say, (CF)I [af]will put on you no other burden. 25 But hold fast (CG)what you have till I come. 26 And he who overcomes, and keeps (CH)My works until the end, (CI)to him I will give power over the nations—

27 ‘He(CJ) shall rule them with a rod of iron;
They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’—

as I also have received from My Father; 28 and I will give him (CK)the morning star.

29 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The Dead Church

“And to the [ag]angel of the church in Sardis write,

‘These things says He who (CL)has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before [ah]God. (CM)Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and (CN)repent. (CO)Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you (CP)as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you. [ai]You have (CQ)a few names [aj]even in Sardis who have not (CR)defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me (CS)in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes (CT)shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not (CU)blot out his name from the (CV)Book of Life; but (CW)I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

(CX)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The Faithful Church

“And to the [ak]angel of the church in Philadelphia write,

‘These things says (CY)He who is holy, (CZ)He who is true, (DA)“He who has the key of David, (DB)He who opens and no one shuts, and (DC)shuts and no one opens”: (DD)“I know your works. See, I have set before you (DE)an open door, [al]and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. Indeed I will make (DF)those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed (DG)I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept [am]My command to persevere, (DH)I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon (DI)the whole world, to test those who dwell (DJ)on the earth. 11 [an]Behold, (DK)I am coming quickly! (DL)Hold fast what you have, that no one may take (DM)your crown. 12 He who overcomes, I will make him (DN)a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall (DO)go out no more. (DP)I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the (DQ)New Jerusalem, which (DR)comes down out of heaven from My God. (DS)And I will write on him My new name.

13 (DT)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The Lukewarm Church

14 “And to the [ao]angel of the church [ap]of the Laodiceans write,

(DU)‘These things says the Amen, (DV)the Faithful and True Witness, (DW)the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 (DX)“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither [aq]cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, (DY)‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— 18 I counsel you (DZ)to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and (EA)white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 (EB)As many as I love, I rebuke and (EC)chasten.[ar] Therefore be [as]zealous and repent. 20 Behold, (ED)I stand at the door and knock. (EE)If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, (EF)I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes (EG)I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

22 (EH)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’ ”

The Throne Room of Heaven(EI)

After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing (EJ)open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a (EK)trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.”

Immediately (EL)I was in the Spirit; and behold, (EM)a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. [at]And He who sat there was (EN)like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; (EO)and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. (EP)Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, (EQ)clothed in white [au]robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded (ER)lightnings, [av]thunderings, and voices. (ES)Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are (ET)the[aw] seven Spirits of God.

Before the throne there [ax]was (EU)a sea of glass, like crystal. (EV)And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. (EW)The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having (EX)six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:

(EY)“Holy,[ay] holy, holy,
(EZ)Lord God Almighty,
(FA)Who was and is and is to come!”

Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, (FB)who lives forever and ever, 10 (FC)the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:

11 “You(FD) are worthy, [az]O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
(FE)For You created all things,
And by (FF)Your will they [ba]exist and were created.”

The Lamb Takes the Scroll

And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne (FG)a scroll written inside and on the back, (FH)sealed with seven seals. Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, (FI)“Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.

So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open [bb]and read the scroll, or to look at it. But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, (FJ)the Lion of the tribe of (FK)Judah, (FL)the Root of David, has (FM)prevailed to open the scroll (FN)and [bc]to loose its seven seals.”

And I looked, [bd]and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood (FO)a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and (FP)seven eyes, which are (FQ)the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand (FR)of Him who sat on the throne.

Worthy Is the Lamb

Now when He had taken the scroll, (FS)the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the (FT)prayers of the saints. And (FU)they sang a new song, saying:

(FV)“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And (FW)have redeemed us to God (FX)by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
10 And have made [be]us (FY)kings[bf] and (FZ)priests to our God;
And [bg]we shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice:

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And (GA)every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:

(GB)“Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him (GC)who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and [bh]ever!”

14 Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the [bi]twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped [bj]Him who lives forever and ever.

First Seal: The Conqueror

Now (GD)I saw when the Lamb opened one of the [bk]seals; and I heard (GE)one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.” And I looked, and behold, (GF)a white horse. (GG)He who sat on it had a bow; (GH)and a crown was given to him, and he went out (GI)conquering and to conquer.

Second Seal: Conflict on Earth

When He opened the second seal, (GJ)I heard the second living creature saying, “Come [bl]and see.” (GK)Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to (GL)take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.

Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth

When He opened the third seal, (GM)I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, (GN)a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of (GO)scales[bm] in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A [bn]quart of wheat for a [bo]denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and (GP)do not harm the oil and the wine.”

Fourth Seal: Widespread Death on Earth

When He opened the fourth seal, (GQ)I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” (GR)So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And [bp]power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, (GS)to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, (GT)and by the beasts of the earth.

Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs

When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under (GU)the altar (GV)the souls of those who had been slain (GW)for the word of God and for (GX)the testimony which they held. 10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, (GY)“How long, O Lord, (GZ)holy and true, (HA)until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then a (HB)white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them (HC)that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed.

