⁶ But I am a worm^(A) and not a man,
    scorned by everyone,^(B) despised^(C) by the people.

³ He was despised and rejected by mankind,
    a man of suffering,^(A) and familiar with pain.^(B)
Like one from whom people hide^(C) their faces
    he was despised,^(D) and we held him in low esteem.

⁶ how much less a mortal, who is but a maggot—
    a human being,^(A) who is only a worm!”^(B)

⁷ This is what the Lord says—
    the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel^(A)—
to him who was despised^(B) and abhorred by the nation,
    to the servant of rulers:
“Kings^(C) will see you and stand up,
    princes will see and bow down,^(D)
because of the Lord, who is faithful,^(E)
    the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen^(F) you.”

¹⁴ Do not be afraid,^(A) you worm^(B) Jacob,
    little Israel, do not fear,
for I myself will help^(C) you,” declares the Lord,
    your Redeemer,^(D) the Holy One^(E) of Israel.

⁷ For I endure scorn^(A) for your sake,^(B)
    and shame covers my face.^(C)
8 I am a foreigner to my own family,
    a stranger to my own mother’s children;^(D)
9 for zeal for your house consumes me,^(E)
    and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.^(F)
10 When I weep and fast,^(G)
    I must endure scorn;
¹¹ when I put on sackcloth,^(H)
    people make sport of me.
¹² Those who sit at the gate^(I) mock me,
    and I am the song of the drunkards.^(J)

“Great and marvelous are your deeds,^(D)
    Lord God Almighty.^(E)
Just and true are your ways,^(F)
    King of the nations.^[a]
