Prayer for Deliverance from Enemies

Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me;
    fight against those who fight against me!
Take hold of shield and buckler,
    and rise up to help me!
Draw the spear and javelin
    against my pursuers;
say to my soul,
    ‘I am your salvation.’

Let them be put to shame and dishonour
    who seek after my life.
Let them be turned back and confounded
    who devise evil against me.
Let them be like chaff before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord driving them on.
Let their way be dark and slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

For without cause they hid their net[a] for me;
    without cause they dug a pit[b] for my life.
Let ruin come on them unawares.
And let the net that they hid ensnare them;
    let them fall in it—to their ruin.

Then my soul shall rejoice in the Lord,
    exulting in his deliverance.
10 All my bones shall say,
    ‘O Lord, who is like you?
You deliver the weak
    from those too strong for them,
    the weak and needy from those who despoil them.’

11 Malicious witnesses rise up;
    they ask me about things I do not know.
12 They repay me evil for good;
    my soul is forlorn.
13 But as for me, when they were sick,
    I wore sackcloth;
    I afflicted myself with fasting.
I prayed with head bowed[c] on my bosom,
14     as though I grieved for a friend or a brother;
I went about as one who laments for a mother,
    bowed down and in mourning.

15 But at my stumbling they gathered in glee,
    they gathered together against me;
ruffians whom I did not know
    tore at me without ceasing;
16 they impiously mocked more and more,[d]
    gnashing at me with their teeth.

17 How long, O Lord, will you look on?
    Rescue me from their ravages,
    my life from the lions!
18 Then I will thank you in the great congregation;
    in the mighty throng I will praise you.

19 Do not let my treacherous enemies rejoice over me,
    or those who hate me without cause wink the eye.
20 For they do not speak peace,
    but they conceive deceitful words
    against those who are quiet in the land.
21 They open wide their mouths against me;
    they say, ‘Aha, Aha,
    our eyes have seen it.’

22 You have seen, O Lord; do not be silent!
    O Lord, do not be far from me!
23 Wake up! Bestir yourself for my defence,
    for my cause, my God and my Lord!
24 Vindicate me, O Lord, my God,
    according to your righteousness,
    and do not let them rejoice over me.
25 Do not let them say to themselves,
    ‘Aha, we have our heart’s desire.’
Do not let them say, ‘We have swallowed you[e] up.’

26 Let all those who rejoice at my calamity
    be put to shame and confusion;
let those who exalt themselves against me
    be clothed with shame and dishonour.

27 Let those who desire my vindication
    shout for joy and be glad,
    and say evermore,
‘Great is the Lord,

35 O Lord, fight[b] those who fight with me.
Attack those who attack me.
Grab your small shield and large shield,[c]
and rise up to help me.
Use your spear and lance[d] against[e] those who chase me.
Assure me with these words:[f] “I am your deliverer.”
May those who seek my life be embarrassed and humiliated.
May those who plan to harm me be turned back and ashamed.[g]
May they be[h] like wind-driven chaff,
as the angel of the Lord[i] attacks them.[j]
May their path be[k] dark and slippery,
as the angel of the Lord chases them.
I did not harm them, but they hid a net to catch me
and dug a pit to trap me.[l]
Let destruction take them by surprise.[m]
Let the net they hid catch them.
Let them fall into destruction.[n]
Then I will rejoice in the Lord
and be happy because of his deliverance.[o]
10 With all my strength I will say,[p]
“O Lord, who can compare to you?
You rescue[q] the oppressed from those who try to overpower them,[r]
the oppressed and needy from those who try to rob them.”[s]
11 Violent men perjure themselves,[t]
and falsely accuse me.[u]
12 They repay me evil for the good I have done;[v]
I am overwhelmed with sorrow.[w]
13 When they were sick, I wore sackcloth,[x]

17 O Lord, how long are you going to watch this?
Rescue[ah] me[ai] from their destructive attacks;

I will praise you before a large crowd of people.[al]
19 Do not let those who are my enemies for no reason[am] gloat[an] over me.

