He Will Not Forsake His Saints

[a] Of David.

37 (A)Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
    be not (B)envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon (C)fade like (D)the grass
    and wither (E)like the green herb.

(F)Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    (G)dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.[b]
(H)Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will (I)give you the desires of your heart.

(J)Commit your way to the Lord;
    (K)trust in him, and he will act.
(L)He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your justice as (M)the noonday.

(N)Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
    (O)fret not yourself over the one who (P)prospers in his way,
    over the man who carries out evil devices!

(Q)Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
    (R)Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
(S)For the evildoers shall be cut off,
    but those who wait for the Lord shall (T)inherit the land.

10 In (U)just a little while, the wicked will be no more;
    though you look carefully at (V)his place, he will not be there.
11 But (W)the meek shall inherit the land
    and delight themselves in (X)abundant peace.

12 The wicked (Y)plots against the righteous
    and (Z)gnashes his teeth at him,
13 but the Lord (AA)laughs at the wicked,
    for he sees that his (AB)day is coming.

14 The wicked draw the sword and (AC)bend their bows
    to bring down the poor and needy,
    to slay those whose (AD)way is upright;
15 their sword shall enter their own heart,
    and their (AE)bows shall be broken.

16 (AF)Better is the little that the righteous has
    than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For (AG)the arms of the wicked shall be broken,
    but the Lord (AH)upholds the righteous.

18 The Lord (AI)knows the days of the blameless,
    and their (AJ)heritage will remain forever;
19 they are not put to shame in evil times;
    in (AK)the days of famine they have abundance.

20 But the wicked will perish;
    the enemies of the Lord are like (AL)the glory of the pastures;
    they vanish—like (AM)smoke they vanish away.

21 The wicked borrows but does not pay back,
    but the righteous (AN)is generous and gives;
22 for those blessed by the Lord[c] shall (AO)inherit the land,
    but those cursed by him (AP)shall be cut off.

23 The (AQ)steps of a man are (AR)established by the Lord,
    when he delights in his way;
24 (AS)though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong,
    for the Lord (AT)upholds his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old,
    yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
    or his children (AU)begging for bread.
26 He is ever (AV)lending generously,
    and his children become a blessing.

27 (AW)Turn away from evil and do good;
    so shall you (AX)dwell forever.
28 For the Lord (AY)loves justice;
    he will not forsake his (AZ)saints.
They are preserved forever,
    but the children of the wicked shall be (BA)cut off.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land
    and (BB)dwell upon it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
    and his tongue speaks justice.
31 (BC)The law of his God is in his heart;
    his (BD)steps do not slip.

32 The wicked (BE)watches for the righteous
    and seeks to put him to death.
33 The Lord will not (BF)abandon him to his power
    or let him (BG)be condemned when he is brought to trial.

34 (BH)Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
    and he will exalt you to inherit the land;
    you will look on (BI)when the wicked are cut off.

35 (BJ)I have seen a wicked, ruthless man,
    spreading himself like (BK)a green laurel tree.[d]
36 But he passed away,[e] and behold, (BL)he was no more;
    though I sought him, he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless and behold the upright,
    for there is a future for the man of (BM)peace.
38 But (BN)transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;
    the future of the wicked (BO)shall be cut off.

39 (BP)The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    he is their stronghold in (BQ)the time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and (BR)delivers them;
    (BS)he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
    because they (BT)take refuge in him.

The Lord's Chosen Place of Worship

12 (A)“These are the statutes and rules that you shall be careful to do in the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess, (B)all the days that you live on the earth. (C)You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, (D)on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces (E)their pillars and burn their (F)Asherim with fire. You shall chop down the carved images of their gods and (G)destroy their name out of that place. (H)You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way. But you shall seek (I)the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation[a] there. There you shall go, and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, (J)your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings, and the (K)firstborn of your herd and of your flock. And (L)there you shall eat before the Lord your God, and (M)you shall rejoice, you and your households, in all that you undertake, in which the Lord your God has blessed you.

“You shall not do according to all that we are doing here today, (N)everyone doing whatever is right in his own eyes, for you have not as yet come to (O)the rest and to the inheritance that the Lord your God is giving you. 10 But when (P)you go over the Jordan and live in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to inherit, (Q)and when he gives you rest from all your enemies around, so that you live in safety, 11 then to (R)the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name dwell there, there you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, (S)your tithes and the contribution that you present, and all your finest vow offerings that you vow to the Lord. 12 And (T)you shall rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your sons and your daughters, your male servants and your female servants, and the Levite that is within your towns, since (U)he has no portion or inheritance with you. 13 (V)Take care that you do not offer your burnt offerings at any place that you see, 14 but at (W)the place that the Lord will choose in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I am commanding you.

15 “However, you may slaughter and eat meat within any of your towns, as much as you desire, (X)according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you. (Y)The unclean and the clean may eat of it, as of the gazelle and as of the deer. 16 (Z)Only you shall not eat the blood; you shall pour it out on the earth like water. 17 You may not eat within your towns (AA)the tithe of your grain or of your wine or of your oil, or the firstborn of your herd or of your flock, or any of your vow offerings that you vow, or your freewill offerings or the contribution that you present, 18 but (AB)you shall eat them before the Lord your God in (AC)the place that the Lord your God will choose, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, and the Levite who is within your towns. And (AD)you shall rejoice before the Lord your God in all that you undertake. 19 (AE)Take care that you do not neglect the Levite as long as you live in your land.

20 “When the Lord your God (AF)enlarges your territory, (AG)as he has promised you, and you say, ‘I will eat meat,’ because you crave meat, you may eat meat whenever you desire. 21 If (AH)the place that the Lord your God will choose to put his name there is too far from you, (AI)then you may kill any of your herd or your flock, which the Lord has given you, as I have commanded you, and you may eat within your towns whenever you desire. 22 Just (AJ)as the gazelle or the deer is eaten, so you may eat of it. (AK)The unclean and the clean alike may eat of it. 23 (AL)Only be sure that you do not eat the blood, (AM)for the blood is the life, and you shall not eat the life with the flesh. 24 You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the earth like water. 25 You shall not eat it, (AN)that all may go well with you and with your children after you, (AO)when you do what is right in the sight of the Lord. 26 But the (AP)holy things that are due from you, and (AQ)your vow offerings, you shall take, and you shall go to (AR)the place that the Lord will choose, 27 and (AS)offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God. The blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the Lord your God, but the flesh you may eat. 28 Be careful to obey all these words that I command you, (AT)that it may go well with you and with your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

Warning Against Idolatry

29 “When (AU)the Lord your God cuts off before you the nations whom you go in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, 30 take care (AV)that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do the same.’ 31 (AW)You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way, for every (AX)abominable thing that the Lord hates they have done for their gods, for (AY)they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.

32 [b] “Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. (AZ)You shall not add to it or take from it.

I and the Father Are One

22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, (A)in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are (B)the Christ, (C)tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (D)The works that I do (E)in my Father's name bear witness about me, 26 but (F)you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 (G)My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 (H)I give them eternal life, and (I)they will never perish, and (J)no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, (K)who has given them to me,[a] (L)is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of (M)the Father's hand. 30 (N)I and the Father are one.”

31 (O)The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but (P)for blasphemy, because you, being a man, (Q)make yourself God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in (R)your Law, (S)‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be (T)broken— 36 do you say of him whom (U)the Father consecrated and (V)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because (W)I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 (X)If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, (Y)even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that (Z)the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” 39 (AA)Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place (AB)where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained. 41 And many came to him. And they said, “John did no sign, but (AC)everything that John said about this man was true.” 42 And (AD)many believed in him there.
