⁸ If I go up to the heavens,^(A) you are there;
    if I make my bed^(B) in the depths, you are there.

² Though they dig down to the depths below,^(A)
    from there my hand will take them.
Though they climb up to the heavens above,^(B)
    from there I will bring them down.^(C)
3 Though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel,^(D)
    there I will hunt them down and seize them.^(E)
Though they hide from my eyes at the bottom of the sea,^(F)
    there I will command the serpent^(G) to bite them.^(H)
4 Though they are driven into exile by their enemies,
    there I will command the sword^(I) to slay them.

“I will keep my eye on them
    for harm^(J) and not for good.^(K)”^(L)

“In my distress I called^(A) to the Lord,^(B)
    and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead^(C) I called for help,
    and you listened to my cry.

²¹ “His eyes are on the ways of mortals;^(A)
    he sees their every step.^(B)
22 There is no deep shadow,^(C) no utter darkness,^(D)
    where evildoers can hide.^(E)

⁴ Though you soar like the eagle
    and make your nest^(A) among the stars,
    from there I will bring you down,”^(B)
declares the Lord.^(C)

¹¹ Death and Destruction^[a] lie open before the Lord^(A)—
    how much more do human hearts!^(B)

⁶ The realm of the dead^(A) is naked before God;
    Destruction^[a](B) lies uncovered.^(C)

“‘You were the seal of perfection,
    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.^(B)
13 You were in Eden,^(C)
    the garden of God;^(D)
every precious stone^(E) adorned you:
    carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
    topaz, onyx and jasper,
    lapis lazuli, turquoise^(F) and beryl.^[a]
Your settings and mountings^[b] were made of gold;
    on the day you were created they were prepared.^(G)
14 You were anointed^(H) as a guardian cherub,^(I)
    for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
    you walked among the fiery stones.
¹⁵ You were blameless in your ways
    from the day you were created
    till wickedness was found in you.
¹⁶ Through your widespread trade
    you were filled with violence,^(J)
    and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
    and I expelled you, guardian cherub,^(K)
    from among the fiery stones.
¹⁷ Your heart became proud^(L)
    on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
    because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
    I made a spectacle of you before kings.^(M)
