Give Thanks to the Lord

Of David.

138 (A)I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
    before (B)the gods I sing your praise;
I bow down (C)toward your (D)holy temple
    and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
    for you have exalted above all things
    your name and your word.[a]
On the day I called, you answered me;
    my strength of soul you increased.[b]

(E)All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord,
    for they have heard the words of your mouth,
and they shall sing of (F)the ways of the Lord,
    for great is the glory of the Lord.
(G)For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,
    but the haughty he knows from afar.

(H)Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
    you (I)preserve my life;
you (J)stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
    and your (K)right hand delivers me.
The Lord will (L)fulfill his purpose for me;
    (M)your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
    Do not forsake (N)the work of your hands.

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and (A)wisdom and knowledge of God! (B)How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

36 For (F)from him and through him and to him are all things. (G)To him be glory forever. Amen.

A Living Sacrifice

12 (H)I appeal to you therefore, brothers,[a] by the mercies of God, (I)to present your bodies (J)as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.[b] (K)Do not be conformed to this world,[c] but be transformed by (L)the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may (M)discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.[d]

Gifts of Grace

For (N)by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you (O)not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, (P)each according to (Q)the measure of faith that God has assigned. For (R)as in one body we have many members,[e] and the members do not all have the same function, so we, (S)though many, (T)are one body in Christ, and individually (U)members one of another. (V)Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if (W)prophecy, (X)in proportion to our faith; if (Y)service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; (Z)the one who leads,[f] with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with (AA)cheerfulness.

Doxology

33 Oh, the depth of the riches(A) of the wisdom and[a] knowledge of God!(B)
    How unsearchable his judgments,
    and his paths beyond tracing out!(C)
34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord?
    Or who has been his counselor?”[b](D)
35 “Who has ever given to God,
    that God should repay them?”[c](E)
36 For from him and through him and for him are all things.(F)
    To him be the glory forever! Amen.(G)

A Living Sacrifice

12 Therefore, I urge you,(H) brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,(I) holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform(J) to the pattern of this world,(K) but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.(L) Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is(M)—his good, pleasing(N) and perfect will.

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

For by the grace given me(O) I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,(P) so in Christ we, though many, form one body,(Q) and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts,(R) according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying,(S) then prophesy in accordance with your[d] faith;(T) if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;(U) if it is to encourage, then give encouragement;(V) if it is giving, then give generously;(W) if it is to lead,[e] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

It is actually reported that there is (A)sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, (B)for a man has his father's wife. And (C)you are arrogant! Ought you (D)not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

For though (E)absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled (F)in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are (G)to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so (H)that his spirit may be saved (I)in the day of the Lord.[a]

(J)Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that (K)a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, (L)not with the old leaven, (M)the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter (N)not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 (O)not at all meaning (P)the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, (Q)since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone (R)who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging (S)outsiders? (T)Is it not those inside the church[b] whom you are to judge? 13 God judges[c] those outside. (U)“Purge the evil person from among you.”

Dealing With a Case of Incest

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(A) And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(B) and have put out of your fellowship(C) the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(D) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(E) on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over(F) to Satan(G) for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(H)

Your boasting is not good.(I) Don’t you know that a little yeast(J) leavens the whole batch of dough?(K) Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.(L) Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread(M) of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate(N) with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world(O) who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister[c](P) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater(Q) or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.(R)

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside(S) the church? Are you not to judge those inside?(T) 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”[d](U)
