Herr, rette mich vor den Lügnern!
120 Ein Lied für Festbesucher, die nach Jerusalem hinaufziehen.[a]
In auswegloser Lage schrie ich zum Herrn,
und er half mir aus meiner Not.
2 Ich bat: »Herr, rette mich vor diesen Lügnern,
die die Wahrheit schamlos verdrehen!«
3 Ihr Betrüger, wisst ihr, womit Gott euch strafen wird
und wie er euch euer falsches Gerede heimzahlt?
4 Er, der mächtige Gott, wird euch mit seinen Pfeilen treffen,
und mit glühenden Kohlen wird er euch versengen!
5 Bei euch zu leben, ertrage ich kaum,
es geht zu wie bei den Heiden in Meschech und Kedar![b]
6 Viel zu lange wohne ich schon hier,
umgeben von Leuten, die den Frieden hassen.
7 Ich selbst bin zwar auf Frieden bedacht,
aber sobald ich auch nur den Mund aufmache,
fangen sie schon einen Streit an!

- 120,5 Wörtlich: Wehe mir, dass ich ein Fremder bin in Meschech, dass ich wohne bei den Zelten Kedars. – Meschech war das Volk der Moscher im Gebiet zwischen dem Schwarzen und dem Kaspischen Meer (vgl. 1. Mose 10,2), Kedar war ein räuberischer Nomadenstamm in der syrisch-arabischen Wüste (vgl. 1. Mose 25,13). Beide Völker wurden zu Sinnbildern für »Heiden und Barbaren«.

I called to the Lord for help,
and he answered me!
2 I said, “Lord, save me from liars,
from those who say things that are not true.”
3 Liars, do you know what the Lord has for you?
Do you know what you will get?
4 You will get a soldier’s sharp arrow
and hot coals to punish you.
5 How I hate living here among these people!
It’s like living in Meshech or in the tents of Kedar.[a]
6 I have lived too long
with those who hate peace.
7 I ask for peace,
but they want war.

5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!
