19 They (A)made a calf in Horeb
    and worshiped a metal image.
20 They (B)exchanged the glory of God[a]
for the image of an ox that eats grass.
21 They (C)forgot God, their Savior,
who had done great things in Egypt,
22 wondrous works in (D)the land of Ham,
and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
23 Therefore (E)he said he would destroy them—
had not Moses, his (F)chosen one,
(G)stood in the breach before him,
to turn away his wrath from destroying them.

24 Then they (H)despised (I)the pleasant land,
having (J)no faith in his promise.
25 They (K)murmured in their tents,
and did not obey the voice of the Lord.
26 Therefore he (L)raised his hand and swore to them
that he would make them fall in the wilderness,
27 and would make their offspring fall among the nations,
    (M)scattering them among the lands.

28 Then they (N)yoked themselves to the (O)Baal of Peor,
    and ate sacrifices offered to (P)the dead;
29 they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,
and a plague broke out among them.
30 Then (Q)Phinehas stood up and intervened,
    and the plague was stayed.
31 And that was (R)counted to him as righteousness
    from generation to generation forever.

32 They (S)angered him at the waters of Meribah,
and it went ill with Moses on their account,
33 for they (T)made his spirit bitter,[b]
and he (U)spoke rashly with his lips.

34 They did not (V)destroy the peoples,
    (W)as the Lord commanded them,
35 but they (X)mixed with the nations
and learned to do as they did.
36 They served their idols,
which became (Y)a snare to them.
37 They (Z)sacrificed their sons
    and their daughters to (AA)the demons;
38 they poured out innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was (AB)polluted with blood.
39 Thus they (AC)became unclean by their acts,
and (AD)played the whore in their deeds.

40 Then (AE)the anger of the Lord was kindled against (AF)his people,
    and he abhorred his (AG)heritage;
41 he (AH)gave them into the hand of the nations,
so that those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies (AI)oppressed them,
and they were brought into subjection under their power.
43 (AJ)Many times he delivered them,
but they were rebellious in their (AK)purposes
and were (AL)brought low through their iniquity.

44 Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
    when he (AM)heard their cry.
45 For their sake he (AN)remembered his covenant,
and (AO)relented according to (AP)the abundance of his steadfast love.
46 He caused them to be (AQ)pitied
by all those who held them captive.

47 (AR)Save us, O Lord our God,
and (AS)gather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
    and glory in your praise.

48 (AT)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting!
(AU)And let all the people say, “Amen!”
    (AV)Praise the Lord!

The Obedience of the Rechabites

35 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of (A)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: “Go to the house of the (B)Rechabites and speak with them and bring them to the house of the Lord, into one of (C)the chambers; then offer them wine to drink.” So I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, son of Habazziniah and his brothers and all his sons and the whole house of the Rechabites. I brought them to the house of the Lord into (D)the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, (E)the man of God, which was near (F)the chamber of the officials, above (G)the chamber of (H)Maaseiah the son of Shallum, (I)keeper of the threshold. Then I set before the Rechabites pitchers full of wine, and cups, and I said to them, “Drink wine.” But they answered, “We will drink no wine, for (J)Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, ‘You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons forever. You shall not build a house; you shall not sow seed; you shall not plant or have a vineyard; but you shall live in tents all your days, (K)that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.’ We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he commanded us, to drink no wine all our days, ourselves, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, and not to build houses to dwell in. We have no vineyard or field or seed, 10 but we have lived in tents and have obeyed and done all that Jonadab our father commanded us. 11 But (L)when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against the land, we said, ‘Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of (M)the army of the Chaldeans and (N)the army of the Syrians.’ (O)So we are living in Jerusalem.”

12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Go and say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, (P)Will you not receive instruction and listen to my words? declares the Lord. 14 The command that Jonadab the son of Rechab gave to his sons, to drink no wine, has been kept, and they drink none to this day, for they have obeyed their father's command. I have spoken to you (Q)persistently, but you have not listened to me. 15 I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, sending them (R)persistently, saying, (S)‘Turn now every one of you from his evil way, and amend your deeds, and (T)do not go after other gods to serve them, and then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to you and your fathers.’ (U)But you did not incline your ear or listen to me. 16 The sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have kept the command that their father gave them, but this people has not obeyed me. 17 Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, (V)because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, (W)I have called to them and they have not answered.”

18 But to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done all that he commanded you, 19 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab the son of Rechab shall never lack a man (X)to stand before me.”

Triumph in Christ

12 When (A)I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, even though (B)a door was opened for me in the Lord, 13 my spirit (C)was not at rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedonia.

14 But (D)thanks be to God, who in Christ always (E)leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads (F)the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among (G)those who are being saved and among (H)those who are perishing, 16 (I)to one a fragrance from death to death, (J)to the other a fragrance from life to life. (K)Who is sufficient for these things? 17 For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

Ministers of the New Covenant

(A)Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, (B)as some do, (C)letters of recommendation to you, or from you? (D)You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our[a] hearts, to be known and read by all. And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of (E)the living God, not on (F)tablets of stone but on (G)tablets of (H)human hearts.[b]

(I)Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. (J)Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but (K)our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be (L)ministers of (M)a new covenant, not of (N)the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but (O)the Spirit gives life.

Now if (P)the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory (Q)that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses' face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? For if there was glory in (R)the ministry of condemnation, (S)the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory. 10 Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory.

12 Since we have such a hope, (T)we are very bold, 13 not like Moses, (U)who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 14 But (V)their minds were (W)hardened. For to this day, (X)when they read (Y)the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16 But when (Z)one[c] turns to the Lord, (AA)the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord[d] is the Spirit, and where (AB)the Spirit of the Lord is, there is (AC)freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, (AD)beholding (AE)the glory of the Lord,[e] (AF)are being transformed into the same image (AG)from one degree of glory to another.[f] For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