Sixth Seal: Cosmic Disturbances

12 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, (HD)and [bq]behold, there was a great earthquake; and (HE)the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the [br]moon became like blood. 13 (HF)And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. 14 (HG)Then the sky [bs]receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and (HH)every mountain and island was moved out of its place. 15 And the (HI)kings of the earth, the great men, [bt]the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, (HJ)hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, 16 (HK)and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who (HL)sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of His wrath has come, (HM)and who is able to stand?”

The Sealed of Israel

After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, (HN)holding the four winds of the earth, (HO)that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree. Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, saying, (HP)“Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God (HQ)on their foreheads.” (HR)And I heard the number of those who were sealed. (HS)One hundred and forty-four thousand (HT)of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed:

of the tribe of Judah twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand were [bu]sealed;
of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed.

A Multitude from the Great Tribulation

After these things I looked, and behold, (HU)a great multitude which no one could number, (HV)of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, (HW)clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, (HX)“Salvation belongs to our God (HY)who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 (HZ)All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and (IA)worshiped God, 12 (IB)saying:

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever.
Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in (IC)white robes, and where did they come from?”

14 And I said to him, [bv]“Sir, you know.”

So he said to me, (ID)“These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and (IE)washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will (IF)dwell among them. 16 (IG)They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; (IH)the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; 17 for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne (II)will shepherd them and lead them to [bw]living fountains of waters. (IJ)And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Seventh Seal: Prelude to the Seven Trumpets

When(IK) He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. (IL)And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, (IM)and to them were given seven trumpets. Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with (IN)the prayers of all the saints upon (IO)the golden altar which was before the throne. And (IP)the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And (IQ)there were noises, thunderings, (IR)lightnings, (IS)and an earthquake.

So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

First Trumpet: Vegetation Struck

The first angel sounded: (IT)And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown (IU)to the [bx]earth. And a third (IV)of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

Second Trumpet: The Seas Struck

Then the second angel sounded: (IW)And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, (IX)and a third of the sea (IY)became blood. (IZ)And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

Third Trumpet: The Waters Struck

10 Then the third angel sounded: (JA)And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, (JB)and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 (JC)The name of the star is Wormwood. (JD)A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.

Fourth Trumpet: The Heavens Struck

12 (JE)Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day [by]did not shine, and likewise the night.

13 And I looked, (JF)and I heard an [bz]angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, (JG)“Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”

Fifth Trumpet: The Locusts from the Bottomless Pit

Then the fifth angel sounded: (JH)And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to (JI)the [ca]bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the (JJ)sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, (JK)as the scorpions of the earth have power. They were commanded (JL)not to harm (JM)the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have (JN)the seal of God on their foreheads. And [cb]they were not given authority to kill them, (JO)but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. In those days (JP)men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

(JQ)The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. (JR)On their heads were crowns of something like gold, (JS)and their faces were like the faces of men. They had hair like women’s hair, and (JT)their teeth were like lions’ teeth. And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was (JU)like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle. 10 They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had as king over them (JV)the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is [cc]Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name [cd]Apollyon.

12 (JW)One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things.

Sixth Trumpet: The Angels from the Euphrates

13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the (JX)golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound (JY)at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a (JZ)third of mankind. 16 Now (KA)the number of the army (KB)of the horsemen was two hundred million; (KC)I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; (KD)and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For [ce]their power is in their mouth and in their tails; (KE)for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm.

20 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (KF)did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship (KG)demons, (KH)and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. 21 And they did not repent of their murders (KI)or their [cf]sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

The Mighty Angel with the Little Book

10 I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. (KJ)And a rainbow was on (KK)his head, his face was like the sun, and (KL)his feet like pillars of fire. He had a little book open in his hand. (KM)And he set his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars. When he cried out, (KN)seven thunders uttered their voices. Now when the seven thunders [cg]uttered their voices, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven saying [ch]to me, (KO)“Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and do not write them.”

The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land (KP)raised up his [ci]hand to heaven and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, (KQ)who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it, (KR)that there should be delay no longer, but (KS)in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets.

John Eats the Little Book

Then the voice which I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the earth.”

So I went to the angel and said to him, “Give me the little book.”

And he said to me, (KT)“Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”

10 Then I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, (KU)and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, (KV)my stomach became bitter. 11 And [cj]he said to me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.”

The Two Witnesses

11 Then I was given (KW)a reed like a measuring rod. [ck]And the angel stood, saying, (KX)“Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. But leave out (KY)the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, (KZ)for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will (LA)tread the holy city underfoot for (LB)forty-two months. And I will give power to my two (LC)witnesses, (LD)and they will prophesy (LE)one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”

These are the (LF)two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the [cl]God of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, (LG)fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. (LH)And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. These (LI)have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.

