Psalm 66:1-12

Psalm 66

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.

¹Shout for joy to God, all the earth!^(A)
²    Sing the glory of his name;^(B)
    make his praise glorious.^(C)
³Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!^(D)
    So great is your power
    that your enemies cringe^(E) before you.
⁴All the earth bows down^(F) to you;
    they sing praise^(G) to you,
    they sing the praises of your name.”^[a]

⁵Come and see what God has done,
    his awesome deeds^(H) for mankind!
⁶He turned the sea into dry land,^(I)
    they passed through^(J) the waters on foot—
    come, let us rejoice^(K) in him.
⁷He rules forever^(L) by his power,
    his eyes watch^(M) the nations—
    let not the rebellious^(N) rise up against him.

⁸Praise^(O) our God, all peoples,
    let the sound of his praise be heard;
⁹he has preserved our lives^(P)
    and kept our feet from slipping.^(Q)
¹⁰For you, God, tested^(R) us;
    you refined us like silver.^(S)
¹¹You brought us into prison^(T)
    and laid burdens^(U) on our backs.
¹²You let people ride over our heads;^(V)
    we went through fire and water,
    but you brought us to a place of abundance.^(W)

Spiritual Fullness in Christ

⁶So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord,^(A) continue to live your lives in him, ⁷rooted^(B) and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught,^(C) and overflowing with thankfulness.

⁸See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,^(D) which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces^[a] of this world^(E) rather than on Christ.

⁹For in Christ all the fullness^(F) of the Deity lives in bodily form, ¹⁰and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head^(G) over every power and authority.^(H) ¹¹In him you were also circumcised^(I) with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh^[b]^(J) was put off when you were circumcised by^[c] Christ, ¹²having been buried with him in baptism,^(K) in which you were also raised with him^(L) through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.^(M)

¹³When you were dead in your sins^(N) and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you^[d] alive^(O) with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,^(P) ¹⁴having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness,^(Q) which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.^(R) ¹⁵And having disarmed the powers and authorities,^(S) he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them^(T) by the cross.^[e]

Luke 11:14-28

Jesus and Beelzebul^(A)^(B)

¹⁴Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.^(C) ¹⁵But some of them said, “By Beelzebul,^(D) the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”^(E) ¹⁶Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.^(F)

¹⁷Jesus knew their thoughts^(G) and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. ¹⁸If Satan^(H) is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. ¹⁹Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. ²⁰But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,^(I) then the kingdom of God^(J) has come upon you.

²¹“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. ²²But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.

²³“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.^(K)

²⁴“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ ²⁵When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. ²⁶Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”^(L)

²⁷As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”^(M)

²⁸He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God^(N) and obey it.”^(O)
