A Psalm of Complaint and of Praise.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

31 (A)In You, O Lord, I have taken refuge;
Let me never (B)be ashamed;
(C)In Your righteousness deliver me.
(D)Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly;
Be to me a (E)rock of [a]strength,
A stronghold to save me.
For You are my [b]rock and (F)my fortress;
For (G)Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me.
You will (H)pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me,
For You are my (I)strength.
(J)Into Your hand I commit my spirit;
You have (K)ransomed me, O Lord, (L)God of [c]truth.

I hate those who (M)regard [d]vain idols,
But I (N)trust in the Lord.
I will (O)rejoice and be glad in Your lovingkindness,
Because You have (P)seen my affliction;
You have known the troubles of my soul,
And You have not (Q)given me over into the hand of the enemy;
You have set my feet in a large place.

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for (R)I am in distress;
My (S)eye is wasted away from grief, (T)my soul and my body also.
10 For my life is spent with (U)sorrow
And my years with sighing;
My (V)strength has failed because of my iniquity,
And (W)my [e]body has wasted away.
11 Because of all my adversaries, I have become a (X)reproach,
Especially to my (Y)neighbors,
And an object of dread to my acquaintances;
Those who see me in the street flee from me.
12 I am (Z)forgotten as a dead man, out of mind;
I am like a broken vessel.
13 For I have heard the [f](AA)slander of many,
(AB)Terror is on every side;
While they (AC)took counsel together against me,
They (AD)schemed to take away my life.

14 But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord,
I say, “(AE)You are my God.”
15 My (AF)times are in Your hand;
(AG)Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me.
16 Make Your (AH)face to shine upon Your servant;
(AI)Save me in Your lovingkindness.
17 Let me not be (AJ)put to shame, O Lord, for I call upon You;
Let the (AK)wicked be put to shame, let them (AL)be silent in [g]Sheol.
18 Let the (AM)lying lips be mute,
Which (AN)speak arrogantly against the righteous
With pride and contempt.

19 How great is Your (AO)goodness,
Which You have stored up for those who fear You,
Which You have wrought for those who (AP)take refuge in You,
(AQ)Before the sons of men!
20 You hide them in the (AR)secret place of Your presence from the (AS)conspiracies of man;
You keep them secretly in a [h]shelter from the (AT)strife of tongues.
21 (AU)Blessed be the Lord,
For He has made (AV)marvelous His lovingkindness to me in a besieged (AW)city.
22 As for me, (AX)I said in my alarm,
“I am (AY)cut off from before Your eyes”;
Nevertheless You (AZ)heard the voice of my supplications
When I cried to You.

23 O love the Lord, all you (BA)His godly ones!
The Lord (BB)preserves the faithful
And fully (BC)recompenses the proud doer.
24 (BD)Be strong and let your heart take courage,
All you who [i]hope in the Lord.

Blessedness of Forgiveness and of Trust in God.

A Psalm of David. A [j]Maskil.

32 (BE)How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered!
How blessed is the man to whom the Lord (BF)does not impute iniquity,
And in whose spirit there is (BG)no deceit!

When (BH)I kept silent about my sin, (BI)my [k]body wasted away
Through my [l](BJ)groaning all day long.
For day and night (BK)Your hand was heavy upon me;
My [m](BL)vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. [n]Selah.
I (BM)acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I (BN)did not hide;
I said, “(BO)I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”;
And You (BP)forgave the [o]guilt of my sin. Selah.
Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You [p](BQ)in a time when You may be found;
Surely (BR)in a flood of great waters they will not reach him.
You are (BS)my hiding place; You (BT)preserve me from trouble;
You surround me with [q](BU)songs of deliverance. Selah.

I will (BV)instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go;
I will counsel you (BW)with My eye upon you.
Do not be (BX)as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding,
Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check,
Otherwise they will not come near to you.
10 Many are the (BY)sorrows of the wicked,
But (BZ)he who trusts in the Lord, lovingkindness shall surround him.
11 Be (CA)glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones;
And shout for joy, all you who are (CB)upright in heart.

Praise to the Creator and Preserver.

33 (CC)Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones;
Praise is (CD)becoming to the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the (CE)lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a (CF)harp of ten strings.
Sing to Him a (CG)new song;
Play skillfully with (CH)a shout of joy.
For the word of the Lord (CI)is upright,
And all His work is done (CJ)in faithfulness.
He (CK)loves righteousness and justice;
The (CL)earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.

By the (CM)word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And (CN)by the breath of His mouth (CO)all their host.
He gathers the (CP)waters of the sea together [r]as a heap;
He lays up the deeps in storehouses.
Let (CQ)all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world (CR)stand in awe of Him.
For (CS)He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it [s]stood fast.
10 The Lord (CT)nullifies the counsel of the nations;
He frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 The (CU)counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The (CV)plans of His heart from generation to generation.
12 Blessed is the (CW)nation whose God is the Lord,
The people whom He has (CX)chosen for His own inheritance.

13 The Lord (CY)looks from heaven;
He (CZ)sees all the sons of men;
14 From (DA)His dwelling place He looks out
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 He who (DB)fashions [t]the hearts of them all,
He who (DC)understands all their works.
16 (DD)The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not delivered by great strength.
17 A (DE)horse is a false hope for victory;
Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.

18 Behold, (DF)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who [u](DG)hope for His lovingkindness,
19 To (DH)deliver their soul from death
And to keep them alive (DI)in famine.
20 Our soul (DJ)waits for the Lord;
He is our (DK)help and our shield.
21 For our (DL)heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
22 Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us,
According as we have [v]hoped in You.

The Lord, a Provider and Deliverer.

A Psalm of David when he [w]feigned madness before [x]Abimelech, who drove him away and he departed.

34 I will (DM)bless the Lord at all times;
His (DN)praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul will (DO)make its boast in the Lord;
The (DP)humble will hear it and rejoice.
O (DQ)magnify the Lord with me,
And let us (DR)exalt His name together.

I (DS)sought the Lord, and He answered me,
And (DT)delivered me from all my fears.
They (DU)looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces will (DV)never be ashamed.
This [y]poor man cried, and (DW)the Lord heard him
And saved him out of all his troubles.
The (DX)angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him,
And rescues them.

O (DY)taste and see that the Lord is good;
How (DZ)blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
O fear the Lord, you (EA)His saints;
For to those who fear Him there is (EB)no want.
10 The young lions do lack and suffer hunger;
But they who seek the Lord shall (EC)not be in want of any good thing.
11 (ED)Come, you children, listen to me;
(EE)I will teach you (EF)the fear of the Lord.
12 (EG)Who is the man who desires life
And loves length of days that he may (EH)see good?
13 Keep (EI)your tongue from evil
And your lips from speaking (EJ)deceit.
14 (EK)Depart from evil and do good;
Seek peace and (EL)pursue it.

15 The (EM)eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
And His ears are open to their cry.
16 The (EN)face of the Lord is against evildoers,
To (EO)cut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 The righteous (EP)cry, and the Lord hears
And delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord (EQ)is near to the (ER)brokenhearted
And saves those who are [z](ES)crushed in spirit.

19 (ET)Many are the (EU)afflictions of the righteous,
But the Lord (EV)delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones,
(EW)Not one of them is broken.
21 (EX)Evil shall slay the wicked,
And those who hate the righteous will be [aa]condemned.
22 The Lord (EY)redeems the soul of His servants,
And none of those who (EZ)take refuge in Him will be [ab]condemned.
