Psalm 140

For the worship leader. A song of David.

Save me, O Eternal One, from the evil men who seek my life.
    Shield me from this band of violent men.
Their hearts devise evil! They conspire against me;
    they are constantly causing a storm of war.
These snakes have sharpened their tongues;
    viper venom hides beneath their lips.[a]

[pause][b]

Keep me from the grip of these cruel men, O Eternal One.
    Shield me from this band of violent men
    whose only intention is to trip me up and undermine all I do.
Those arrogant people are trying to catch me;
    they’ve laid their trap, hiding a net along my path;
    their traps are set, and I am the prey.

[pause]

“Eternal One,” I said, “You are my one and only God.
    Hear me, O Eternal, hear my humble cry for rescue.
O Lord, Eternal One, power of my deliverance,
    You are my helmet in the day of battle.
So do not fulfill the desires of these evildoers, Eternal One;
    do not advance their evil schemes, lest they brag about their successes.

[pause]

“As for the gang leader of those who surround me,
    let their mischievous words cover them; smother them in trouble.
10 Let hot coals fall from heaven upon them
    and cast them into the roaring fires.
    May they sink into the muddy marsh from which there is no return.
11 Let no liar find a home anywhere in the land;
    let evil hunt down the violent man and do him in quickly.”

12 I am certain the Eternal supports the cause of the distressed;
    the poor will receive the justice they deserve.
13 Indeed, the just-living will glorify Your name,
    and honorable people will be at home in Your presence.

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Rescue me,(A) Lord, from evildoers;
    protect me from the violent,(B)
who devise evil plans(C) in their hearts
    and stir up war(D) every day.
They make their tongues as sharp as(E) a serpent’s;
    the poison of vipers(F) is on their lips.[b]

Keep me safe,(G) Lord, from the hands of the wicked;(H)
    protect me from the violent,
    who devise ways to trip my feet.
The arrogant have hidden a snare(I) for me;
    they have spread out the cords of their net(J)
    and have set traps(K) for me along my path.

I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”(L)
    Hear, Lord, my cry for mercy.(M)
Sovereign Lord,(N) my strong deliverer,
    you shield my head in the day of battle.
Do not grant the wicked(O) their desires, Lord;
    do not let their plans succeed.

Those who surround me proudly rear their heads;
    may the mischief of their lips engulf them.(P)
10 May burning coals fall on them;
    may they be thrown into the fire,(Q)
    into miry pits, never to rise.
11 May slanderers not be established in the land;
    may disaster hunt down the violent.(R)

12 I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor(S)
    and upholds the cause(T) of the needy.(U)
13 Surely the righteous will praise your name,(V)
    and the upright will live(W) in your presence.(X)

Servant: 34 I am Abraham’s servant. 35 The Eternal One has blessed my master in a multitude of ways; he has become a great and wealthy man. The Eternal has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female servants, camels and donkeys. 36 Sarah, my master’s wife, gave birth to his son when she was quite old, and Abraham has passed on all he has to him.

37 My master made me swear, saying, “You will not arrange for my son to marry any of the Canaanite daughters here where we are living; 38 instead, you will go to my father’s house—to my own relatives to find a wife for my son.” 39 I asked my master, “What if the woman won’t follow me to this unfamiliar land?” 40 But he told me, “The Eternal One, with whom I walked all these years, will send His messenger with you to guide and help you along the way. I know you will find a wife for my son among my relatives, from my father’s family. 41 When you reach my family, then you will be free from my oath. Even if they won’t give her to you, you will still be free from my oath.”

34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.(A) 35 The Lord has blessed(B) my master abundantly,(C) and he has become wealthy.(D) He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.(E) 36 My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age,(F) and he has given him everything he owns.(G) 37 And my master made me swear an oath,(H) and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,(I) 38 but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.’(J)

39 “Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’(K)

40 “He replied, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked faithfully,(L) will send his angel with you(M) and make your journey a success,(N) so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family.(O) 41 You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you—then you will be released from my oath.’(P)

Laban and Bethuel: 50 There is no doubt this comes from the Eternal One. We cannot find fault or add anything to what you have said. 51 Look, you’ve found Rebekah here. Take her, and go. Let her marry your master’s son as the Eternal has intended.

