Psalm 49

Misplaced Trust in Wealth

For the choir director. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

Hear this, all you peoples;
listen, all who inhabit the world,(A)
both low and high,
rich and poor together.(B)
My mouth speaks wisdom;
my heart’s meditation brings understanding.(C)
I turn my ear to a proverb;
I explain my riddle with a lyre.(D)

Why should I fear in times of trouble?
The iniquity of my foes surrounds me.(E)
They trust in their wealth
and boast of their abundant riches.(F)
Yet these cannot redeem a person[a]
or pay his ransom to God(G)
since the price of redeeming him is too costly,
one should forever stop trying[b](H)
so that he may live forever
and not see the Pit.(I)

10 For one can see that the wise die;
the foolish and stupid also pass away.(J)
Then they leave their wealth to others.(K)
11 Their graves are their permanent homes,[c]
their dwellings from generation to generation,
though they have named estates after themselves.(L)
12 But despite his assets,[d] mankind will not last;
he is like the animals that perish.(M)

13 This is the way of those who are arrogant,
and of their followers,
who approve of their words.[e](N)Selah
14 Like sheep they are headed for Sheol;
Death will shepherd them.
The upright will rule over them in the morning,(O)
and their form will waste away in Sheol,[f]
far from their lofty abode.(P)
15 But God will redeem me
from the power of Sheol,
for he will take me.(Q)Selah

16 Do not be afraid when a person gets rich,
when the wealth[g] of his house increases.(R)
17 For when he dies, he will take nothing at all;
his wealth will not follow him down.(S)
18 Though he blesses himself during his lifetime—
and you are acclaimed when you do well for yourself(T)
19 he will go to the generation of his ancestors;
they will never see the light.(U)
20 Mankind, with his assets
but without understanding,
is like the animals that perish.(V)

Psalm 49[a]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

Hear(A) this, all you peoples;(B)
    listen, all who live in this world,(C)
both low and high,(D)
    rich and poor alike:
My mouth will speak words of wisdom;(E)
    the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.(F)
I will turn my ear to a proverb;(G)
    with the harp(H) I will expound my riddle:(I)

Why should I fear(J) when evil days come,
    when wicked deceivers surround me—
those who trust in their wealth(K)
    and boast(L) of their great riches?(M)
No one can redeem the life of another
    or give to God a ransom for them—
the ransom(N) for a life is costly,
    no payment is ever enough—(O)
so that they should live on(P) forever
    and not see decay.(Q)
10 For all can see that the wise die,(R)
    that the foolish and the senseless(S) also perish,
    leaving their wealth(T) to others.(U)
11 Their tombs(V) will remain their houses[b] forever,
    their dwellings for endless generations,(W)
    though they had[c] named(X) lands after themselves.

12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure;(Y)
    they are like the beasts that perish.(Z)

13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,(AA)
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[d]
14 They are like sheep and are destined(AB) to die;(AC)
    death will be their shepherd
    (but the upright will prevail(AD) over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
    far from their princely mansions.
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;(AE)
    he will surely take me to himself.(AF)
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing(AG) with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.(AH)
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—(AI)
    and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them,(AJ)
    who will never again see the light(AK) of life.

20 People who have wealth but lack understanding(AL)
    are like the beasts that perish.(AM)

45 But they did not understand this statement;(B) it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it,(C) and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 An argument started among them about who was the greatest of them.(D) 47 But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts,[b](E) took a little child and had him stand next to him. 48 He told them, “Whoever welcomes[c] this little child in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes him who sent me.(F) For whoever is least among you—this one is great.”(G)

In His Name

49 John responded,(H) “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name,(I) and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us.”(J)

50 “Don’t stop him,” Jesus told him, “because whoever is not against you is for you.”[d](K)

The Journey to Jerusalem

51 When the days were coming to a close for him to be taken up,(L) he determined[e](M) to journey to Jerusalem.(N) 52 He sent messengers ahead of himself,(O) and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans(P) to make preparations for him. 53 But they did not welcome him, because he determined to journey to Jerusalem.(Q) 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” [f](R)

55 But he turned and rebuked them,[g] 56 and they went to another village.

God’s Selection Is Just

14 What should we say then?(A) Is there injustice with God?(B) Absolutely not!(C) 15 For he tells Moses, I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.[a](D) 16 So then, it does not depend on human will or effort(E) but on God who shows mercy.(F) 17 For the Scripture tells Pharaoh, I raised you up for this reason so that I may display my power in you and that my name may be proclaimed in the whole earth.[b](G) 18 So then, he has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy and he hardens whom he wants to harden.(H)

19 You will say to me,(I) therefore, “Why then does he still find fault?(J) For who resists his will?” (K) 20 On the contrary, who are you, a human being, to talk back to God?(L) Will what is formed say to the one who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?” (M) 21 Or has the potter no right over the clay,(N) to make from the same lump one piece of pottery for honor and another for dishonor? 22 And what if God, wanting to display his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much patience(O) objects of wrath prepared for destruction?(P) 23 And what if he did this to make known the riches of his glory(Q) on objects of mercy(R) that he prepared beforehand for glory(S) 24 on us, the ones he also called,(T) not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?(U) 25 As it[c] also says in Hosea,

I will call Not My People, My People,
and she who is Unloved, Beloved.[d](V)
26 And it will be in the place where they were told,
you are not my people,
there they will be called sons of the living God.[e](W)

27 But Isaiah cries out concerning Israel,

Though the number of Israelites
is like the sand of the sea,(X)
only the remnant will be saved;(Y)
28 since the Lord will execute his sentence
completely and decisively on the earth.[f][g] (Z)

29 And just as Isaiah predicted:

If the Lord of Armies had not left us offspring,(AA)
we would have become like Sodom,
and we would have been made like Gomorrah.[h](AB)

14 What then shall we say?(A) Is God unjust? Not at all!(B) 15 For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
    and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[a](C)

16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.(D) 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”[b](E) 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.(F)

19 One of you will say to me:(G) “Then why does God still blame us?(H) For who is able to resist his will?”(I) 20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God?(J) “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it,(K) ‘Why did you make me like this?’”[c](L) 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?(M)

22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience(N) the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction?(O) 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory(P) known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory(Q) 24 even us, whom he also called,(R) not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?(S) 25 As he says in Hosea:

“I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;
    and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,”[d](T)

26 and,

“In the very place where it was said to them,
    ‘You are not my people,’
    there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’”[e](U)

27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:

“Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea,(V)
    only the remnant will be saved.(W)
28 For the Lord will carry out
    his sentence on earth with speed and finality.”[f](X)

29 It is just as Isaiah said previously:

“Unless the Lord Almighty(Y)
    had left us descendants,
we would have become like Sodom,
    we would have been like Gomorrah.”[g](Z)