The Witnesses Killed

When they (LJ)finish their testimony, (LK)the beast that ascends (LL)out of the bottomless pit (LM)will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies will lie in the street of (LN)the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, (LO)where also [cm]our Lord was crucified. (LP)Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations [cn]will see their dead bodies three-and-a-half days, (LQ)and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. 10 (LR)And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, (LS)and send gifts to one another, (LT)because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

The Witnesses Resurrected

11 (LU)Now after the three-and-a-half days (LV)the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 And [co]they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” (LW)And they ascended to heaven (LX)in a cloud, (LY)and their enemies saw them. 13 In the same hour (LZ)there was a great earthquake, (MA)and a tenth of the city fell. In the earthquake seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were afraid (MB)and gave glory to the God of heaven.

14 (MC)The second woe is past. Behold, the third woe is coming quickly.

Seventh Trumpet: The Kingdom Proclaimed

15 Then (MD)the seventh angel sounded: (ME)And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, (MF)“The [cp]kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, (MG)and He shall reign forever and ever!” 16 And (MH)the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and (MI)worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty,
The One (MJ)who is and who was [cq]and who is to come,
Because You have taken Your great power (MK)and reigned.
18 The nations were (ML)angry, and Your [cr]wrath has come,
And the time of the (MM)dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then (MN)the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of [cs]His covenant was seen in His temple. And (MO)there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, (MP)and great hail.

The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon

12 Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Then being with child, she cried out (MQ)in labor and in pain to give birth.

And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, (MR)a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. (MS)His tail drew a third (MT)of the stars of heaven (MU)and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood (MV)before the woman who was ready to give birth, (MW)to devour her Child as soon as it was born. She bore a male Child (MX)who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was (MY)caught up to God and His throne. Then (MZ)the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there (NA)one thousand two hundred and sixty days.

Satan Thrown Out of Heaven

And war broke out in heaven: (NB)Michael and his angels fought (NC)with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they [ct]did not prevail, nor was a place found for [cu]them in heaven any longer. So (ND)the great dragon was cast out, (NE)that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, (NF)who deceives the whole world; (NG)he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, (NH)“Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, (NI)who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. 11 And (NJ)they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, (NK)and they did not love their lives to the death. 12 Therefore (NL)rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! (NM)Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, (NN)because he knows that he has a short time.”

The Woman Persecuted

13 Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted (NO)the woman who gave birth to the male Child. 14 (NP)But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, (NQ)that she might fly (NR)into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished (NS)for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. 15 So the serpent (NT)spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus [cv]Christ.

The Beast from the Sea

13 Then [cw]I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw (NU)a beast rising up out of the sea, (NV)having [cx]seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a (NW)blasphemous name. Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The (NX)dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads (NY)as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And (NZ)all the world marveled and followed the beast. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, (OA)“Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”

And he was given (OB)a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to [cy]continue for (OC)forty-two months. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, (OD)His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. It was granted to him (OE)to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And (OF)authority was given him over every [cz]tribe, tongue, and nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, (OG)whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain (OH)from the foundation of the world.

(OI)If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 (OJ)He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; (OK)he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. (OL)Here is the [da]patience and the faith of the saints.

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then I saw another beast (OM)coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, (ON)whose deadly wound was healed. 13 (OO)He performs great signs, (OP)so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 (OQ)And he deceives [db]those who dwell on the earth (OR)by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword (OS)and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak (OT)and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, (OU)to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has [dc]the mark or (OV)the name of the beast, (OW)or the number of his name.

18 (OX)Here is wisdom. Let him who has (OY)understanding calculate (OZ)the number of the beast, (PA)for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

The Lamb and the 144,000

14 Then I looked, and behold, [dd]a (PB)Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him (PC)one hundred and forty-four thousand, [de]having His Father’s name (PD)written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, (PE)like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of (PF)harpists playing their harps. They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song (PG)except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth. These are the ones who were not defiled with women, (PH)for they are virgins. These are the ones (PI)who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These (PJ)were [df]redeemed from among men, (PK)being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb. And (PL)in their mouth was found no [dg]deceit, for (PM)they are without fault [dh]before the throne of God.

The Proclamations of Three Angels

Then I saw another angel (PN)flying in the midst of heaven, (PO)having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—(PP)to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people— saying with a loud voice, (PQ)“Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; (PR)and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.”

And another angel followed, saying, (PS)“Babylon[di] is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because (PT)she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”

Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, (PU)“If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his (PV)mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he himself (PW)shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is (PX)poured out full strength into (PY)the cup of His indignation. (PZ)He shall be tormented with (QA)fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And (QB)the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

12 (QC)Here is the [dj]patience of the saints; (QD)here[dk] are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven saying [dl]to me, “Write: (QE)‘Blessed are the dead (QF)who die in the Lord from now on.’ ”

“Yes,” says the Spirit, (QG)“that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow (QH)them.”

Reaping the Earth’s Harvest

14 Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel (QI)came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, (QJ)“Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come [dm]for You to reap, for the harvest (QK)of the earth is ripe.” 16 So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.

Reaping the Grapes of Wrath

17 Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

18 And another angel came out from the altar, (QL)who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, (QM)“Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe.” 19 So the angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into (QN)the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And (QO)the winepress was trampled (QP)outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, (QQ)up to the horses’ bridles, for one thousand six hundred [dn]furlongs.
