Psalm 39[a]

The Brevity and Vanity of Life

For the director.[b] For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

I said, “I will be careful of my behavior
    so as not to sin with my tongue.
I will keep a muzzle on my mouth[c]
    whenever the wicked are in my presence.”
I kept completely silent
    and refrained from speech,
    but my distress only increased.
My heart[d] smoldered within me,
    and, as I pondered, my mind was inflamed,
    and my tongue began to speak:
[e]“O Lord, let me know my end
    and the number of days left to me;
    show me how fleeting my life is.
You have allotted me a short span of days;
    my life is as nothing in your sight;
    human existence is a mere breath. Selah
Humans are nothing but a passing shadow;
    the riches they amass are a mere breath,
    and they do not know who will enjoy them.[f]
“So now, O Lord, what do I wait for?
    My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my sins;
    do not subject me to the taunts of fools.[g]
10 “I was silent and did not open my mouth,
    for it is you who have done it.
11 Remove your scourge from me;
    I am crushed by the blows of your hand.
12 You rebuke and punish people for their sins;
    like a moth you consume all their desires;
    human existence is a mere puff of wind. Selah
13 [h]“Hear my prayer, O Lord;
    do not be deaf to my cry
    or ignore my weeping.
For I am a wayfarer[i] before you,
    a nomad like all my ancestors.
14 Turn your eyes away so that I may be glad
    before I depart and am no more.”[j]

  1. Psalm 39:1 The psalmist is not a sage who reflects on existence but a man grappling with God. In the face of the blows that strike him, he realizes the total frailty of existence and even of life itself. He would like to cast out from his heart all intentions to rebel, but it is impossible for him to hold back his complaint any longer. A real faith in the resurrection is still absent and, apart from an intervention of God providing a new breath of life, everything seems a mockery. One thinks of the lucid reflections of Ecclesiastes 1:2.
    This psalm reminds us that while doing our utmost to acquire and develop the eternal divine life in us, we must regard our bodily life as the highest good, the most precious natural talent entrusted to us by God for our vigilant concern and fruitful action. The heavenly Father himself watches over this life, assigning it food and drink (see Mt 6:25-34) and life itself (see Acts 17:25-28). Jesus himself watches over material life, looking after the hunger of the crowd (see Mt 15:32), curing the sick (Mt 4:23), and raising the dead (Mt 9:25). We must thus greatly value our life and seek to prolong it for the glory of God and our spiritual progress (see Phil 1:23-26). Christians too have this same feeling in times of great distress: without the Lord what value is there in life?
  2. Psalm 39:1 For the director: these words are thought to be a musical or liturgical notation. Jeduthun: he is believed to be one of the three men appointed choral directors by David (see 1 Chr 25:1). See note on Ps 89:1.

  5. Psalm 39:5 The psalmist begs God to help him know and accept the brevity and vanity of life, a brevity and vanity stressed in other psalms (see Pss 62:10; 73:19; 90:10-11) and in Isa 40:17.

  8. Psalm 39:13 The psalmist—a sinner and overcome with adversity—feels like a stranger in God’s presence and in his world. Still, he has no doubts about belonging to the covenant community. So he begs the Lord to remove his judgment from him so that the psalmist may know joy once again.
  9. Psalm 39:13 Wayfarer: that is, one who is only a temporary sojourner on earth (see Lev 25:23: “The land belongs to me and you are my aliens and tenants”; see also Ps 119:19; 1 Pet 2:11).
  10. Psalm 39:14 Am no more: in the time of the psalmist there apparently was no idea of any resurrection, even a mitigated one in the netherworld (see note on Ps 6:6).

Life Is Short

For the director of music. For Jeduthun [C Levitical musician; 1 Chr. 16:41–42; 25:1, 6; 2 Chr. 5:12]. A psalm of David.

39 I said, “I will ·be careful how I act [L guard my way]
    and will not sin ·by what I say [L with my tongue].
I will ·be careful what I say [L keep a muzzle on my mouth]
    around wicked people.”
So I kept ·very quiet [silent and still].
    I didn’t even say anything good,
    but ·I became even more upset [L my agony/sorrow got worse].
·I became very angry inside [L My heart grew hot within me],
    and as I ·thought [meditated] about it, ·my anger [L a fire] burned.
    So I ·spoke [L said with my tongue]:
Lord, ·tell [inform; reveal to] me when ·the end [or my end] will come
    and how long ·I will live [L will be my days].
    Let me know how ·long I have [L fleeting I am; 90:1–12].
You have given ·me only a short life [L my days a handbreadth; C about four inches];
    my lifetime is like nothing to you.
    Everyone’s life is only ·a breath [vapor; Eccl. 1:2]. ·Selah [Interlude]
People are like shadows moving about.
    All their ·work [or wealth; or turmoil] is ·for nothing [a breath/vapor; Luke 12:13–21; James 4:3–17];
they ·collect things [accumulate riches/wealth] but don’t know who will ·get [gather] them.

