^19 (A)He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, ^(B)so that they would not be kept alive.

¹³ Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain ^(A)that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and ^(B)they will be afflicted for ^(C)four hundred years.

¹⁷ For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, ^(A)“For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” ¹⁸ So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

¹⁹ You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For ^(B)who can resist his will?”

³⁰ But ^(A)Sihon the king of ^(B)Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the Lord your God ^(C)hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day.

The Eighth Plague: Locusts

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may show these signs of mine among them,

^16 (A)But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so ^(B)that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.

²¹ And the Lord said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the ^(A)miracles that I have put in your power. But ^(B)I will harden his heart, so that he will not let the people go.

God Hears Israel's Groaning

^23 (A)During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel ^(B)groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. ^(C)Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God.

¹⁶ “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.”
