Psalm 13

Psalm 13^[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

¹How long,^(A) Lord? Will you forget me^(B) forever?
    How long will you hide your face^(C) from me?
²How long must I wrestle with my thoughts^(D)
    and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
    How long will my enemy triumph over me?^(E)

³Look on me^(F) and answer,^(G) Lord my God.
Give light to my eyes,^(H) or I will sleep in death,^(I)
⁴and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,^(J)”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.^(K)

⁵But I trust in your unfailing love;^(L)
my heart rejoices in your salvation.^(M)
⁶I will sing^(N) the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me.

    the nation that keeps faith.
³You will keep in perfect peace^(H)
    those whose minds are steadfast,
    because they trust^(I) in you.
⁴Trust^(J) in the Lord forever,^(K)
    for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock^(L) eternal.
⁵He humbles those who dwell on high,
    he lays the lofty city low;
he levels it to the ground^(M)
    and casts it down to the dust.^(N)
⁶Feet trample^(O) it down—
    the feet of the oppressed,^(P)
    the footsteps of the poor.^(Q)

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives^(A)

³⁹Jesus went out as usual^(B) to the Mount of Olives,^(C) and his disciples followed him. ⁴⁰On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”^(D) ⁴¹He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down^(E) and prayed, ⁴²“Father, if you are willing, take this cup^(F) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”^(G) ⁴³An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.^(H) ⁴⁴And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.^[a]

⁴⁵When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. ⁴⁶“Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”^(I)

³⁸Two rebels were crucified with him,^(A) one on his right and one on his left. ³⁹Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^(B) ⁴⁰and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^(C) save yourself!^(D) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”^(E) ⁴¹In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. ⁴²“He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!^(F) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe^(G) in him. ⁴³He trusts in God. Let God rescue him^(H) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ⁴⁴In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