26 May those who rejoice at my troubles
    be humiliated and disgraced.
May those who triumph over me
    be covered with shame and dishonor.
27 But give great joy to those who came to my defense.
    Let them continually say, “Great is the Lord,
    who delights in blessing his servant with peace!”
28 Then I will proclaim your justice,
    and I will praise you all day long.

Psalm 14

Denunciation of Godlessness

To the leader. Of David.

Fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’
    They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds;
    there is no one who does good.

The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind
    to see if there are any who are wise,
    who seek after God.

They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse;
    there is no one who does good,
    no, not one.

Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers
    who eat up my people as they eat bread,
    and do not call upon the Lord?

There they shall be in great terror,
    for God is with the company of the righteous.
You would confound the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.

O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!
    When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,
    Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

14 Fools say to themselves,[b] “There is no God.”[c]
They sin and commit evil deeds;[d]
none of them does what is right.[e]
The Lord looks down from heaven[f] at the human race,[g]
to see if there is anyone who is wise[h] and seeks God.[i]
Everyone rejects God;[j]
they are all morally corrupt.[k]
None of them does what is right,[l]
not even one.
All those who behave wickedly[m] do not understand—[n]
those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,
and do not call out to the Lord.
They are absolutely terrified,[o]
for God defends the godly.[p]
You want to humiliate the oppressed,[q]
even though[r] the Lord is their[s] shelter.
I wish the deliverance[t] of Israel would come from Zion!
When the Lord restores the well-being of his people,[u]
may Jacob rejoice,[v]

Psalm 14:5 tn Heb “there they are afraid [with] fear.” The perfect verbal form is probably used in a rhetorical manner; the psalmist describes the future demise of the oppressors as if it were already occurring. The adverb שָׁם (sham, “there”) is also used here for dramatic effect, as the psalmist envisions the wicked standing in fear at a spot that is this vivid in his imagination (BDB 1027 s.v.). The cognate accusative following the verb emphasizes the degree of their terror.
  16. Psalm 14:5 tn Heb “for God is with a godly generation.” The Hebrew noun דּוֹר (dor, “generation”) refers here to the general class of people who are characterized by godliness. See BDB 190 s.v. for other examples where “generation” refers to a class of people.
  17. Psalm 14:6 tn Heb “the counsel of the oppressed you put to shame.” Using a second person plural verb form, the psalmist addresses the wicked. Since the context indicates their attempt to harm the godly will be thwarted, the imperfect should be taken in a subjunctive (cf. NASB, NRSV) rather than an indicative manner (cf. NIV). Here it probably expresses their desire or intent (“want to humiliate”).
  18. Psalm 14:6 tn It is unlikely that כִּי (ki) has a causal force here. The translation assumes a concessive force; another option is to understand an asseverative use (“certainly, indeed”).
  19. Psalm 14:6 tn Heb “his.” The antecedent of the singular pronoun is the singular form עָנִי (ʿani, “oppressed”) in the preceding line. The singular is collective or representative here (and thus translated as plural, “they”).
  20. Psalm 14:7 sn The deliverance of Israel. This refers metonymically to God, the one who lives in Zion and provides deliverance for Israel.
  21. Psalm 14:7 tn Heb “turns with a turning [toward] his people.” The Hebrew term שְׁבוּת (shevut) is apparently a cognate accusative of שׁוּב (shuv).

    on the entire human race;
he looks to see if anyone is truly wise,
    if anyone seeks God.
But no, all have turned away;
    all have become corrupt.[a]
No one does good,
    not a single one!

Will those who do evil never learn?
    They eat up my people like bread
    and wouldn’t think of praying to the Lord.
Terror will grip them,
    for God is with those who obey him.
The wicked frustrate the plans of the oppressed,
    but the Lord will protect his people.

Who will come from Mount Zion to rescue Israel?
    When the Lord restores his people,
    Jacob will shout with joy, and Israel will rejoice.
