Joy Comes with the Morning

A Psalm of David. A song at the dedication of (A)the temple.

30 I will (B)extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up
    and have not let my foes (C)rejoice over me.
O Lord my God, I (D)cried to you for help,
    and you have (E)healed me.
O Lord, you have brought up my soul from (F)Sheol;
    you restored me to life from among those who (G)go down to the pit.[a]

Sing praises to the Lord, O you (H)his saints,
    and (I)give thanks to his holy name.[b]
(J)For his anger is but for a moment,
    and (K)his favor is for a lifetime.[c]
(L)Weeping may tarry for the night,
    but (M)joy comes with the morning.

As for me, I said in my (N)prosperity,
    “I shall never be (O)moved.”
By your favor, O Lord,
    you made my (P)mountain stand strong;
you (Q)hid your face;
    I was (R)dismayed.

To you, O Lord, I cry,
    and (S)to the Lord I plead for mercy:
“What profit is there in my death,[d]
    if I go down to the pit?[e]
Will (T)the dust praise you?
    Will it tell of your faithfulness?
10 (U)Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!
    O Lord, be my helper!”

11 You have turned for me my mourning into (V)dancing;
    you have loosed my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness,
12 that my (W)glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
    O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

Into Your Hand I Commit My Spirit

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

31 (X)In you, O Lord, do I (Y)take refuge;
    (Z)let me never be put to shame;
    in your (AA)righteousness deliver me!
Incline your ear to me;
    rescue me speedily!
Be (AB)a rock of (AC)refuge for me,
    a strong fortress to save me!

For you are my rock and my fortress;
    and for your (AD)name's sake you lead me and guide me;
you (AE)take me out of (AF)the net they have hidden for me,
    for you are my (AG)refuge.
(AH)Into your hand I commit my spirit;
    you have redeemed me, O Lord, (AI)faithful God.

I (AJ)hate[f] those who pay (AK)regard to worthless (AL)idols,
    but I trust in the Lord.
I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love,
    because you have seen my affliction;
    you have (AM)known the distress of my soul,
and you have not (AN)delivered me into the hand of the enemy;
    you have set my feet in (AO)a broad place.

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am (AP)in distress;
    (AQ)my eye is wasted from grief;
    my soul and my body also.
10 For my life is spent with sorrow,
    and my years with sighing;
my strength fails because of my iniquity,
    and (AR)my bones waste away.

11 Because of all my adversaries I have become (AS)a reproach,
    especially to my (AT)neighbors,
and an object of dread to my acquaintances;
    those who see me in the street (AU)flee from me.
12 I have been (AV)forgotten like one who is dead;
    I have become like (AW)a broken vessel.
13 For I (AX)hear the whispering of many—
    terror on every side!—
(AY)as they scheme together against me,
    as they plot to take my life.

14 But I (AZ)trust in you, O Lord;
    I say, “You are my God.”
15 My (BA)times are in your hand;
    (BB)rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!
16 (BC)Make your face shine on your servant;
    save me in your steadfast love!
17 O Lord, (BD)let me not be put to shame,
    for I call upon you;
let the wicked be put to shame;
    let them go (BE)silently to Sheol.
18 Let the lying lips be mute,
    which (BF)speak (BG)insolently against the righteous
    in pride and contempt.

19 Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
    which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you,
    (BH)in the sight of the children of mankind!
20 In (BI)the cover of your presence you hide them
    from the plots of men;
you (BJ)store them in your shelter
    from the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be the Lord,
    for he has wondrously (BK)shown his steadfast love to me
    when I was in (BL)a besieged city.
22 I had said in my (BM)alarm,[g]
    “I am (BN)cut off from (BO)your sight.”
But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy
    when I cried to you for help.

23 Love the Lord, all you his (BP)saints!
    The Lord preserves the faithful
    but abundantly (BQ)repays the one who acts in pride.
24 (BR)Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
    all you who wait for the Lord!

Blessed Are the Forgiven

A Maskil[h] of David.

