Psalm 40:2

²He brought me up out of the ^(A)pit of ^[a]destruction, out of the mud;
And ^(B)He set my feet on a rock, ^(C)making my footsteps firm.

Psalm 40:2

New Living Translation

²He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground
and steadied me as I walked along.

²and pulled me
from a lonely pit
full of mud and mire.
You let me stand on a rock
with my feet firm,

²He lifted me out of the grave.^[a]
He lifted me from that muddy place.^[b]
He picked me up, put me on solid ground,
and kept my feet from slipping.

Psalm 40:2 grave Literally, “pit of destruction.” That is, “Sheol,” the place of death.
Psalm 40:2 muddy place In many ancient stories, Sheol, the place of death, is a dark place with mud all around, like a grave.
