Blessed Are the Forgiven

A Maskil[a] of David.

32 (A)Blessed is the one whose (B)transgression is forgiven,
    whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the Lord (C)counts no iniquity,
    and in whose spirit (D)there is no deceit.

For when I kept silent, my (E)bones wasted away
    through my (F)groaning all day long.
For day and night your (G)hand was heavy upon me;
    my strength was dried up[b] as by the heat of summer. Selah

I (H)acknowledged my sin to you,
    and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I (I)will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
    and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

Therefore let everyone who is (J)godly
    offer prayer to you at a time when you (K)may be found;
surely in the rush of (L)great waters,
    they shall not reach him.
You are a (M)hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from (N)trouble;
    you surround me with (O)shouts of deliverance. Selah

I will (P)instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will (Q)counsel you with my eye upon you.
(R)Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
    which must be curbed with (S)bit and bridle,
    or it will not stay near you.

10 (T)Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
    but steadfast love surrounds the one who (U)trusts in the Lord.
11 (V)Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,
    and (W)shout for joy, all you (X)upright in heart!

The Steadfast Love of the Lord

33 (Y)Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
    (Z)Praise befits the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the (AA)lyre;
    make melody to him with (AB)the harp of (AC)ten strings!
Sing to him (AD)a new song;
    play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

For the word of the Lord is upright,
    and all his work is done in (AE)faithfulness.
He (AF)loves righteousness and justice;
    (AG)the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

By (AH)the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
    and by (AI)the breath of his mouth all (AJ)their host.
He gathers the waters of the sea as (AK)a heap;
    he (AL)puts the deeps in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
    let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For (AM)he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded, and it stood firm.

10 The Lord (AN)brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
    he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 (AO)The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
    the plans of his heart to all generations.
12 (AP)Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people whom he has (AQ)chosen as his heritage!

13 The Lord (AR)looks down from heaven;
    he sees all the children of man;
14 from (AS)where he sits enthroned he (AT)looks out
    on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
    and observes all their deeds.
16 (AU)The king is not saved by his great army;
    a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 (AV)The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
    and by its great might it cannot rescue.

18 Behold, (AW)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
    (AX)on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may (AY)deliver their soul from death
    and keep them alive in (AZ)famine.

20 Our soul (BA)waits for the Lord;
    he is our (BB)help and (BC)our shield.
21 For our heart is (BD)glad in him,
    because we (BE)trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.

Taste and See That the Lord Is Good

[c] Of David, when he (BF)changed his behavior before (BG)Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.

34 I will bless the Lord (BH)at all times;
    his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul (BI)makes its boast in the Lord;
    let the humble hear and (BJ)be glad.
Oh, (BK)magnify the Lord with me,
    and let us exalt his name together!

I (BL)sought the Lord, and he answered me
    and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are (BM)radiant,
    and their faces shall never be ashamed.
(BN)This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
    and (BO)saved him out of all his troubles.
(BP)The angel of the Lord (BQ)encamps
    around those who fear him, and delivers them.

Oh, (BR)taste and see that (BS)the Lord is good!
    (BT)Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
    for those who fear him have no lack!
10 (BU)The young lions suffer want and hunger;
    but those who (BV)seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11 (BW)Come, O children, listen to me;
    (BX)I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 (BY)What man is there who desires life
    and loves many days, that he may (BZ)see good?
13 (CA)Keep your tongue from evil
    and your lips from (CB)speaking deceit.
14 (CC)Turn away from evil and do good;
    seek peace and (CD)pursue it.

15 (CE)The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
    (CF)and his ears toward their cry.
16 (CG)The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
    to (CH)cut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 (CI)When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
    and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to (CJ)the brokenhearted
    and saves (CK)the crushed in spirit.

19 (CL)Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
    (CM)but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones;
    (CN)not one of them is broken.
21 (CO)Affliction will slay the wicked,
    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord (CP)redeems the life of his servants;
    none of those who take refuge in him will be (CQ)condemned.

Great Is the Lord

Of David.

35 Contend, O Lord, with those who (CR)contend with me;
    (CS)fight against those who fight against me!
Take hold of (CT)shield and buckler
    and rise for my help!
Draw the spear and javelin[d]
    against my pursuers!
Say to my soul,
    “I am your salvation!”

(CU)Let them be (CV)put to shame and dishonor
    who seek after my life!
Let them be (CW)turned back and disappointed
    who devise evil against me!
Let them be like (CX)chaff before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord driving them away!
Let their way be dark and (CY)slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them!

For (CZ)without cause (DA)they hid their net for me;
    without cause they dug (DB)a pit for my life.[e]
Let (DC)destruction come upon him (DD)when he does not know it!
And let the net that he hid ensnare him;
    let him fall into it—to his destruction!

Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord,
    (DE)exulting in his salvation.
10 All my (DF)bones shall say,
    “O Lord, (DG)who is like you,
delivering the poor
    from him who is too strong for him,
    the poor and needy from him who robs him?”

11 (DH)Malicious[f] witnesses rise up;
    they ask me of things that I do not know.
12 (DI)They repay me evil for good;
    my soul is bereft.[g]
13 But I, (DJ)when they were sick—
    I (DK)wore sackcloth;
    I (DL)afflicted myself with fasting;
I prayed (DM)with head bowed[h] on my chest.
14     I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother;
as one who laments his mother,
    I (DN)bowed down in mourning.

15 But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered;
    they gathered together against me;
(DO)wretches whom I did not know
    tore at me without ceasing;
16 like profane mockers at a feast,[i]
    they (DP)gnash at me with their teeth.

17 How long, O Lord, will you (DQ)look on?
    Rescue me from their destruction,
    (DR)my precious life from the lions!
18 I will thank you in (DS)the great congregation;
    in the mighty throng I will praise you.

19 (DT)Let not those rejoice over me
    who are (DU)wrongfully my foes,
and let not those (DV)wink the eye
    who (DW)hate me (DX)without cause.
20 For they do not speak peace,
    but against those who are quiet in the land
    they devise words of deceit.
21 They (DY)open wide their mouths against me;
    they say, (DZ)“Aha, Aha!
    Our eyes have seen it!”

