49 He cast on them the fierceness of His anger,
Wrath, indignation, and trouble,
By sending angels of destruction among them.
50 He made a path for His anger;
He did not spare their soul from death,
But gave [a]their life over to the plague,
51 And destroyed all the (A)firstborn in Egypt,
The first of their strength in the tents of Ham.
52 But He (B)made His own people go forth like sheep,
And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;
53 And He (C)led them on safely, so that they did not fear;
But the sea (D)overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And He brought them to His (E)holy border,
This mountain (F)which His right hand had acquired.
55 (G)He also drove out the nations before them,
(H)Allotted them an inheritance by [b]survey,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.

56 (I)Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God,
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But (J)turned back and acted unfaithfully like their fathers;
They were turned aside (K)like a deceitful bow.
58 (L)For they provoked Him to anger with their (M)high places,
And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.
59 When God heard this, He was furious,
And greatly abhorred Israel,
60 (N)So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh,
The tent He had placed among men,
61 (O)And delivered His strength into captivity,
And His glory into the enemy’s hand.
62 (P)He also gave His people over to the sword,
And was furious with His inheritance.
63 The fire consumed their young men,
And (Q)their maidens were not given in marriage.
64 (R)Their priests fell by the sword,
And (S)their widows made no lamentation.

65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
(T)Like a mighty man who shouts because of wine.
66 And (U)He beat back His enemies;
He put them to a perpetual reproach.

67 Moreover He rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion (V)which He loved.
69 And He built His (W)sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.
70 (X)He also chose David His servant,
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71 From following (Y)the ewes that had young He brought him,
(Z)To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.
72 So he shepherded them according to the (AA)integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

49 He sendeth on them the fury of His anger, Wrath, and indignation, and distress -- A discharge of evil messengers.

50 He pondereth a path for His anger, He kept not back their soul from death, Yea, their life to the pestilence He delivered up.

51 And He smiteth every first-born in Egypt, The first-fruit of the strong in tents of Ham.

52 And causeth His people to journey as a flock, And guideth them as a drove in a wilderness,

53 And He leadeth them confidently, And they have not been afraid, And their enemies hath the sea covered.

54 And He bringeth them in unto the border of His sanctuary, This mountain His right hand had got,

55 And casteth out nations from before them, And causeth them to fall in the line of inheritance, And causeth the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents,

56 And they tempt and provoke God Most High, And His testimonies have not kept.

57 And they turn back, And deal treacherously like their fathers, They have been turned like a deceitful bow,

58 And make Him angry with their high places, And with their graven images make Him zealous,

59 God hath heard, and sheweth Himself wroth. And kicketh exceedingly against Israel.

60 And He leaveth the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent He had placed among men,

61 And He giveth His strength to captivity, And His beauty into the hand of an adversary,

62 And delivereth up to the sword His people, And with His inheritance shewed Himself angry.

63 His young men hath fire consumed, And His virgins have not been praised.

64 His priests by the sword have fallen, And their widows weep not.

65 And the Lord waketh as a sleeper, As a mighty one crying aloud from wine.

66 And He smiteth His adversaries backward, A reproach age-during He hath put on them,

67 And He kicketh against the tent of Joseph, And on the tribe of Ephraim hath not fixed.

68 And He chooseth the tribe of Judah, With mount Zion that He loved,

69 And buildeth His sanctuary as a high place, Like the earth, He founded it to the age.

70 And He fixeth on David His servant, And taketh him from the folds of a flock,

71 From behind suckling ones He hath brought him in, To rule over Jacob His people, And over Israel His inheritance.

72 And he ruleth them according to the integrity of his heart, And by the skilfulness of his hands leadeth them!

49 He (A)sent His burning anger upon them,
Fury and indignation and trouble,
A band of [a]destroying angels.
50 He leveled a path for His anger;
He did not spare their souls from death,
But (B)turned their lives over to the plague,
51 And (C)struck all the firstborn in Egypt,
The (D)first and best of their vigor in the tents of (E)Ham.
52 But He (F)led His own people out like sheep,
And guided them in the wilderness (G)like a flock;
53 He led them (H)safely, so that they did not fear;
But (I)the sea engulfed their enemies.

54 So (J)He brought them to His holy [b]land,
To this [c](K)hill country (L)which His right hand had gained.
55 He also (M)drove out the nations from them
And (N)apportioned them as an inheritance by measurement,
And had the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
56 Yet they [d](O)tempted and (P)rebelled against the Most High God
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But turned back and (Q)acted treacherously like their fathers;
They (R)turned aside like a treacherous bow.
58 For they (S)provoked Him with their (T)high places
And (U)moved Him to jealousy with their (V)carved images.
59 When God heard them, He [e]was filled with (W)wrath
And He utterly (X)rejected Israel;
60 So that He (Y)abandoned the (Z)dwelling place at Shiloh,
The tent [f]which He had pitched among people,
61 And He gave up His (AA)strength to captivity
And His glory (AB)into the hand of the enemy.
62 He also (AC)turned His people over to the sword,
And [g]was filled with wrath at His inheritance.
63 (AD)Fire devoured [h]His young men,
And [i]His (AE)virgins had no wedding songs.
64 [j]His (AF)priests fell by the sword,
And [k]His (AG)widows could not weep.

65 Then the Lord (AH)awoke as if from sleep,
Like a (AI)warrior [l]overcome by wine.
66 He [m](AJ)drove His adversaries backward;
He put on them an everlasting disgrace.
67 He also (AK)rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount (AL)Zion, which He loved.
69 And He (AM)built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.
70 He also (AN)chose His servant David
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71 From [n](AO)the care of the [o]ewes (AP)with nursing lambs He brought him
To (AQ)shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel (AR)His inheritance.
72 So he shepherded them according to the (AS)integrity of his heart,
And guided them with his skillful hands.