32 (BS)Blessed is the one whose (BT)transgression is forgiven,
    whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the Lord (BU)counts no iniquity,
    and in whose spirit (BV)there is no deceit.

For when I kept silent, my (BW)bones wasted away
    through my (BX)groaning all day long.
For day and night your (BY)hand was heavy upon me;
    my strength was dried up[i] as by the heat of summer. Selah

I (BZ)acknowledged my sin to you,
    and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I (CA)will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
    and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

Therefore let everyone who is (CB)godly
    offer prayer to you at a time when you (CC)may be found;
surely in the rush of (CD)great waters,
    they shall not reach him.
You are a (CE)hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from (CF)trouble;
    you surround me with (CG)shouts of deliverance. Selah

I will (CH)instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will (CI)counsel you with my eye upon you.
(CJ)Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
    which must be curbed with (CK)bit and bridle,
    or it will not stay near you.

10 (CL)Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
    but steadfast love surrounds the one who (CM)trusts in the Lord.
11 (CN)Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,
    and (CO)shout for joy, all you (CP)upright in heart!

The Steadfast Love of the Lord

33 (CQ)Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
    (CR)Praise befits the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the (CS)lyre;
    make melody to him with (CT)the harp of (CU)ten strings!
Sing to him (CV)a new song;
    play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

For the word of the Lord is upright,
    and all his work is done in (CW)faithfulness.
He (CX)loves righteousness and justice;
    (CY)the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

By (CZ)the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
    and by (DA)the breath of his mouth all (DB)their host.
He gathers the waters of the sea as (DC)a heap;
    he (DD)puts the deeps in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
    let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For (DE)he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded, and it stood firm.

10 The Lord (DF)brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
    he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 (DG)The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
    the plans of his heart to all generations.
12 (DH)Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people whom he has (DI)chosen as his heritage!

13 The Lord (DJ)looks down from heaven;
    he sees all the children of man;
14 from (DK)where he sits enthroned he (DL)looks out
    on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
    and observes all their deeds.
16 (DM)The king is not saved by his great army;
    a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 (DN)The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
    and by its great might it cannot rescue.

18 Behold, (DO)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
    (DP)on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may (DQ)deliver their soul from death
    and keep them alive in (DR)famine.

20 Our soul (DS)waits for the Lord;
    he is our (DT)help and (DU)our shield.
21 For our heart is (DV)glad in him,
    because we (DW)trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.

Taste and See That the Lord Is Good

[j] Of David, when he (DX)changed his behavior before (DY)Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.

34 I will bless the Lord (DZ)at all times;
    his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul (EA)makes its boast in the Lord;
    let the humble hear and (EB)be glad.
Oh, (EC)magnify the Lord with me,
    and let us exalt his name together!

I (ED)sought the Lord, and he answered me
    and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are (EE)radiant,
    and their faces shall never be ashamed.
(EF)This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
    and (EG)saved him out of all his troubles.
(EH)The angel of the Lord (EI)encamps
    around those who fear him, and delivers them.

Oh, (EJ)taste and see that (EK)the Lord is good!
    (EL)Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
    for those who fear him have no lack!
10 (EM)The young lions suffer want and hunger;
    but those who (EN)seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11 (EO)Come, O children, listen to me;
    (EP)I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 (EQ)What man is there who desires life
    and loves many days, that he may (ER)see good?
13 (ES)Keep your tongue from evil
    and your lips from (ET)speaking deceit.
14 (EU)Turn away from evil and do good;
    seek peace and (EV)pursue it.

15 (EW)The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
    (EX)and his ears toward their cry.
16 (EY)The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
    to (EZ)cut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 (FA)When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
    and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to (FB)the brokenhearted
    and saves (FC)the crushed in spirit.

19 (FD)Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
    (FE)but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones;
    (FF)not one of them is broken.
21 (FG)Affliction will slay the wicked,
    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord (FH)redeems the life of his servants;
    none of those who take refuge in him will be (FI)condemned.