22 (EA)You have seen, O Lord; (EB)be not silent!
    O Lord, (EC)be not far from me!
23 Awake and (ED)rouse yourself for (EE)my vindication,
    for my cause, my God and my Lord!
24 (EF)Vindicate me, O Lord, my God,
    according to your righteousness,
    and (EG)let them not rejoice over me!
25 Let them not say in their hearts,
    (EH)“Aha, our heart's desire!”
Let them not say, (EI)“We have swallowed him up.”

26 Let them be (EJ)put to shame and disappointed altogether
    who rejoice at my calamity!
Let them be (EK)clothed with shame and dishonor
    who (EL)magnify themselves against me!

27 Let those who delight in my righteousness
    shout for joy and be glad
    (EM)and say evermore,
(EN)“Great is the Lord,
    who (EO)delights in the welfare of his servant!”
28 Then my (EP)tongue shall tell of your righteousness
    and of your praise all the day long.

How Precious Is Your Steadfast Love

To the choirmaster. Of David, the (EQ)servant of the Lord.

36 Transgression speaks to the wicked
    deep in his heart;[j]
(ER)there is no fear of God
    before his eyes.
(ES)For he flatters himself in his own eyes
    that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
The words of his mouth are (ET)trouble and deceit;
    (EU)he has ceased to act wisely and do good.
He (EV)plots (EW)trouble while on his bed;
    he sets himself in (EX)a way that is not good;
    (EY)he does not reject evil.

Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the clouds.
(EZ)Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
    (FA)your judgments are like the great deep;
    man and beast you (FB)save, O Lord.

(FC)How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
    The children of mankind take refuge (FD)in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on (FE)the abundance of your house,
    and you give them drink from (FF)the river of (FG)your delights.
For with you is (FH)the fountain of life;
    (FI)in your light do we see light.

10 Oh, continue your steadfast love to those who (FJ)know you,
    and your righteousness to (FK)the upright of heart!
11 Let not the foot of arrogance come upon me,
    nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 There (FL)the evildoers lie fallen;
    they are thrust down, (FM)unable to rise.

He Will Not Forsake His Saints

[k] Of David.

37 (FN)Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
    be not (FO)envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon (FP)fade like (FQ)the grass
    and wither (FR)like the green herb.

(FS)Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    (FT)dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.[l]
(FU)Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will (FV)give you the desires of your heart.

(FW)Commit your way to the Lord;
    (FX)trust in him, and he will act.
(FY)He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your justice as (FZ)the noonday.

(GA)Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
    (GB)fret not yourself over the one who (GC)prospers in his way,
    over the man who carries out evil devices!

(GD)Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
    (GE)Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
(GF)For the evildoers shall be cut off,
    but those who wait for the Lord shall (GG)inherit the land.

10 In (GH)just a little while, the wicked will be no more;
    though you look carefully at (GI)his place, he will not be there.
11 But (GJ)the meek shall inherit the land
    and delight themselves in (GK)abundant peace.

12 The wicked (GL)plots against the righteous
    and (GM)gnashes his teeth at him,
13 but the Lord (GN)laughs at the wicked,
    for he sees that his (GO)day is coming.

14 The wicked draw the sword and (GP)bend their bows
    to bring down the poor and needy,
    to slay those whose (GQ)way is upright;
15 their sword shall enter their own heart,
    and their (GR)bows shall be broken.

16 (GS)Better is the little that the righteous has
    than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For (GT)the arms of the wicked shall be broken,
    but the Lord (GU)upholds the righteous.

18 The Lord (GV)knows the days of the blameless,
    and their (GW)heritage will remain forever;
19 they are not put to shame in evil times;
    in (GX)the days of famine they have abundance.

20 But the wicked will perish;
    the enemies of the Lord are like (GY)the glory of the pastures;
    they vanish—like (GZ)smoke they vanish away.

21 The wicked borrows but does not pay back,
    but the righteous (HA)is generous and gives;
22 for those blessed by the Lord[m] shall (HB)inherit the land,
    but those cursed by him (HC)shall be cut off.

23 The (HD)steps of a man are (HE)established by the Lord,
    when he delights in his way;
24 (HF)though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong,
    for the Lord (HG)upholds his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old,
    yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
    or his children (HH)begging for bread.
26 He is ever (HI)lending generously,
    and his children become a blessing.

27 (HJ)Turn away from evil and do good;
    so shall you (HK)dwell forever.
28 For the Lord (HL)loves justice;
    he will not forsake his (HM)saints.
They are preserved forever,
    but the children of the wicked shall be (HN)cut off.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land
    and (HO)dwell upon it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
    and his tongue speaks justice.
31 (HP)The law of his God is in his heart;
    his (HQ)steps do not slip.

32 The wicked (HR)watches for the righteous
    and seeks to put him to death.
33 The Lord will not (HS)abandon him to his power
    or let him (HT)be condemned when he is brought to trial.

34 (HU)Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
    and he will exalt you to inherit the land;
    you will look on (HV)when the wicked are cut off.

35 (HW)I have seen a wicked, ruthless man,
    spreading himself like (HX)a green laurel tree.[n]
36 But he passed away,[o] and behold, (HY)he was no more;
    though I sought him, he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless and behold the upright,
    for there is a future for the man of (HZ)peace.
38 But (IA)transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;
    the future of the wicked (IB)shall be cut off.

39 (IC)The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    he is their stronghold in (ID)the time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and (IE)delivers them;
    (IF)he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
    because they (IG)take refuge in him.

Do Not Forsake Me, O Lord

A Psalm of David, (IH)for the memorial offering.

38 O Lord, (II)rebuke me not in your anger,
    nor discipline me in your wrath!
For your (IJ)arrows have sunk into me,
    and your hand (IK)has come down on me.

There is (IL)no soundness in my flesh
    because of your indignation;
there is no health in my (IM)bones
    because of my sin.
For my (IN)iniquities have gone over my head;
    like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.

My wounds stink and fester
    because of my foolishness,
I am (IO)utterly bowed down and (IP)prostrate;
    all the day I (IQ)go about mourning.
For my sides are filled with burning,
    and there is (IR)no soundness in my flesh.
I am feeble and crushed;
    I (IS)groan because of the tumult of my heart.

O Lord, all my longing is before you;
    my (IT)sighing is not hidden from you.
10 My heart throbs; my strength fails me,
    and (IU)the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me.
11 My (IV)friends and companions (IW)stand aloof from my (IX)plague,
    and my nearest kin (IY)stand far off.

