Psalm 63

Praise God Who Satisfies

A psalm of David. When he was in the Wilderness of Judah.^(A)

¹God, you are my God; I eagerly seek you.
I thirst for you;
my body faints for you
in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water.^(B)
²So I gaze on you in the sanctuary
to see your strength and your glory.^(C)

³My lips will glorify you
because your faithful love is better than life.^(D)
⁴So I will bless you as long as I live;
at your name, I will lift up my hands.^(E)
⁵You satisfy me as with rich food;^[a]^(F)
my mouth will praise you with joyful lips.^(G)

⁶When I think of you as I lie on my bed,
I meditate on you during the night watches^(H)
⁷because you are my helper;^(I)
I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.^(J)
⁸I follow close to you;
your right hand holds on to me.^(K)

⁹But those who intend to destroy my life
will go into the depths of the earth.^(L)
¹⁰They will be given over to the power of the sword;^(M)
they will become a meal for jackals.
¹¹But the king will rejoice in God;^(N)
all who swear by him will boast,
for the mouths of liars will be shut.^(O)

16 The reflections of the heart belong to mankind,
but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.^(A)

²All a person’s ways seem right to him,
but the Lord weighs motives.^[a]^(B)

³Commit your activities to the Lord,
and your plans will be established.^(C)

⁴The Lord has prepared everything for his purpose—
even the wicked for the day of disaster.^(D)

⁵Everyone with a proud heart is detestable to the Lord;^(E)
be assured,^[b] he will not go unpunished.^(F)

⁶Iniquity is atoned for by loyalty and faithfulness,^(G)
and one turns from evil by the fear of the Lord.^(H)

⁷When a person’s ways please the Lord,
he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.^(I)

⁸Better a little with righteousness
than great income with injustice.^(J)

⁹A person’s heart plans his way,
but the Lord determines his steps.^(K)

¹⁰God’s verdict is on the lips of a king;^[c]^(L)
his mouth should not give an unfair judgment.^(M)

Difficult Times Ahead

3 But know this: Hard times will come in the last days.^(A) ²For people will be lovers of self,^(B) lovers of money,^(C) boastful, proud,^(D) demeaning, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,^(E) ³unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers,^(F) without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good,^(G) ⁴traitors,^(H) reckless,^(I) conceited,^(J) lovers of pleasure^(K) rather than lovers of God, ⁵holding to the form of godliness but denying its power.^(L) Avoid these people.^(M)

⁶For among them are those who worm their way into households and deceive gullible women overwhelmed by sins and led astray by a variety of passions,^(N) ⁷always learning and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.^(O) ⁸Just as Jannes and Jambres^(P) resisted Moses,^(Q) so these also resist the truth. They are men who are corrupt in mind^(R) and worthless^(S) in regard to the faith. ⁹But they will not make further progress, for their foolishness will be clear to all, as was the foolishness of Jannes and Jambres.