“So, Lord, what ·hope do I have [do I wait for]?
    You are my hope.
Save me from all my ·sins [transgressions].
    Don’t ·let wicked fools make fun of me [L set the scorn of fools on me].
I am quiet; I do not open my mouth,
    because you are the one who has done this.
10 ·Quit punishing me [L Turn your blows/scourge away from me];
    ·your beating is about to kill me [L I am exhausted/finished from the hostility/beatings of your hand].
11 You correct and punish people for their sins;
    like a moth, you destroy what they ·love [covet; desire].

12 Lord, hear my prayer,
    and listen to my cry.
    Do not ignore my tears.
I am like a ·visitor [sojourner; wanderer; resident alien] with you.
    Like my ·ancestors [fathers], I’m only ·here a short time [a temporary resident].
13 Leave me alone so I can be happy
    before I leave and am no more.”

I said, “I will watch my ways(A)
    and keep my tongue from sin;(B)
I will put a muzzle on my mouth(C)
    while in the presence of the wicked.”
So I remained utterly silent,(D)
    not even saying anything good.
But my anguish(E) increased;
    my heart grew hot(F) within me.
While I meditated,(G) the fire(H) burned;
    then I spoke with my tongue:

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end
    and the number of my days;(I)
    let me know how fleeting(J) my life is.(K)
You have made my days(L) a mere handbreadth;
    the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,(M)
    even those who seem secure.[b]

“Surely everyone goes around(N) like a mere phantom;(O)
    in vain they rush about,(P) heaping up wealth(Q)
    without knowing whose it will finally be.(R)

“But now, Lord, what do I look for?
    My hope is in you.(S)
Save me(T) from all my transgressions;(U)
    do not make me the scorn(V) of fools.
I was silent;(W) I would not open my mouth,(X)
    for you are the one who has done this.(Y)
10 Remove your scourge from me;
    I am overcome by the blow(Z) of your hand.(AA)
11 When you rebuke(AB) and discipline(AC) anyone for their sin,
    you consume(AD) their wealth like a moth(AE)
    surely everyone is but a breath.(AF)

12 “Hear my prayer, Lord,
    listen to my cry for help;(AG)

I dwell with you as a foreigner,(AJ)
    a stranger,(AK) as all my ancestors were.(AL)
13 Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again

39 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.

I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue,

Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: that I may know how frail I am.

Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.

Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.

I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.

10 Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.

11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.

12 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.

13 O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more.

Ik was van plan zorgvuldig te leven
en ook in mijn spreken niet te zondigen.
Ik wilde mijzelf in bedwang houden,
zolang ongelovigen op mij letten.
Ik zweeg en sprak geen woord,
ik hield mijn mond en zei zelfs geen goede dingen.
Mijn zorgen en problemen werden alleen maar groter.
Het verteerde mij van binnen.
Als ik zuchtte, laaide alles weer op.
Toen sprak ik wel.
Here, laat mij toch zien hoe het met mij afloopt,
hoelang ik nog te leven heb.
Toon mij maar dat ik eigenlijk niets voorstel.
Want voor U is mijn leven niet langer dan enkele decimeters.
Mijn leven stelt in uw ogen niets voor.
Ieder mens is maar een ademtocht.
Een mens gaat voorbij als een schaduw,
als een zuchtje wind vliegt zijn leven weg.
Mensen verzamelen van alles,
maar beseffen niet dat anderen het na hun dood zullen nemen.
Maar wat heb ik te verwachten, Here?
Ik vertrouw geheel op U.
Vergeef mij al mijn zonden,
laten de dwazen niet over mij spotten.
10 Ik kan niet spreken, ik zeg niets.
Want U hebt alles voor mij gedaan.
11 Neem al dit lijden van mij af,
ik zal sterven als U Zich tegen mij verzet.
12 Als U iemand straft voor zijn zonden,
vergaat alles wat hem tot aanzien bracht,
net zoals een mot een kledingstuk vernielt.
Een mens is immers niets meer dan een ademtocht.
13 Here, luister toch naar mijn bidden
en hoor mijn smeken om hulp.
Blijf niet zwijgen als ik moet huilen,
want dan voel ik mij een vreemde bij U.
Ver van U zoals mijn voorouders.
14 Neem uw straf van mij af,
zodat ik weer blij door het leven kan gaan,
voor ik sterf en niet meer zal bestaan.