12 Those who seek my life (IZ)lay their snares;
    those who seek my hurt (JA)speak of ruin
    and meditate (JB)treachery all day long.

13 But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear,
    like (JC)a mute man who does not open his mouth.
14 I have become like a man who does not hear,
    and in whose mouth are no (JD)rebukes.

15 But for (JE)you, O Lord, do I wait;
    it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.
16 For I said, “Only (JF)let them not rejoice over me,
    who (JG)boast against me when my (JH)foot slips!”

17 For I am (JI)ready to fall,
    and my pain is ever before me.
18 I (JJ)confess my iniquity;
    I am (JK)sorry for my sin.
19 But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty,
    and many are those who hate me (JL)wrongfully.
20 Those who (JM)render me evil for good
    (JN)accuse me because I (JO)follow after good.

21 Do not forsake me, O Lord!
    O my God, be not (JP)far from me!
22 (JQ)Make haste to help me,
    O Lord, my (JR)salvation!

What Is the Measure of My Days?

To the choirmaster: to (JS)Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

39 I said, “I will (JT)guard my ways,
    that I (JU)may not sin with my tongue;
I will (JV)guard my mouth with a muzzle,
    so long as the wicked are in my presence.”
I was (JW)mute and silent;
    I held my peace to no avail,
and my distress grew worse.
    My (JX)heart became hot within me.
As I mused, the fire burned;
    then I spoke with my tongue:

“O Lord, (JY)make me know my end
    and what is the measure of my days;
    let me know how fleeting I am!
Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths,
    and (JZ)my lifetime is as nothing before you.
Surely (KA)all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah
    Surely a man (KB)goes about as a shadow!
Surely for nothing[p] they are in turmoil;
    man (KC)heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather!

“And now, O Lord, for what do I wait?
    (KD)My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my transgressions.
    (KE)Do not make me the scorn of the fool!
(KF)I am mute; I do not open my mouth,
    (KG)for it is you who have done it.
10 (KH)Remove your stroke from me;
    I am spent by the hostility of your hand.
11 When you discipline a man
    with (KI)rebukes for sin,
you (KJ)consume like a (KK)moth what is dear to him;
    (KL)surely all mankind is a mere breath! Selah

12 (KM)“Hear my prayer, O Lord,
    and give ear to my cry;
    hold not your peace at my tears!
For I am (KN)a sojourner with you,
    (KO)a guest, like all my fathers.
13 (KP)Look away from me, that I may smile again,
    (KQ)before I depart and (KR)am no more!”

My Help and My Deliverer

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

40 I (KS)waited patiently for the Lord;
    he inclined to me and (KT)heard my cry.
He drew me up from (KU)the pit of destruction,
    out of (KV)the miry bog,
and (KW)set my feet upon a rock,
    (KX)making my steps secure.
He put (KY)a new song in my mouth,
    a song of praise to our God.
Many will (KZ)see and fear,
    and put their trust in the Lord.

Blessed is the man who (LA)makes
    the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
    to those who (LB)go astray after a lie!
You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
    your (LC)wondrous deeds and your (LD)thoughts toward us;
    none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,
    yet they are (LE)more than can be told.

(LF)In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
    but you have given me an open (LG)ear.[q]
Burnt offering and sin offering
    you have not required.
Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
    in the scroll of the book it is written (LH)of me:
(LI)I delight to do your will, O my God;
    your law is (LJ)within my heart.”

I have told the glad news of deliverance[r]
    in (LK)the great congregation;
behold, I have not (LL)restrained my lips,
    (LM)as you know, O Lord.
10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
    I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
    from the great congregation.

11 As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain
    your mercy from me;
your (LN)steadfast love and your faithfulness will
    ever preserve me!
12 For evils have (LO)encompassed me
    beyond number;
my (LP)iniquities have overtaken me,
    and I cannot (LQ)see;
they are (LR)more than the hairs of my head;
    my heart (LS)fails me.

13 (LT)Be pleased, O Lord, to (LU)deliver me!
    O Lord, (LV)make haste to help me!
14 (LW)Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether
    who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be (LX)turned back and brought to dishonor
    who delight in my hurt!
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame
    who (LY)say to me, “Aha, Aha!”

16 But may all who seek you
    rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation
    (LZ)say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
17 As for me, I am (MA)poor and needy,
    but (MB)the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
    do not delay, O my God!

O Lord, Be Gracious to Me

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

41 (MC)Blessed is the one who considers the poor![s]
    (MD)In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him;
the Lord protects him and keeps him alive;
    he is called blessed in the land;
    you (ME)do not give him up to the will of his enemies.
The Lord sustains him on his sickbed;
    in his illness you restore him to full health.[t]

As for me, I said, “O Lord, (MF)be gracious to me;
    (MG)heal me,[u] for I have sinned against you!”
My enemies say of me in malice,
    “When will he die, and his name perish?”
And when one comes to see me, (MH)he utters empty words,
    while his heart gathers iniquity;
    when he goes out, he tells it abroad.
All who hate me whisper together about me;
    they imagine the worst for me.[v]

They say, “A deadly thing is poured out[w] on him;
    he will not rise again from where he lies.”
Even my (MI)close friend in whom I trusted,
    who (MJ)ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.
10 But you, O Lord, be gracious to me,
    and raise me up, that I may repay them!

11 By this I know that (MK)you delight in me:
    my enemy will not shout in triumph over me.
12 But (ML)you have upheld me because of (MM)my integrity,
    and (MN)set me in your presence (MO)forever.

13 (MP)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting!
Amen and Amen.

Book Two

Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?

To the choirmaster. A Maskil[x] of (MQ)the Sons of Korah.

42 (MR)As a deer pants for flowing streams,
    so pants my soul for you, O God.
(MS)My soul thirsts for God,
    for (MT)the living God.
When shall I come and (MU)appear before God?[y]
(MV)My tears have been my food
    day and night,
(MW)while they say to me all the day long,
    “Where is your God?”
These things I remember,
    as I (MX)pour out my soul:
(MY)how I would go (MZ)with the throng
    and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
    (NA)a multitude keeping festival.

