10 He makes springs(A) pour water into the ravines;
    it flows between the mountains.
11 They give water(B) to all the beasts of the field;
    the wild donkeys(C) quench their thirst.
12 The birds of the sky(D) nest by the waters;
    they sing among the branches.(E)
13 He waters the mountains(F) from his upper chambers;(G)
    the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work.(H)
14 He makes grass grow(I) for the cattle,
    and plants for people to cultivate—
    bringing forth food(J) from the earth:
15 wine(K) that gladdens human hearts,
    oil(L) to make their faces shine,
    and bread that sustains(M) their hearts.
16 The trees of the Lord(N) are well watered,
    the cedars of Lebanon(O) that he planted.
17 There the birds(P) make their nests;
    the stork has its home in the junipers.
18 The high mountains belong to the wild goats;(Q)
    the crags are a refuge for the hyrax.(R)

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.(A) He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice(B) against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”(C)

And the Lord(D) said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out(E) to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man(F) comes,(G) will he find faith on the earth?”

Warning to Pay Attention

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.(A) For since the message spoken(B) through angels(C) was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,(D) how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?(E) This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord,(F) was confirmed to us by those who heard him.(G) God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles,(H) and by gifts of the Holy Spirit(I) distributed according to his will.(J)
