Psalm 107

Book Five

Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So

107 ^(A)Oh give thanks to the Lord, ^(B)for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever!
²Let ^(C)the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    whom he has ^(D)redeemed from trouble^[a]
³and ^(E)gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.

⁴Some ^(F)wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way ^(G)to a city to dwell in;
⁵hungry and thirsty,
    their soul ^(H)fainted within them.
⁶Then they ^(I)cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
⁷He led them by ^(J)a straight way
    till they reached ^(K)a city to dwell in.
⁸^(L)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
⁹For he ^(M)satisfies the longing soul,
    ^(N)and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

¹⁰^(O)Some sat in darkness and in ^(P)the shadow of death,
    prisoners in ^(Q)affliction and in irons,
¹¹for they ^(R)had rebelled against the words of God,
    and ^(S)spurned the counsel of the Most High.
¹²So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
    they fell down, ^(T)with none to help.
¹³^(U)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
¹⁴He brought them out of ^(V)darkness and the shadow of death,
    and ^(W)burst their bonds apart.
¹⁵^(X)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
¹⁶For he ^(Y)shatters the doors of bronze
    and cuts in two the bars of iron.

¹⁷Some were ^(Z)fools through their sinful ways,
    and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
¹⁸^(AA)they loathed any kind of food,
    and they ^(AB)drew near to ^(AC)the gates of death.
¹⁹^(AD)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
²⁰He ^(AE)sent out his word and ^(AF)healed them,
    and ^(AG)delivered them from their destruction.
²¹^(AH)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
²²And let them ^(AI)offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    and ^(AJ)tell of his deeds in ^(AK)songs of joy!

²³Some ^(AL)went down to the sea in ships,
    doing business on the great waters;
²⁴they saw the deeds of the Lord,
    his wondrous works in the deep.
²⁵For he ^(AM)commanded and ^(AN)raised the stormy wind,
    which lifted up the waves of the sea.
²⁶They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
    their courage ^(AO)melted away in their evil plight;
²⁷they reeled and ^(AP)staggered like drunken men
    and ^(AQ)were at their wits' end.^[b]
²⁸^(AR)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
²⁹He ^(AS)made the storm be still,
    and the waves of the sea were hushed.
³⁰Then they were glad that the waters^[c] were quiet,
    and he brought them to their desired haven.
³¹^(AT)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
³²Let them ^(AU)extol him in ^(AV)the congregation of the people,
    and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

³³He ^(AW)turns rivers into a desert,
    springs of water into thirsty ground,
³⁴^(AX)a fruitful land into a salty waste,
    because of the evil of its inhabitants.
³⁵He ^(AY)turns a desert into pools of water,
    ^(AZ)a parched land into springs of water.
³⁶And there he lets the hungry dwell,
    and they establish ^(BA)a city to live in;
³⁷they sow fields and plant vineyards
    and get a fruitful yield.
³⁸^(BB)By his blessing they multiply greatly,
    and he does not let their livestock diminish.

³⁹When they are diminished and brought low
    through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
⁴⁰^(BC)he pours contempt on princes
    and ^(BD)makes them wander ^(BE)in trackless wastes;
⁴¹but ^(BF)he raises up the needy out of affliction
    and ^(BG)makes their families like flocks.
⁴²^(BH)The upright see it and are glad,
    and ^(BI)all wickedness shuts its mouth.

⁴³^(BJ)Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

With God We Shall Do Valiantly

A Song. A Psalm of David.

108 ^(A)My heart is steadfast, O God!
    I will sing and make melody with all my being!^[a]
²Awake, O harp and lyre!
    I will awake the dawn!
³I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
    I will sing praises to you among the nations.
⁴For your steadfast love is great ^(B)above the heavens;
    your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

⁵Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!
⁶^(C)That your beloved ones may be delivered,
give salvation by your right hand and answer me!

⁷God has promised in his holiness:^[b]
    “With exultation I will divide up Shechem
    and portion out the Valley of Succoth.
⁸Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim is my helmet,
    Judah my scepter.
⁹Moab is my washbasin;
    upon Edom I cast my shoe;
    ^(D)over Philistia I shout in triumph.”

¹⁰Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
¹¹Have you not rejected us, O God?
    You do not go out, O God, with our armies.
¹²Oh grant us help against the foe,
    for vain is the salvation of man!
¹³With God we shall do valiantly;
    it is he who will tread down our foes.

Genesis 35:1-20

God Blesses and Renames Jacob

35 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to ^(A)Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you ^(B)when you fled from your brother Esau.” ²So Jacob said to his ^(C)household and to all who were with him, “Put away ^(D)the foreign gods that are among you and ^(E)purify yourselves and change your garments. ³Then let us arise and go up to Bethel, so that I may make there an altar to the God ^(F)who answers me in the day of my distress and ^(G)has been with me wherever I have gone.” ⁴So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears. Jacob hid them under ^(H)the terebinth tree that was near Shechem.

⁵And as they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were around them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. ⁶And Jacob came to ^(I)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him, ⁷and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel,^[a] because ^(J)there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother. ⁸And ^(K)Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried under an oak below Bethel. So he called its name Allon-bacuth.^[b]

⁹God appeared^[c] to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. ¹⁰And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; ^(L)no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but ^(M)Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel. ¹¹And God said to him, ^(N)“I am God Almighty:^[d] be ^(O)fruitful and multiply. ^(P)A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.^[e] ¹²^(Q)The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your offspring after you.” ¹³Then God ^(R)went up from him in the place where he had spoken with him. ¹⁴And Jacob ^(S)set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. ¹⁵So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him ^(T)Bethel.

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac

¹⁶Then they journeyed from Bethel. When they were still some distance^[f] from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and she had hard labor. ¹⁷And when her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for ^(U)you have another son.” ¹⁸And as her soul was departing (for she was dying), she called his name Ben-oni;^[g] ^(V)but his father called him Benjamin.^[h] ¹⁹So ^(W)Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to ^(X)Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem), ²⁰and Jacob set up a pillar over her tomb. It is ^(Y)the pillar of Rachel's tomb, which is there to this day.

1 John 3:11-18

Love One Another

¹¹For ^(A)this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, ^(B)that we should love one another. ¹²We should not be like ^(C)Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? ^(D)Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. ¹³Do not be surprised, brothers,^[a] ^(E)that the world hates you. ¹⁴We know that ^(F)we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. ¹⁵^(G)Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that ^(H)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

¹⁶By this we know love, that ^(I)he laid down his life for us, and ^(J)we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. ¹⁷But ^(K)if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet ^(L)closes his heart against him, ^(M)how does God's love abide in him? ¹⁸Little children, let us not ^(N)love in word or talk but in deed and ^(O)in truth.

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of ^(A)Mary and her sister Martha. ²^(B)It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. ³So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, ^(C)he whom you love is ill.” ⁴But when Jesus heard it he said, ^(D)“This illness does not lead to death. It is for ^(E)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

⁵Now ^(F)Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. ⁶So, when he heard that Lazarus^[a] was ill, ^(G)he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. ⁷Then after this he said to the disciples, ^(H)“Let us go to Judea again.” ⁸The disciples said to him, ^(I)“Rabbi, ^(J)the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” ⁹Jesus answered, ^(K)“Are there not twelve hours in the day? ^(L)If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. ¹⁰But ^(M)if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not ^(N)in him.” ¹¹After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus ^(O)has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” ¹²The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” ¹³Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. ¹⁴Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, ¹⁵and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” ¹⁶^(P)So Thomas, called the Twin,^[b] said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, ^(Q)that we may die with him.”