(NB)Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you (NC)in turmoil within me?
(ND)Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation[z] and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;
    therefore I (NE)remember you
(NF)from the land of Jordan and of (NG)Hermon,
    from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
    at the roar of your waterfalls;
(NH)all your breakers and your (NI)waves
    have gone over me.
By day the Lord (NJ)commands his steadfast love,
    and at (NK)night his song is with me,
    a prayer to the God of my life.
I say to God, (NL)my rock:
    “Why have you forgotten me?
(NM)Why do I go mourning
    because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,
    my adversaries taunt me,
(NN)while they say to me all the day long,
    “Where is your God?”

11 (NO)Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation and my God.

Send Out Your Light and Your Truth

43 (NP)Vindicate me, O God, and (NQ)defend my cause
    against an ungodly people,
from (NR)the deceitful and unjust man
    deliver me!
For you are (NS)the God in whom I take refuge;
    why have you (NT)rejected me?
Why do I (NU)go about mourning
    because of the oppression of the enemy?

(NV)Send out your light and your truth;
    let them lead me;
let them bring me to your (NW)holy hill
    and to your (NX)dwelling!
Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the lyre,
    O God, my God.

(NY)Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you in turmoil within me?
(NZ)Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation and my God.

Come to Our Help

To the choirmaster. (OA)A Maskil[aa] of the Sons of Korah.

44 O God, we have heard with our ears,
    (OB)our fathers have told us,
what deeds you performed in their days,
    (OC)in the days of old:
you with your own hand (OD)drove out the nations,
    but (OE)them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
    but (OF)them you set free;
for not (OG)by their own sword did they win the land,
    nor did their own arm save them,
but your right hand and your arm,
    and (OH)the light of your face,
    (OI)for you delighted in them.

(OJ)You are my King, O God;
    (OK)ordain salvation for Jacob!
Through you we (OL)push down our foes;
    through your name we (OM)tread down those who rise up against us.
For not in (ON)my bow do I trust,
    nor can my sword save me.
But you have saved us from our foes
    and have (OO)put to shame those who hate us.
(OP)In God we have boasted continually,
    and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah

But you have (OQ)rejected us and disgraced us
    and (OR)have not gone out with our armies.
10 You have made us (OS)turn back from the foe,
    and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
11 You have made us like (OT)sheep for slaughter
    and have (OU)scattered us among the nations.
12 (OV)You have sold your people for a trifle,
    demanding no high price for them.
13 You have made us (OW)the taunt of our neighbors,
    the derision and (OX)scorn of those around us.
14 You have made us (OY)a byword among the nations,
    (OZ)a laughingstock[ab] among the peoples.
15 All day long my disgrace is before me,
    and (PA)shame has covered my face
16 at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
    at the sight of (PB)the enemy and the avenger.

17 (PC)All this has come upon us,
    though we have not forgotten you,
    and we have not been false to your covenant.
18 Our heart has not turned back,
    nor have our (PD)steps (PE)departed from your way;
19 yet you have (PF)broken us in the place of (PG)jackals
    and covered us with (PH)the shadow of death.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or (PI)spread out our hands to (PJ)a foreign god,
21 (PK)would not God discover this?
    (PL)For he knows the secrets of the heart.
22 Yet (PM)for your sake we are killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

23 (PN)Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
    Rouse yourself! (PO)Do not reject us forever!
24 Why (PP)do you hide your face?
    Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
25 For our (PQ)soul is bowed down to the dust;
    our belly clings to the ground.
26 Rise up; (PR)come to our help!
    (PS)Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!

Your Throne, O God, Is Forever

To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Maskil[ac] of (PT)the Sons of Korah; a love song.

45 My heart overflows with a pleasing theme;
    I address my verses to the king;
    my tongue is like the pen of (PU)a ready scribe.

You are (PV)the most handsome of the sons of men;
    (PW)grace is poured upon your lips;
    therefore God has blessed you forever.
(PX)Gird your (PY)sword on your thigh, O (PZ)mighty one,
    in (QA)your splendor and majesty!

In your majesty (QB)ride out victoriously
    for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness;
    let your right hand teach you (QC)awesome deeds!
Your arrows are sharp
    in the heart of the king's enemies;
    the peoples fall under you.

(QD)Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
    The (QE)scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness;
    (QF)you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness.
Therefore (QG)God, your God, has (QH)anointed you
    with the oil of (QI)gladness (QJ)beyond your companions;
    your robes are all fragrant with (QK)myrrh and aloes and cassia.
From ivory palaces (QL)stringed instruments make you glad;

Psalm 32

Of David. A maskil.[a]

Blessed is the one
    whose transgressions are forgiven,
    whose sins are covered.(A)
Blessed is the one
    whose sin the Lord does not count against them(B)
    and in whose spirit is no deceit.(C)

When I kept silent,(D)
    my bones wasted away(E)
    through my groaning(F) all day long.
For day and night
    your hand was heavy(G) on me;
my strength was sapped(H)
    as in the heat of summer.[b]

Then I acknowledged my sin to you
    and did not cover up my iniquity.(I)
I said, “I will confess(J)
    my transgressions(K) to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.(L)

Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;(M)
surely the rising(N) of the mighty waters(O)
    will not reach them.(P)
You are my hiding place;(Q)
    you will protect me from trouble(R)
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.(S)

I will instruct(T) you and teach you(U) in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on(V) you.
Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle(W)
    or they will not come to you.
10 Many are the woes of the wicked,(X)
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts(Y) in him.

11 Rejoice in the Lord(Z) and be glad, you righteous;
    sing, all you who are upright in heart!

Psalm 33

Sing joyfully(AA) to the Lord, you righteous;
    it is fitting(AB) for the upright(AC) to praise him.
Praise the Lord with the harp;(AD)
    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.(AE)
Sing to him a new song;(AF)
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.(AG)

For the word of the Lord is right(AH) and true;(AI)
    he is faithful(AJ) in all he does.
The Lord loves righteousness and justice;(AK)
    the earth is full of his unfailing love.(AL)

By the word(AM) of the Lord the heavens were made,(AN)
    their starry host(AO) by the breath of his mouth.
He gathers the waters(AP) of the sea into jars[c];(AQ)
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord;(AR)
    let all the people of the world(AS) revere him.(AT)
For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,(AU) and it stood firm.