52 When Abraham’s servant heard this, he bowed low to the ground before the Eternal. 53 He brought out silver and gold jewelry and beautiful clothes, and the servant presented them to Rebekah. He also gave her brother and her mother expensive ornaments to pay her bride-price. 54 Then he and the men who traveled with him ate and drank heartily, and they spent the night there. After everyone had risen the next morning, he asked his hosts for permission to leave and return to his master with Rebekah.

Laban and Rebekah’s Mother: 55 Allow Rebekah to remain with us just a little while longer—perhaps 10 days. After that, she may go.

Servant: 56 Please don’t delay my journey. Since the Eternal One has made me successful in my mission, grant me permission to leave and return to my master.

Laban and Rebekah’s Mother: 57 We’ll call Rebekah now and ask her what she wants to do.

58 They called for Rebekah.

Laban and Rebekah’s Mother (to Rebekah): Are you willing to go with this man?

Rebekah: Yes, I will go.

59 So the family gathered and sent Rebekah, their sister, along with her nurse to go with Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 They all blessed Rebekah, saying,

May you, our dear sister,
    be blessed with thousands upon thousands of children,
And may your descendants possess
    the cities of their enemies.

61 At last Rebekah and her maidservants all went out, mounted the camels, and followed Abraham’s trusted servant back toward Canaan. This is how the servant found Rebekah and took her to be Isaac’s wife.

62 Meanwhile, Isaac had come back from a trip to Beer-lahai-roi and was living in the Negev. 63 Isaac went outside toward evening to take a walk in the field. As he was deep in thought, he looked up and saw the camels coming toward him. 64 At the same time, Rebekah looked up; and when she saw Isaac, she slipped down quickly from the camel 65 and spoke softly to the servant.

Rebekah: Who is that man over there, walking in the field to meet us?

Servant: Ah, it is my young master.

So she took her veil and covered herself so as to be in proper attire to meet her future husband. 66 When Isaac reached them, the servant told him all of the amazing things that had happened. 67 Then Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent. He took her as his wife and slept with her, and grew to love her deeply. In this way, Isaac found comfort in the wake of his mother’s death.

50 Laban and Bethuel(A) answered, “This is from the Lord;(B) we can say nothing to you one way or the other.(C) 51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.(D)

52 When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord.(E) 53 Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing(F) and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts(G) to her brother and to her mother. 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there.

When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way(H) to my master.”

55 But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so;(I) then you[a] may go.”

56 But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success(J) to my journey. Send me on my way(K) so I may go to my master.”

57 Then they said, “Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.”(L) 58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”

“I will go,”(M) she said.

59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way,(N) along with her nurse(O) and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed(P) Rebekah and said to her,

“Our sister, may you increase
    to thousands upon thousands;(Q)
may your offspring possess
    the cities of their enemies.”(R)

61 Then Rebekah and her attendants(S) got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

62 Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi,(T) for he was living in the Negev.(U) 63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate,[b](V) and as he looked up,(W) he saw camels approaching. 64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel(X) 65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”

“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil(Y) and covered herself.

66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. 67 Isaac brought her into the tent(Z) of his mother Sarah,(AA) and he married Rebekah.(AB) So she became his wife, and he loved her;(AC) and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.(AD)

My loved ones, in one sense, I am not writing a new command for you. I am only reminding you of the old command. It’s a word you already know, a word that has existed from the beginning. However, in another sense, I am writing a new command for you. The new command is the truth that He lived; and now you are living it, too, because the darkness is fading and the true light is already shining among you.

Anyone who says, “I live in the light,” but hates his brother or sister is still living in the shadows. 10 Anyone who loves his brother or sister lives in the light and will not trip because his conscience is clear. 11 But anyone who hates his brother is in the darkness, stumbling around with no idea where he is going, blinded by the darkness.
