Psalm 28

The Lord Is My Strength and My Shield

Of David.

28 To you, O Lord, I call;
    ^(A)my rock, be not deaf to me,
lest, if you ^(B)be silent to me,
    I become like those who ^(C)go down to the pit.
²^(D)Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy,
    when I cry to you for help,
when I ^(E)lift up my hands
    ^(F)toward your most holy sanctuary.^[a]

³Do not ^(G)drag me off with the wicked,
    with the workers of evil,
^(H)who speak peace with their neighbors
    while evil is in their hearts.
⁴^(I)Give to them according to their work
    and according to the evil of their deeds;
give to them according to the work of their hands;
    ^(J)render them their due reward.
⁵Because they ^(K)do not regard the works of the Lord
    or the work of his hands,
he will tear them down and build them up no more.

⁶Blessed be the Lord!
    For he has ^(L)heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
⁷The Lord is my strength and ^(M)my shield;
    in him my heart ^(N)trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
    and with my ^(O)song I give thanks to him.

⁸The Lord is the strength of his people;^[b]
he is ^(P)the saving refuge of his anointed.
⁹Oh, save your people and bless ^(Q)your heritage!
^(R)Be their shepherd and ^(S)carry them forever.

¹⁰“Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
    and declare it in the coastlands far away;
say, ‘He who scattered Israel will ^(A)gather him,
    and will keep him ^(B)as a shepherd keeps his flock.’
¹¹^(C)For the Lord has ransomed Jacob
    and has redeemed him from ^(D)hands too strong for him.
¹²They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,
    ^(E)and they shall be radiant ^(F)over the goodness of the Lord,
^(G)over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
    and over the young of the flock and the herd;
^(H)their life shall be like a watered garden,
    ^(I)and they shall languish no more.
¹³^(J)Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance,
    and the young men and the old shall be merry.
^(K)I will turn their mourning into joy;
    I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
¹⁴^(L)I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance,
    and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness,
declares the Lord.”

The Authority of the Son

¹⁹So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(A)the Son ^(B)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father^[a] does, that the Son does likewise. ²⁰For ^(C)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And ^(D)greater works than these will he show him, so that ^(E)you may marvel. ²¹For as the Father ^(F)raises the dead and ^(G)gives them life, so ^(H)also the Son gives life ^(I)to whom he will. ²²^(J)For the Father judges no one, but ^(K)has given all judgment to the Son, ²³that all may honor the Son, just as they ^(L)honor the Father. ^(M)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. ²⁴Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(N)whoever hears my word and ^(O)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He ^(P)does not come into judgment, but ^(Q)has passed from death to life.

²⁵“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(R)an hour is coming, and is now here, when ^(S)the dead will hear ^(T)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear ^(U)will live. ²⁶^(V)For as the Father has life in himself, ^(W)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. ²⁷And he ^(X)has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. ²⁸Do not marvel at this, for ^(Y)an hour is coming when ^(Z)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice ²⁹and come out, ^(AA)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

³⁰^(AB)“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and ^(AC)my judgment is just, because ^(AD)I seek not my own will ^(AE)but the will of him who sent me. ³¹^(AF)If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. ³²There is ^(AG)another who bears witness about me, and ^(AH)I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. ³³^(AI)You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. ³⁴Not that ^(AJ)the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. ³⁵He was a burning and ^(AK)shining lamp, and ^(AL)you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. ³⁶But ^(AM)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For ^(AN)the works that the Father has given me ^(AO)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, ^(AP)bear witness about me that ^(AQ)the Father has sent me. ³⁷And the Father who sent me ^(AR)has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, ^(AS)his form you have never seen, ³⁸and ^(AT)you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. ³⁹^(AU)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and ^(AV)it is they that bear witness about me, ⁴⁰yet ^(AW)you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