10 The Lord foils(AV) the plans(AW) of the nations;(AX)
    he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm(AY) forever,
    the purposes(AZ) of his heart through all generations.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,(BA)
    the people he chose(BB) for his inheritance.(BC)
13 From heaven the Lord looks down(BD)
    and sees all mankind;(BE)
14 from his dwelling place(BF) he watches
    all who live on earth—
15 he who forms(BG) the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.(BH)

16 No king is saved by the size of his army;(BI)
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
17 A horse(BJ) is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
18 But the eyes(BK) of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,(BL)
19 to deliver them from death(BM)
    and keep them alive in famine.(BN)

20 We wait(BO) in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
21 In him our hearts rejoice,(BP)
    for we trust in his holy name.(BQ)
22 May your unfailing love(BR) be with us, Lord,
    even as we put our hope in you.

Psalm 34[d][e]

Of David. When he pretended to be insane(BS) before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left.

I will extol the Lord at all times;(BT)
    his praise will always be on my lips.
I will glory(BU) in the Lord;
    let the afflicted hear and rejoice.(BV)
Glorify the Lord(BW) with me;
    let us exalt(BX) his name together.

I sought the Lord,(BY) and he answered me;
    he delivered(BZ) me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;(CA)
    their faces are never covered with shame.(CB)
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.(CC)
The angel of the Lord(CD) encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers(CE) them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;(CF)
    blessed is the one who takes refuge(CG) in him.
Fear the Lord,(CH) you his holy people,
    for those who fear him lack nothing.(CI)
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.(CJ)
11 Come, my children, listen(CK) to me;
    I will teach you(CL) the fear of the Lord.(CM)
12 Whoever of you loves life(CN)
    and desires to see many good days,
13 keep your tongue(CO) from evil
    and your lips from telling lies.(CP)
14 Turn from evil and do good;(CQ)
    seek peace(CR) and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord(CS) are on the righteous,(CT)
    and his ears are attentive(CU) to their cry;
16 but the face of the Lord is against(CV) those who do evil,(CW)
    to blot out their name(CX) from the earth.

17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears(CY) them;
    he delivers them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is close(CZ) to the brokenhearted(DA)
    and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

19 The righteous person may have many troubles,(DB)
    but the Lord delivers him from them all;(DC)
20 he protects all his bones,
    not one of them will be broken.(DD)

21 Evil will slay the wicked;(DE)
    the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord will rescue(DF) his servants;
    no one who takes refuge(DG) in him will be condemned.

Psalm 35

Of David.

Contend,(DH) Lord, with those who contend with me;
    fight(DI) against those who fight against me.
Take up shield(DJ) and armor;
    arise(DK) and come to my aid.(DL)
Brandish spear(DM) and javelin[f](DN)
    against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
    “I am your salvation.(DO)

May those who seek my life(DP)
    be disgraced(DQ) and put to shame;(DR)
may those who plot my ruin
    be turned back(DS) in dismay.
May they be like chaff(DT) before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord(DU) driving them away;
may their path be dark and slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

Since they hid their net(DV) for me without cause(DW)
    and without cause dug a pit(DX) for me,
may ruin overtake them by surprise—(DY)
    may the net they hid entangle them,
    may they fall into the pit,(DZ) to their ruin.
Then my soul will rejoice(EA) in the Lord
    and delight in his salvation.(EB)
10 My whole being will exclaim,
    “Who is like you,(EC) Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong(ED) for them,
    the poor and needy(EE) from those who rob them.”

11 Ruthless witnesses(EF) come forward;
    they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They repay me evil for good(EG)
    and leave me like one bereaved.
13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth(EH)
    and humbled myself with fasting.(EI)
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14     I went about mourning(EJ)
    as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
    as though weeping for my mother.
15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;(EK)
    assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
    They slandered(EL) me without ceasing.
16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;[g](EM)
    they gnashed their teeth(EN) at me.

17 How long,(EO) Lord, will you look on?
    Rescue me from their ravages,
    my precious life(EP) from these lions.(EQ)
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;(ER)
    among the throngs(ES) I will praise you.(ET)
19 Do not let those gloat over me
    who are my enemies(EU) without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason(EV)
    maliciously wink the eye.(EW)
20 They do not speak peaceably,
    but devise false accusations(EX)
    against those who live quietly in the land.
21 They sneer(EY) at me and say, “Aha! Aha!(EZ)
    With our own eyes we have seen it.”

22 Lord, you have seen(FA) this; do not be silent.
    Do not be far(FB) from me, Lord.
23 Awake,(FC) and rise(FD) to my defense!
    Contend(FE) for me, my God and Lord.
24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
    do not let them gloat(FF) over me.
25 Do not let them think, “Aha,(FG) just what we wanted!”
    or say, “We have swallowed him up.”(FH)

26 May all who gloat(FI) over my distress(FJ)
    be put to shame(FK) and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me(FL)
    be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 May those who delight in my vindication(FM)
    shout for joy(FN) and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
    who delights(FO) in the well-being of his servant.”(FP)

28 My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,(FQ)
    your praises all day long.(FR)

Psalm 36[h]

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord.

I have a message from God in my heart
    concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:[i](FS)
There is no fear(FT) of God
    before their eyes.(FU)

In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.(FV)
The words of their mouths(FW) are wicked and deceitful;(FX)
    they fail to act wisely(FY) or do good.(FZ)
Even on their beds they plot evil;(GA)
    they commit themselves to a sinful course(GB)
    and do not reject what is wrong.(GC)

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness(GD) to the skies.(GE)
Your righteousness(GF) is like the highest mountains,(GG)
    your justice like the great deep.(GH)
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.(GI)
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!(GJ)
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.(GK)
They feast on the abundance of your house;(GL)
    you give them drink from your river(GM) of delights.(GN)
For with you is the fountain of life;(GO)
    in your light(GP) we see light.

10 Continue your love(GQ) to those who know you,(GR)
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.(GS)
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked(GT) drive me away.
12 See how the evildoers lie fallen—
    thrown down, not able to rise!(GU)

Psalm 37[j]

Of David.

