Book One
The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked
1 Blessed is the man[a]
who (A)walks not in (B)the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in (C)the way of sinners,
nor (D)sits in (E)the seat of (F)scoffers;
2 but his (G)delight is in the law[b] of the Lord,
and on his (H)law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like (I)a tree
planted by (J)streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its (K)leaf does not wither.
(L)In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
but are like (M)chaff that the wind drives away.

The Reign of the Lord's Anointed
2 (A)Why do (B)the nations rage[a]
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his (C)Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us (D)burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
4 He who (E)sits in the heavens (F)laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his (G)wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 “As for me, I have (H)set my King
on (I)Zion, my (J)holy hill.”
7 I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, (K)“You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and (L)the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall (M)break[b] them with (N)a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like (O)a potter's vessel.”

Save Me, O My God
A Psalm of David, (A)when he fled from Absalom his son.
3 O Lord, (B)how many are my foes!
Many are (C)rising against me;
2 many are saying of my soul,
(D)“There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah[a]
3 But you, O Lord, are (E)a shield (F)about me,
my glory, and (G)the lifter of my head.
4 I (H)cried aloud to the Lord,
and he (I)answered me from his (J)holy hill. Selah
5 I (K)lay down and slept;
I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
6 I (L)will not be afraid of many thousands of people
who have (M)set themselves against me all around.
7 (N)Arise, O Lord!
Save me, O my God!
For you (O)strike all my enemies on the cheek;
you (P)break the teeth of the wicked.
8 (Q)Salvation belongs to the Lord;
your blessing be on your people! Selah

4 (A)These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
5 When no (B)bush of the field[a] was yet in the land[b] and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man (C)to work the ground, 6 and a mist[c] was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of (D)dust from the ground and (E)breathed into his (F)nostrils the breath of life, and (G)the man became a living creature. 8 And the Lord God planted a (H)garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. (I)The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, (J)and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of (K)Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the (L)Tigris, which flows east of Assyria.[d] And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 The Lord God took the man (M)and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (N)you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat[e] of it you (O)shall surely die.”
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; (P)I will make him a helper fit for[f] him.” 19 (Q)Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed[g] every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and (R)brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam[h] there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a (S)deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made[i] into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
“This at last is (T)bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was (U)taken out of Man.”[j]
24 (V)Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

The Supremacy of God's Son
1 Long ago, at many times and (A)in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but (B)in these last days (C)he has spoken to us by (D)his Son, whom he appointed (E)the heir of all things, (F)through whom also he created (G)the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and (H)the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. (I)After making purification for sins, (J)he sat down (K)at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name (L)he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,
(M)“You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”?
Or again,
(N)“I will be to him a father,
and he shall be to me a son”?
6 And again, when he brings (O)the firstborn into the world, he says,
(P)“Let all God's angels worship him.”
7 Of the angels he says,
(Q)“He makes his angels winds,
and his ministers a flame of fire.”
8 But of the Son he says,
(R)“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, (S)has anointed you
with (T)the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”
10 And,
(U)“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
and the heavens are the work of your hands;
11 they will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment,
12 like a robe you will roll them up,
like a garment they will be changed.[a]
But you are (V)the same,
and your years will have no end.”
13 And to which of the angels has he ever said,
14 Are they not all ministering spirits (Y)sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to (Z)inherit salvation?
