¹⁸ ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.^(A) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’^{(B) 19} In accordance with your great love, forgive^(C) the sin of these people,^(D) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”^(E)

²⁰ The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,^(F) as you asked.

²¹ “‘But the children rebelled against me: They did not follow my decrees, they were not careful to keep my laws,^(A) of which I said, “The person who obeys them will live by them,” and they desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger^(B) against them in the wilderness.^{(C) 22} But I withheld^(D) my hand, and for the sake of my name^(E) I did what would keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.

¹⁷ Yet I looked on them with pity and did not destroy^(A) them or put an end to them in the wilderness.

¹³ “‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled^(A) against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws^(B)—by which the person who obeys them will live—and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths.^(C) So I said I would pour out my wrath^(D) on them and destroy^(E) them in the wilderness.^{(F) 14} But for the sake of my name I did what would keep it from being profaned^(G) in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.^(H)

²⁰ He did evil^(A) in the eyes of the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done.

⁶ And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate^(A) and gracious God, slow to anger,^(B) abounding in love^(C) and faithfulness,^{(D) 7} maintaining love to thousands,^(E) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.^(F) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;^(G) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”^(H)

⁸ Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. ⁹ “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor^(I) in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us.^(J) Although this is a stiff-necked^(K) people, forgive our wickedness and our sin,^(L) and take us as your inheritance.”^(M)

⁸ “‘But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me;^(A) they did not get rid of the vile images they had set their eyes on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt.^(B) So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in Egypt.^{(C) 9} But for the sake of my name, I brought them out of Egypt.^(D) I did it to keep my name from being profaned^(E) in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites.