Do not fret because of those who are evil
    or be envious(GV) of those who do wrong;(GW)
for like the grass they will soon wither,(GX)
    like green plants they will soon die away.(GY)

Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land(GZ) and enjoy safe pasture.(HA)
Take delight(HB) in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.(HC)

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him(HD) and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward(HE) shine like the dawn,(HF)
    your vindication like the noonday sun.

Be still(HG) before the Lord
    and wait patiently(HH) for him;
do not fret(HI) when people succeed in their ways,(HJ)
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.(HK)

Refrain from anger(HL) and turn from wrath;
    do not fret(HM)—it leads only to evil.
For those who are evil will be destroyed,(HN)
    but those who hope(HO) in the Lord will inherit the land.(HP)

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;(HQ)
    though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land(HR)
    and enjoy peace and prosperity.(HS)

12 The wicked plot(HT) against the righteous
    and gnash their teeth(HU) at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
    for he knows their day is coming.(HV)

14 The wicked draw the sword(HW)
    and bend the bow(HX)
to bring down the poor and needy,(HY)
    to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,(HZ)
    and their bows will be broken.(IA)

16 Better the little that the righteous have
    than the wealth(IB) of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,(IC)
    but the Lord upholds(ID) the righteous.

18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,(IE)
    and their inheritance will endure forever.(IF)
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
    in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

20 But the wicked will perish:(IG)
    Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
    they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.(IH)

21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
    but the righteous give generously;(II)
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,
    but those he curses(IJ) will be destroyed.(IK)

23 The Lord makes firm the steps(IL)
    of the one who delights(IM) in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,(IN)
    for the Lord upholds(IO) him with his hand.

25 I was young and now I am old,
    yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken(IP)
    or their children begging(IQ) bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;(IR)
    their children will be a blessing.[k](IS)

27 Turn from evil and do good;(IT)
    then you will dwell in the land forever.(IU)
28 For the Lord loves the just
    and will not forsake his faithful ones.(IV)

Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed[l];
    the offspring of the wicked will perish.(IW)
29 The righteous will inherit the land(IX)
    and dwell in it forever.(IY)

30 The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,(IZ)
    and their tongues speak what is just.
31 The law of their God is in their hearts;(JA)
    their feet do not slip.(JB)

32 The wicked lie in wait(JC) for the righteous,(JD)
    intent on putting them to death;
33 but the Lord will not leave them in the power of the wicked
    or let them be condemned(JE) when brought to trial.(JF)

34 Hope in the Lord(JG)
    and keep his way.(JH)
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
    when the wicked are destroyed,(JI) you will see(JJ) it.

35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
    flourishing(JK) like a luxuriant native tree,
36 but he soon passed away and was no more;
    though I looked for him, he could not be found.(JL)

37 Consider the blameless,(JM) observe the upright;(JN)
    a future awaits those who seek peace.[m](JO)
38 But all sinners(JP) will be destroyed;(JQ)
    there will be no future[n] for the wicked.(JR)

39 The salvation(JS) of the righteous comes from the Lord;
    he is their stronghold in time of trouble.(JT)
40 The Lord helps(JU) them and delivers(JV) them;
    he delivers them from the wicked and saves(JW) them,
    because they take refuge(JX) in him.

Psalm 38[o]

A psalm of David. A petition.

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your wrath.(JY)
Your arrows(JZ) have pierced me,
    and your hand has come down on me.
Because of your wrath there is no health(KA) in my body;
    there is no soundness in my bones(KB) because of my sin.
My guilt has overwhelmed(KC) me
    like a burden too heavy to bear.(KD)

My wounds(KE) fester and are loathsome(KF)
    because of my sinful folly.(KG)
I am bowed down(KH) and brought very low;
    all day long I go about mourning.(KI)
My back is filled with searing pain;(KJ)
    there is no health(KK) in my body.
I am feeble and utterly crushed;(KL)
    I groan(KM) in anguish of heart.(KN)

All my longings(KO) lie open before you, Lord;
    my sighing(KP) is not hidden from you.
10 My heart pounds,(KQ) my strength fails(KR) me;
    even the light has gone from my eyes.(KS)
11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;(KT)
    my neighbors stay far away.
12 Those who want to kill me set their traps,(KU)
    those who would harm me talk of my ruin;(KV)
    all day long they scheme and lie.(KW)

13 I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,(KX)
    like the mute, who cannot speak;
14 I have become like one who does not hear,
    whose mouth can offer no reply.
15 Lord, I wait(KY) for you;
    you will answer,(KZ) Lord my God.
16 For I said, “Do not let them gloat(LA)
    or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.”(LB)

17 For I am about to fall,(LC)
    and my pain(LD) is ever with me.
18 I confess my iniquity;(LE)
    I am troubled by my sin.
19 Many have become my enemies(LF) without cause[p];
    those who hate me(LG) without reason(LH) are numerous.
20 Those who repay my good with evil(LI)
    lodge accusations(LJ) against me,
    though I seek only to do what is good.

21 Lord, do not forsake me;(LK)
    do not be far(LL) from me, my God.
22 Come quickly(LM) to help me,(LN)
    my Lord and my Savior.(LO)

Psalm 39[q]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

I said, “I will watch my ways(LP)
    and keep my tongue from sin;(LQ)
I will put a muzzle on my mouth(LR)
    while in the presence of the wicked.”
So I remained utterly silent,(LS)
    not even saying anything good.
But my anguish(LT) increased;
    my heart grew hot(LU) within me.
While I meditated,(LV) the fire(LW) burned;
    then I spoke with my tongue:

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end
    and the number of my days;(LX)
    let me know how fleeting(LY) my life is.(LZ)
You have made my days(MA) a mere handbreadth;
    the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,(MB)
    even those who seem secure.[r]

“Surely everyone goes around(MC) like a mere phantom;(MD)
    in vain they rush about,(ME) heaping up wealth(MF)
    without knowing whose it will finally be.(MG)

“But now, Lord, what do I look for?
    My hope is in you.(MH)
Save me(MI) from all my transgressions;(MJ)
    do not make me the scorn(MK) of fools.
I was silent;(ML) I would not open my mouth,(MM)
    for you are the one who has done this.(MN)
10 Remove your scourge from me;
    I am overcome by the blow(MO) of your hand.(MP)
11 When you rebuke(MQ) and discipline(MR) anyone for their sin,
    you consume(MS) their wealth like a moth(MT)
    surely everyone is but a breath.(MU)

12 “Hear my prayer, Lord,
    listen to my cry for help;(MV)
    do not be deaf(MW) to my weeping.(MX)
I dwell with you as a foreigner,(MY)
    a stranger,(MZ) as all my ancestors were.(NA)
13 Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again
    before I depart and am no more.”(NB)

Psalm 40[s](NC)

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

I waited patiently(ND) for the Lord;
    he turned to me and heard my cry.(NE)
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,(NF)
    out of the mud(NG) and mire;(NH)
he set my feet(NI) on a rock(NJ)
    and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song(NK) in my mouth,
    a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord(NL)
    and put their trust(NM) in him.

