The children of Ephraim, being armed and [a]carrying bows,
Turned back in the day of battle.
10 (A)They did not keep the covenant of God;
They refused to walk in His law,
11 And (B)forgot His works
And His wonders that He had shown them.

12 (C)Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers,
In the land of Egypt, (D)in the field of Zoan.
13 (E)He divided the sea and caused them to pass through;
And (F)He made the waters stand up like a heap.
14 (G)In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
And all the night with a light of fire.
15 (H)He split the rocks in the wilderness,
And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.
16 He also brought (I)streams out of the rock,
And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 But they sinned even more against Him
By (J)rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.
18 And (K)they tested God in their heart
By asking for the food of their fancy.
19 (L)Yes, they spoke against God:
They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 (M)Behold, He struck the rock,
So that the waters gushed out,
And the streams overflowed.
Can He give bread also?
Can He provide meat for His people?”

21 Therefore the Lord heard this and (N)was furious;
So a fire was kindled against Jacob,
And anger also came up against Israel,
22 Because they (O)did not believe in God,
And did not trust in His salvation.
23 Yet He had commanded the clouds above,
(P)And opened the doors of heaven,
24 (Q)Had rained down manna on them to eat,
And given them of the [b]bread of (R)heaven.
25 Men ate angels’ food;
He sent them food to [c]the full.

26 (S)He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens;
And by His power He brought in the south wind.
27 He also rained meat on them like the dust,
Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas;
28 And He let them fall in the midst of their camp,
All around their dwellings.
29 (T)So they ate and were well filled,
For He gave them their own desire.
30 They were not [d]deprived of their craving;
But (U)while their food was still in their mouths,
31 The wrath of God came against them,
And slew the stoutest of them,
And struck down the choice men of Israel.

Sons of Ephraim -- armed bearers of bow, Have turned in a day of conflict.

10 They have not kept the covenant of God, And in His law they have refused to walk,

11 And they forget His doings, And His wonders that He shewed them.

12 Before their fathers He hath done wonders, In the land of Egypt -- the field of Zoan.

13 He cleft a sea, and causeth them to pass over, Yea, He causeth waters to stand as a heap.

14 And leadeth them with a cloud by day, And all the night with a light of fire.

15 He cleaveth rocks in a wilderness, And giveth drink -- as the great deep.

16 And bringeth out streams from a rock, And causeth waters to come down as rivers.

17 And they add still to sin against Him, To provoke the Most High in the dry place.

18 And they try God in their heart, To ask food for their lust.

19 And they speak against God -- they said: `Is God able to array a table in a wilderness?'

20 Lo, He hath smitten a rock, And waters flow, yea, streams overflow. `Also -- bread [is] He able to give? Doth He prepare flesh for His people?'

21 Therefore hath Jehovah heard, And He sheweth Himself wroth, And fire hath been kindled against Jacob, And anger also hath gone up against Israel,

22 For they have not believed in God, Nor have they trusted in His salvation.

23 And He commandeth clouds from above, Yea, doors of the heavens He hath opened.

24 And He raineth on them manna to eat, Yea, corn of heaven He hath given to them.

25 Food of the mighty hath each eaten, Venison He sent to them to satiety.

26 He causeth an east wind to journey in the heavens, And leadeth by His strength a south wind,

27 And He raineth on them flesh as dust, And as sand of the seas -- winged fowl,

28 And causeth [it] to fall in the midst of His camp, Round about His tabernacles.

29 And they eat, and are greatly satisfied, And their desire He bringeth to them.

30 They have not been estranged from their desire, Yet [is] their food in their mouth,

31 And the anger of God hath gone up against them, And He slayeth among their fat ones, And youths of Israel He caused to bend.

The sons of Ephraim [a]were (A)archers equipped with bows,
Yet (B)they turned back on the day of battle.
10 They (C)did not keep the covenant of God

11 They (E)forgot His deeds
And His [b]miracles that He had shown them.

And He made the waters stand (I)up like a heap.
14 Then He led them with the cloud by (J)day
And all the night with a (K)light of fire.
15 He (L)split the rocks in the wilderness
And gave them plenty to drink like the ocean depths.
16 He (M)brought forth streams from the rock
And made waters run down like rivers.

17 Yet they still continued to sin against Him,
To (N)rebel against the Most High in the desert.
18 And in their heart they (O)put God to the test
By asking for (P)food [c]that suited their taste.
19 Then they spoke against God;
They said, “(Q)Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 Behold, He (R)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,
And streams were overflowing;
Can He also provide bread?
Will He prepare (S)meat for His people?”

21 Therefore the Lord heard and [d]was (T)full of wrath;
And a fire was kindled against Jacob,
And anger also mounted against Israel,
22 Because they (U)did not believe in God
And did not trust in His salvation.
23 Yet He commanded the clouds above
And (V)opened the doors of heaven;
24 He (W)rained down manna upon them to eat,

25 Man ate the bread of [f]angels;
He sent them [g]food [h](Y)in abundance.
26 He (Z)made the east wind blow in the sky
And by His [i]power He directed the south wind.
27 When He rained meat upon them like the dust,
Even (AA)winged fowl like the sand of the seas,
28 He let them fall in the midst of [j]their camp,
All around their dwellings.
29 So they (AB)ate and were well filled,
And He [k]satisfied their longing.
30 [l]Yet before they had abandoned their longing,
(AC)While their food was in their mouths,
31 The (AD)anger of God rose against them
And killed [m]some of their (AE)strongest ones,
And [n]subdued the choice men of Israel.
