Psalm 21

New International Version

Psalm 21^[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

¹The king rejoices in your strength, Lord.^(A)
How great is his joy in the victories you give!^(B)

²You have granted him his heart’s desire^(C)
    and have not withheld the request of his lips.^[b]
³You came to greet him with rich blessings
    and placed a crown of pure gold^(D) on his head.^(E)
⁴He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
    length of days, for ever and ever.^(F)
⁵Through the victories^(G) you gave, his glory is great;
    you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.^(H)
⁶Surely you have granted him unending blessings
    and made him glad with the joy^(I) of your presence.^(J)
⁷For the king trusts in the Lord;^(K)
    through the unfailing love^(L) of the Most High^(M)
    he will not be shaken.^(N)

⁸Your hand will lay hold^(O) on all your enemies;
    your right hand will seize your foes.
⁹When you appear for battle,
    you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
    and his fire will consume them.^(P)
¹⁰You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
    their posterity from mankind.^(Q)
¹¹Though they plot evil^(R) against you
    and devise wicked schemes,^(S) they cannot succeed.
¹²You will make them turn their backs^(T)
    when you aim at them with drawn bow.

¹³Be exalted^(U) in your strength, Lord;^(V)
we will sing and praise your might.

Psalm 147:13-20

New International Version

¹³He strengthens the bars of your gates^(A)
and blesses your people^(B) within you.
¹⁴He grants peace^(C) to your borders
and satisfies you^(D) with the finest of wheat.^(E)

¹⁵He sends his command^(F) to the earth;
    his word runs^(G) swiftly.
¹⁶He spreads the snow^(H) like wool
    and scatters the frost^(I) like ashes.
¹⁷He hurls down his hail^(J) like pebbles.
    Who can withstand his icy blast?
¹⁸He sends his word^(K) and melts them;
    he stirs up his breezes,^(L) and the waters flow.

¹⁹He has revealed his word^(M) to Jacob,^(N)
his laws and decrees^(O) to Israel.
²⁰He has done this for no other nation;^(P)
they do not know^(Q) his laws.^[a]

Moses and the Glory of the Lord

¹²Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’^(A) but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name^(B) and you have found favor^(C) with me.’ ¹³If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways^(D) so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”^(E)

¹⁴The Lord replied, “My Presence^(F) will go with you, and I will give you rest.”^(G)

¹⁵Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence^(H) does not go with us, do not send us up from here. ¹⁶How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us?^(I) What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”^(J)

¹⁷And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked,^(K) because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”^(L)

¹⁸Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”^(M)

¹⁹And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass^(N) in front of you, and I will proclaim my name,^(O) the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.^(P) ²⁰But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see^(Q) me and live.”

²¹Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. ²²When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock^(R) and cover you with my hand^(S) until I have passed by. ²³Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

2 My dear children,^(A) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate^(B) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. ²He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,^(C) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.^(D)

Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers

³We know^(E) that we have come to know him^(F) if we keep his commands.^(G) ⁴Whoever says, “I know him,”^(H) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.^(I) ⁵But if anyone obeys his word,^(J) love for God^[a] is truly made complete in them.^(K) This is how we know^(L) we are in him: ⁶Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.^(M)

⁷Dear friends,^(N) I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.^(O) This old command is the message you have heard. ⁸Yet I am writing you a new command;^(P) its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing^(Q) and the true light^(R) is already shining.^(S)

⁹Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister^[b]^(T) is still in the darkness.^(U) ¹⁰Anyone who loves their brother and sister^[c] lives in the light,^(V) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.^(W) ¹¹But anyone who hates a brother or sister^(X) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.^(Y) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.^(Z)
