Jerusalem, the City of God
A psalm of the sons of Korah.
48 The Lord is great; he should be praised
in the city of our God, on his holy mountain.
2 It is high and beautiful
and brings joy to the whole world.
Mount Zion is like the high mountains of the north;
it is the city of the Great King.
3 God is within its palaces;
he is known as its defender.
4 Kings joined together
and came to attack the city.
5 But when they saw it, they were amazed.
They ran away in fear.
6 Fear took hold of them;
they hurt like a woman having a baby.
7 You destroyed the large trading ships
with an east wind.
8 First we heard
and now we have seen
that God will always keep his city safe.
It is the city of the Lord All-Powerful,
the city of our God. Selah
9 God, we come into your Temple
to think about your love.
10 God, your name is known everywhere;
all over the earth people praise you.
Your right hand is full of goodness.
11 Mount Zion is happy
and all the towns of Judah rejoice,
because your decisions are fair.
12 Walk around Jerusalem
and count its towers.
13 Notice how strong they are.
Look at the palaces.
Then you can tell your children about them.
14 This God is our God forever and ever.
He will guide us from now on.

48 (48:1) Cantique. Psaume des fils de Koré. (48:2) L'Éternel est grand, il est l'objet de toutes les louanges, Dans la ville de notre Dieu, sur sa montagne sainte.
2 (48:3) Belle est la colline, joie de toute la terre, la montagne de Sion; Le côté septentrional, c'est la ville du grand roi.
3 (48:4) Dieu, dans ses palais, est connu pour une haute retraite.
4 (48:5) Car voici, les rois s'étaient concertés: Ils n'ont fait que passer ensemble.
5 (48:6) Ils ont regardé, tout stupéfaits, Ils ont eu peur, et ont pris la fuite.
6 (48:7) Là un tremblement les a saisis, Comme la douleur d'une femme qui accouche.
7 (48:8) Ils ont été chassés comme par le vent d'orient, Qui brise les navires de Tarsis.
8 (48:9) Ce que nous avions entendu dire, nous l'avons vu Dans la ville de l'Éternel des armées, Dans la ville de notre Dieu: Dieu la fera subsister à toujours. -Pause.
9 (48:10) O Dieu, nous pensons à ta bonté Au milieu de ton temple.
10 (48:11) Comme ton nom, ô Dieu! Ta louange retentit jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre; Ta droite est pleine de justice.
11 (48:12) La montagne de Sion se réjouit, Les filles de Juda sont dans l'allégresse, A cause de tes jugements.
12 (48:13) Parcourez Sion, parcourez-en l'enceinte, Comptez ses tours,
13 (48:14) Observez son rempart, Examinez ses palais, Pour le raconter à la génération future.
14 (48:15) Voilà le Dieu qui est notre Dieu éternellement et à jamais; Il sera notre guide jusqu'à la mort.

Zion, the City of God[a]
48 The Lord is great and is to be highly praised
in the city of our God, on his sacred hill.[b]
2 (A)Zion, the mountain of God, is high and beautiful;
the city of the great king brings joy to all the world.
3 God has shown that there is safety with him
inside the fortresses of the city.
4 The kings gathered together
and came to attack Mount Zion.
5 But when they saw it, they were amazed;
they were afraid and ran away.
6 There they were seized with fear and anguish,
like a woman about to bear a child,
7 like ships tossing in a furious storm.
8 We have heard what God has done,
and now we have seen it
in the city of our God, the Lord Almighty;
he will keep the city safe forever.
9 Inside your Temple, O God,
we think of your constant love.
10 You are praised by people everywhere,
and your fame extends over all the earth.
You rule with justice;
11 let the people of Zion be glad!
You give right judgments;
let there be joy in the cities of Judah!
12 People of God, walk around Zion and count the towers;
13 take notice of the walls and examine the fortresses,
so that you may tell the next generation:
14 “This God is our God forever and ever;
he will lead us for all time to come.”

1 Great is the Lord,(A) and most worthy of praise,(B)
in the city of our God,(C) his holy mountain.(D)
2 Beautiful(E) in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon[b](F) is Mount Zion,(G)
the city of the Great King.(H)
3 God is in her citadels;(I)
he has shown himself to be her fortress.(J)
4 When the kings joined forces,
when they advanced together,(K)
5 they saw her and were astounded;
they fled in terror.(L)
6 Trembling seized(M) them there,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(N)
7 You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish(O)
shattered by an east wind.(P)
8 As we have heard,
so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
forever.[c](Q)
9 Within your temple, O God,
we meditate(R) on your unfailing love.(S)
10 Like your name,(T) O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;(U)
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11 Mount Zion rejoices,
the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.(V)
12 Walk about Zion, go around her,
count her towers,(W)
13 consider well her ramparts,(X)
view her citadels,(Y)
that you may tell of them
to the next generation.(Z)
14 For this God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide(AA) even to the end.
