³ For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.^(I)
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned^(J)
    and done what is evil in your sight;^(K)
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.^(L)
5 Surely I was sinful^(M) at birth,^(N)
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
⁶ Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom^(O) in that secret place.^(P)

⁷ Cleanse^(Q) me with hyssop,^(R) and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.^(S)
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;^(T)
    let the bones^(U) you have crushed rejoice.
⁹ Hide your face from my sins^(V)
    and blot out^(W) all my iniquity.

¹⁰ Create in me a pure heart,^(X) O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.^(Y)
11 Do not cast me^(Z) from your presence^(AA)
    or take your Holy Spirit^(AB) from me.
¹² Restore to me the joy of your salvation^(AC)
    and grant me a willing spirit,^(AD) to sustain me.^(AE)

¹³ Then I will teach transgressors your ways,^(AF)
    so that sinners^(AG) will turn back to you.^(AH)
14 Deliver me^(AI) from the guilt of bloodshed,^(AJ) O God,
    you who are God my Savior,^(AK)
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.^(AL)
15 Open my lips, Lord,^(AM)
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
¹⁶ You do not delight in sacrifice,^(AN) or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
¹⁷ My sacrifice,^(AO) O God, is^[b] a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart^(AP)
    you, God, will not despise.

¹⁸ May it please you to prosper Zion,^(AQ)
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.^(AR)
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,^(AS)
    in burnt offerings^(AT) offered whole;
    then bulls^(AU) will be offered on your altar.

³ Set a guard over my mouth,^(F) Lord;
    keep watch over the door of my lips.^(G)
4 Do not let my heart^(H) be drawn to what is evil
    so that I take part in wicked deeds^(I)
along with those who are evildoers;
    do not let me eat their delicacies.^(J)

⁵ Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness;
    let him rebuke me^(K)—that is oil on my head.^(L)
My head will not refuse it,
    for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.

⁶ Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs,^(M)
    and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.
⁷ They will say, “As one plows^(N) and breaks up the earth,^(O)
    so our bones have been scattered at the mouth^(P) of the grave.”

⁸ But my eyes are fixed^(Q) on you, Sovereign Lord;
    in you I take refuge^(R)—do not give me over to death.
⁹ Keep me safe^(S) from the traps set by evildoers,^(T)
    from the snares^(U) they have laid for me.
¹⁰ Let the wicked fall^(V) into their own nets,
    while I pass by in safety.^(W)

³ When I kept silent,^(D)
    my bones wasted away^(E)
    through my groaning^(F) all day long.
⁴ For day and night
    your hand was heavy^(G) on me;
my strength was sapped^(H)
    as in the heat of summer.^[b]

⁵ Then I acknowledged my sin to you
    and did not cover up my iniquity.^(I)
I said, “I will confess^(J)
    my transgressions^(K) to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.^(L)

⁶ Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;^(M)
surely the rising^(N) of the mighty waters^(O)
    will not reach them.^(P)
7 You are my hiding place;^(Q)
    you will protect me from trouble^(R)
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.^(S)

⁸ I will instruct^(T) you and teach you^(U) in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on^(V) you.
⁹ Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle^(W)
    or they will not come to you.
¹⁰ Many are the woes of the wicked,^(X)
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts^(Y) in him.

¹¹ Rejoice in the Lord^(Z) and be glad, you righteous;
    sing, all you who are upright in heart!

⁵ You prepare a table^(K) before me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;^(L)
    my cup^(M) overflows.
⁶ Surely your goodness and love^(N) will follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

³ He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
⁴ indeed, he who watches^(C) over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

⁵ The Lord watches over^(D) you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
⁶ the sun^(E) will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

⁷ The Lord will keep you from all harm^(F)—
    he will watch over your life;
⁸ the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.^(G)

³ Who may ascend the mountain^(D) of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?^(E)
4 The one who has clean hands^(F) and a pure heart,^(G)
    who does not trust in an idol^(H)
    or swear by a false god.^[a]

⁵ They will receive blessing^(I) from the Lord
    and vindication^(J) from God their Savior.
⁶ Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek your face,^(K) God of Jacob.^[b][c]

⁷ Lift up your heads, you gates;^(L)
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King^(M) of glory^(N) may come in.^(O)
8 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,^(P)
    the Lord mighty in battle.^(Q)
9 Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
¹⁰ Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty^(R)—
    he is the King of glory.

⁴ Shout for joy^(M) to the Lord, all the earth,
    burst into jubilant song with music;
⁵ make music to the Lord with the harp,^(N)
    with the harp and the sound of singing,^(O)
6 with trumpets^(P) and the blast of the ram’s horn^(Q)—
    shout for joy^(R) before the Lord, the King.^(S)

⁷ Let the sea^(T) resound, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it.^(U)
8 Let the rivers clap their hands,^(V)
    let the mountains^(W) sing together for joy;
⁹ let them sing before the Lord,
    for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
    and the peoples with equity.^(X)