Blessed is the one(NN)
    who trusts in the Lord,(NO)
who does not look to the proud,(NP)
    to those who turn aside to false gods.[t](NQ)
Many, Lord my God,
    are the wonders(NR) you have done,
    the things you planned for us.
None can compare(NS) with you;
    were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
    they would be too many(NT) to declare.

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—(NU)
    but my ears you have opened[u](NV)
    burnt offerings(NW) and sin offerings[v] you did not require.
Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
    it is written about me in the scroll.[w](NX)
I desire to do your will,(NY) my God;(NZ)
    your law is within my heart.”(OA)

I proclaim your saving acts(OB) in the great assembly;(OC)
    I do not seal my lips, Lord,
    as you know.(OD)
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
    I speak of your faithfulness(OE) and your saving help.
I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness
    from the great assembly.(OF)

11 Do not withhold your mercy(OG) from me, Lord;
    may your love(OH) and faithfulness(OI) always protect(OJ) me.
12 For troubles(OK) without number surround me;
    my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.(OL)
They are more than the hairs of my head,(OM)
    and my heart fails(ON) within me.
13 Be pleased to save me, Lord;
    come quickly, Lord, to help me.(OO)

14 May all who want to take my life(OP)
    be put to shame and confusion;(OQ)
may all who desire my ruin(OR)
    be turned back in disgrace.
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”(OS)
    be appalled at their own shame.
16 But may all who seek you(OT)
    rejoice and be glad(OU) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”(OV)

17 But as for me, I am poor and needy;(OW)
    may the Lord think(OX) of me.
You are my help(OY) and my deliverer;(OZ)
    you are my God, do not delay.(PA)

Psalm 41[x]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Blessed(PB) are those who have regard for the weak;(PC)
    the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.(PD)
The Lord protects(PE) and preserves them—(PF)
    they are counted among the blessed in the land—(PG)
    he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.(PH)
The Lord sustains them on their sickbed(PI)
    and restores them from their bed of illness.(PJ)

I said, “Have mercy(PK) on me, Lord;
    heal(PL) me, for I have sinned(PM) against you.”
My enemies say of me in malice,
    “When will he die and his name perish?(PN)
When one of them comes to see me,
    he speaks falsely,(PO) while his heart gathers slander;(PP)
    then he goes out and spreads(PQ) it around.

All my enemies whisper together(PR) against me;
    they imagine the worst for me, saying,
“A vile disease has afflicted him;
    he will never get up(PS) from the place where he lies.”
Even my close friend,(PT)
    someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
    has turned[y] against me.(PU)

10 But may you have mercy(PV) on me, Lord;
    raise me up,(PW) that I may repay(PX) them.
11 I know that you are pleased with me,(PY)
    for my enemy does not triumph over me.(PZ)
12 Because of my integrity(QA) you uphold me(QB)
    and set me in your presence forever.(QC)

13 Praise(QD) be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(QE)
    from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.(QF)

BOOK II

Psalms 42–72

Psalm 42[z][aa]

For the director of music. A maskil[ab] of the Sons of Korah.

As the deer(QG) pants for streams of water,(QH)
    so my soul pants(QI) for you, my God.
My soul thirsts(QJ) for God, for the living God.(QK)
    When can I go(QL) and meet with God?
My tears(QM) have been my food
    day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”(QN)
These things I remember
    as I pour out my soul:(QO)
how I used to go to the house of God(QP)
    under the protection of the Mighty One[ac]
with shouts of joy(QQ) and praise(QR)
    among the festive throng.(QS)

Why, my soul, are you downcast?(QT)
    Why so disturbed(QU) within me?
Put your hope in God,(QV)
    for I will yet praise(QW) him,
    my Savior(QX) and my God.(QY)

My soul is downcast within me;
    therefore I will remember(QZ) you
from the land of the Jordan,(RA)
    the heights of Hermon(RB)—from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep(RC)
    in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
    have swept over me.(RD)

By day the Lord directs his love,(RE)
    at night(RF) his song(RG) is with me—
    a prayer to the God of my life.(RH)

I say to God my Rock,(RI)
    “Why have you forgotten(RJ) me?
Why must I go about mourning,(RK)
    oppressed(RL) by the enemy?”(RM)
10 My bones suffer mortal agony(RN)
    as my foes taunt(RO) me,
saying to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”(RP)

11 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.(RQ)

Psalm 43[ad]

Vindicate me, my God,
    and plead my cause(RR)
    against an unfaithful nation.
Rescue me(RS) from those who are
    deceitful and wicked.(RT)
You are God my stronghold.
    Why have you rejected(RU) me?
Why must I go about mourning,(RV)
    oppressed by the enemy?(RW)
Send me your light(RX) and your faithful care,(RY)
    let them lead me;(RZ)
let them bring me to your holy mountain,(SA)
    to the place where you dwell.(SB)
Then I will go(SC) to the altar(SD) of God,
    to God, my joy(SE) and my delight.(SF)
I will praise you with the lyre,(SG)
    O God, my God.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.(SH)

Psalm 44[ae]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[af]

We have heard it with our ears,(SI) O God;
    our ancestors have told us(SJ)
what you did in their days,
    in days long ago.(SK)
With your hand you drove out(SL) the nations
    and planted(SM) our ancestors;
you crushed(SN) the peoples
    and made our ancestors flourish.(SO)
It was not by their sword(SP) that they won the land,
    nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand,(SQ) your arm,(SR)
    and the light(SS) of your face, for you loved(ST) them.

