Psalm 11

The Lord Is in His Holy Temple

To the choirmaster. Of David.

11 In the Lord I take refuge;
how can you say to my soul,
    ^(A)“Flee like a bird to your mountain,
²for behold, the wicked ^(B)bend the bow;
    ^(C)they have fitted their arrow to the string
    to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart;
³if ^(D)the foundations are destroyed,
    what can the righteous do?”^[a]

⁴^(E)The Lord is in his holy temple;
    the Lord's ^(F)throne is in heaven;
    his eyes see, his eyelids ^(G)test the children of man.
⁵The Lord ^(H)tests the righteous,
    but ^(I)his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.
⁶Let him rain coals on the wicked;
    ^(J)fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be ^(K)the portion of their cup.
⁷For the Lord is righteous;
he ^(L)loves righteous deeds;
    ^(M)the upright shall behold his face.

Judgment on the Whole Earth

24 Behold, ^(A)the Lord will empty the earth^[a] and make it desolate,
    and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants.
²^(B)And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest;
    as with the slave, so with his master;
    as with the maid, so with her mistress;
^(C)as with the buyer, so with the seller;
    as with the lender, so with the borrower;
    ^(D)as with the creditor, so with the debtor.
³^(E)The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered;
    ^(F)for the Lord has spoken this word.

⁴^(G)The earth mourns and withers;
    the world languishes and withers;
    the highest people of the earth languish.
⁵The earth lies ^(H)defiled
    under its inhabitants;
for ^(I)they have transgressed the laws,
    violated the statutes,
    broken the everlasting covenant.
⁶Therefore ^(J)a curse devours the earth,
    and its inhabitants ^(K)suffer for their guilt;
therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched,
    and few men are left.
⁷^(L)The wine mourns,
    the vine languishes,
    all the merry-hearted sigh.
⁸^(M)The mirth of the tambourines is stilled,
    the noise of the jubilant has ceased,
    the mirth of the lyre is stilled.
⁹No more do they drink wine ^(N)with singing;
    strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
¹⁰^(O)The wasted city is broken down;
    ^(P)every house is shut up so that none can enter.
¹¹^(Q)There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine;
    ^(R)all joy has grown dark;
    the gladness of the earth is banished.
¹²Desolation is left in the city;
    the gates are battered into ruins.
¹³For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth
    among the nations,
^(S)as when an olive tree is beaten,
    as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is done.

¹⁷By faith ^(A)Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, ¹⁸of whom it was said, ^(B)“Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” ¹⁹^(C)He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. ²⁰By faith ^(D)Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. ²¹By faith ^(E)Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, ^(F)bowing in worship over the head of his staff. ²²By faith ^(G)Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.

²³By faith ^(H)Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of ^(I)the king's edict. ²⁴By faith Moses, when he was grown up, ^(J)refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, ²⁵^(K)choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy ^(L)the fleeting pleasures of sin. ²⁶^(M)He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to ^(N)the reward. ²⁷By faith he ^(O)left Egypt, ^(P)not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured ^(Q)as seeing him who is invisible. ²⁸By faith ^(R)he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.
