Psalm 141

Give Ear to My Voice

A Psalm of David.

141 O Lord, I call upon you; ^(A)hasten to me!
Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
²Let ^(B)my prayer be counted as incense before you,
and ^(C)the lifting up of my hands as ^(D)the evening sacrifice!

³^(E)Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
    ^(F)keep watch over the door of my lips!
⁴^(G)Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
    to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who ^(H)work iniquity,
    and ^(I)let me not eat of their delicacies!

⁵^(J)Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness;
    let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head;
    let my head not refuse it.
Yet ^(K)my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.
⁶When their judges are ^(L)thrown over the cliff,^[a]
    then they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant.
⁷As when one plows and breaks up the earth,
    so shall our bones ^(M)be scattered at the mouth of Sheol.^[b]

⁸But ^(N)my eyes are toward you, O God, my Lord;
    ^(O)in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless!^[c]
⁹Keep me from ^(P)the trap that they have laid for me
    and from the snares of evildoers!
¹⁰Let the wicked ^(Q)fall into their own nets,
    while I pass by safely.

You Are My Refuge

A Maskil^[a] of David, when he was in ^(A)the cave. A Prayer.

142 With my voice I ^(B)cry out to the Lord;
with my voice I ^(C)plead for mercy to the Lord.
²I ^(D)pour out my complaint before him;
I tell my trouble before him.

³When my spirit ^(E)faints within me,
    you know my way!
In the path where I walk
    they have ^(F)hidden a trap for me.
⁴^(G)Look to the ^(H)right and see:
    ^(I)there is none who takes notice of me;
^(J)no refuge remains to me;
    no one cares for my soul.

⁵I cry to you, O Lord;
    I say, “You are my ^(K)refuge,
    my ^(L)portion in ^(M)the land of the living.”
⁶^(N)Attend to my cry,
    for ^(O)I am brought very low!
Deliver me from my persecutors,
    ^(P)for they are too strong for me!
⁷^(Q)Bring me out of prison,
    that I may give thanks to your name!
The righteous will surround me,
    for you will ^(R)deal bountifully with me.

The Coming Day of Bitter Mourning

8 ^(A)This is what the Lord God showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit. ²And he said, ^(B)“Amos, what do you see?” And I said, ^(C)“A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me,

^(D)“The end^[a] has come upon my people Israel;
I will never again pass by them.
³^(E)The songs of the temple^[b] ^(F)shall become wailings^[c] in that day,”
declares the Lord God.
^(G)“So many dead bodies!”
“They are thrown everywhere!”
^(H)“Silence!”

⁴Hear this, ^(I)you who trample on the needy
    and bring the poor of the land to an end,
⁵saying, “When will ^(J)the new moon be over,
    that we may sell grain?
And ^(K)the Sabbath,
    that we may offer wheat for sale,
that we may make ^(L)the ephah small and the shekel^[d] great
    and deal deceitfully with false balances,
⁶that we may buy the poor for ^(M)silver
    and the needy for a pair of sandals
    and sell the chaff of the wheat?”

⁷The Lord has sworn by ^(N)the pride of Jacob:
“Surely ^(O)I will never forget any of their deeds.
⁸^(P)Shall not the land tremble on this account,
and everyone mourn who dwells in it,
^(Q)and all of it rise like the Nile,
and be tossed about ^(R)and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?”

⁹“And on that day,” declares the Lord God,
    ^(S)“I will make the sun go down at noon
    and darken the earth in broad daylight.
¹⁰^(T)I will turn your feasts into mourning
    and all your songs into lamentation;
^(U)I will bring sackcloth on every waist
    ^(V)and baldness on every head;
^(W)I will make it like the mourning for an only son
    and the end of it like a bitter day.

¹¹“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,
    “when ^(X)I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
    ^(Y)but of hearing the words of the Lord.
¹²^(Z)They shall wander from sea to sea,
    and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,
    ^(AA)but they shall not find it.

¹³^(AB)“In that day the lovely virgins and the young men
    shall ^(AC)faint for thirst.
¹⁴Those who swear by ^(AD)the Guilt of Samaria,
    and say, ‘As your god lives, O Dan,’
and, ‘As ^(AE)the Way of ^(AF)Beersheba lives,’
    they shall fall, and never rise again.”

Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples

21 After this Jesus ^(A)revealed himself ^(B)again to the disciples by ^(C)the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. ²Simon Peter, ^(D)Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of ^(E)Cana in Galilee, ^(F)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. ³Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but ^(G)that night they caught nothing.

⁴Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples ^(H)did not know that it was Jesus. ⁵^(I)Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” ⁶^(J)He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. ⁷That disciple ^(K)whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, ^(L)he put on his outer garment, for he was ^(M)stripped for work, and ^(N)threw himself into the sea. ⁸The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards^[a] off.

⁹When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. ¹⁰Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” ¹¹So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. ¹²Jesus said to them, ^(O)“Come and ^(P)have breakfast.” Now ^(Q)none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. ¹³Jesus came and ^(R)took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. ¹⁴^(S)This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus and Peter

¹⁵When they had ^(T)finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ^(U)“Simon, ^(V)son of John, ^(W)do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed ^(X)my lambs.” ¹⁶He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, ^(Y)“Tend ^(Z)my sheep.” ¹⁷He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him ^(AA)the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, ^(AB)you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed ^(AC)my sheep. ¹⁸^(AD)Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, ^(AE)you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” ¹⁹(This he said to show ^(AF)by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, ^(AG)“Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

²⁰Peter turned and saw ^(AH)the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, ^(AI)the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” ²¹When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” ²²Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain ^(AJ)until ^(AK)I come, what is that to you? ^(AL)You follow me!” ²³So the saying spread abroad among ^(AM)the brothers^[b] that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

²⁴This is the disciple ^(AN)who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and ^(AO)we know ^(AP)that his testimony is true.

²⁵Now ^(AQ)there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that ^(AR)the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