You are my King(SU) and my God,(SV)
    who decrees[ag] victories(SW) for Jacob.
Through you we push back(SX) our enemies;
    through your name we trample(SY) our foes.
I put no trust in my bow,(SZ)
    my sword does not bring me victory;
but you give us victory(TA) over our enemies,
    you put our adversaries to shame.(TB)
In God we make our boast(TC) all day long,(TD)
    and we will praise your name forever.[ah](TE)

But now you have rejected(TF) and humbled us;(TG)
    you no longer go out with our armies.(TH)
10 You made us retreat(TI) before the enemy,
    and our adversaries have plundered(TJ) us.
11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep(TK)
    and have scattered us among the nations.(TL)
12 You sold your people for a pittance,(TM)
    gaining nothing from their sale.

13 You have made us a reproach(TN) to our neighbors,(TO)
    the scorn(TP) and derision(TQ) of those around us.
14 You have made us a byword(TR) among the nations;
    the peoples shake their heads(TS) at us.
15 I live in disgrace(TT) all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame(TU)
16 at the taunts(TV) of those who reproach and revile(TW) me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.(TX)

17 All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten(TY) you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
18 Our hearts had not turned(TZ) back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 But you crushed(UA) us and made us a haunt for jackals;(UB)
    you covered us over with deep darkness.(UC)

20 If we had forgotten(UD) the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,(UE)
21 would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?(UF)
22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep(UG) to be slaughtered.(UH)

23 Awake,(UI) Lord! Why do you sleep?(UJ)
    Rouse yourself!(UK) Do not reject us forever.(UL)
24 Why do you hide your face(UM)
    and forget(UN) our misery and oppression?(UO)

25 We are brought down to the dust;(UP)
    our bodies cling to the ground.
26 Rise up(UQ) and help us;
    rescue(UR) us because of your unfailing love.(US)

Psalm 45[ai]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[aj] A wedding song.(UT)

My heart is stirred by a noble theme
    as I recite my verses for the king;
    my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.

You are the most excellent of men
    and your lips have been anointed with grace,(UU)
    since God has blessed you forever.(UV)

Gird your sword(UW) on your side, you mighty one;(UX)
    clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.(UY)
In your majesty ride forth victoriously(UZ)
    in the cause of truth, humility and justice;(VA)
    let your right hand(VB) achieve awesome deeds.(VC)
Let your sharp arrows(VD) pierce the hearts(VE) of the king’s enemies;(VF)
    let the nations fall beneath your feet.
Your throne, O God,[ak] will last for ever and ever;(VG)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You love righteousness(VH) and hate wickedness;(VI)
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
    by anointing(VJ) you with the oil of joy.(VK)
All your robes are fragrant(VL) with myrrh(VM) and aloes(VN) and cassia;(VO)
    from palaces adorned with ivory(VP)
    the music of the strings(VQ) makes you glad.

  37. Psalm 45:6 Here the king is addressed as God’s representative.

32 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.

For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.

11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

33 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.

Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.

Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.

He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

10 The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

11 The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

13 The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.

14 From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

15 He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.

16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.

17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.

18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;

19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.

22 Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

34 I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.

11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

16 The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.

20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

21 Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.

22 The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

35 Plead my cause, O Lord, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me.

Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help.

Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.

Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt.

Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the Lord chase them.

Let their way be dark and slippery: and let the angel of the Lord persecute them.

For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have digged for my soul.

Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall.

And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord: it shall rejoice in his salvation.

10 All my bones shall say, Lord, who is like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him?

11 False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.

12 They rewarded me evil for good to the spoiling of my soul.

13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

14 I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother.

15 But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yea, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not:

16 With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

17 Lord, how long wilt thou look on? rescue my soul from their destructions, my darling from the lions.

18 I will give thee thanks in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people.

19 Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

20 For they speak not peace: but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land.

21 Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.

22 This thou hast seen, O Lord: keep not silence: O Lord, be not far from me.

23 Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord.

24 Judge me, O Lord my God, according to thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me.

25 Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up.

26 Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.

27 Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.

28 And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long.

36 The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.

For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.

The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good.

He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.

Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.

Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O Lord, thou preservest man and beast.

How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.

For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

10 O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee; and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.

11 Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked remove me.

12 There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise.

37 Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.

10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.

13 The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.

14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.

15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.

16 A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.

17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the Lord upholdeth the righteous.

18 The Lord knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.

19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

21 The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.

22 For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.

23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.

24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.

27 Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore.

28 For the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.

29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.

30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.

31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.

32 The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him.

33 The Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

34 Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.

35 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.

36 Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble.

40 And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

38 O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.

For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.

I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.

I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.

10 My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.

11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

12 They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.

13 But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.

14 Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.

15 For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.

16 For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.

17 For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.

18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

19 But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.

20 They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is.

21 Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not far from me.

22 Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.

39 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.

I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue,

Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: that I may know how frail I am.

Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.

Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.

I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.

10 Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.

11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.

12 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.

13 O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more.

40 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,

I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest.

10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

11 Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me.

14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.

15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.

16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.

17 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

41 Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.

The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.

The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

I said, Lord, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.

Mine enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish?

And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad, he telleth it.

All that hate me whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt.

An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.

Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

10 But thou, O Lord, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them.

11 By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.

12 And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever.

13 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.

42 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

10 As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?

11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

43 Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.

Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

44 We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.

Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.

12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.

17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;

19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

45 My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.

Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty.

And in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.

Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; whereby the people fall under thee.

Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.

Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.

Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir.

10 Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house;

11 So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.

12 And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat thy favour.

13 The king's daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold.

14 She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee.

15 With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king's palace.

16 Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children, whom thou mayest make princes in all the earth.

17 I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.

46 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.

The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth.

He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.

10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

47 O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

For the Lord most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.

He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.

He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.

Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.

For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.

48 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.

Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

God is known in her palaces for a refuge.

For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.

They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away.

Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.

Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.

As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah.

We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.

10 According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.

11 Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.

12 Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof.

13 Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.

14 For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.

49 Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:

Both low and high, rich and poor, together.

My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

10 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.

11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

13 This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

17 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.

18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.

19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.

20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

50 The mighty God, even the Lord, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.

Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.

He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.

Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.

And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.

Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.

I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.

I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.

10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

11 I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:

15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

16 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?

17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and casteth my words behind thee.

18 When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.

19 Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.

20 Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.

21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.

22 Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

23 Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.

51 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
