His dwelling was with the wild asses, he was fed grass like oxen, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until he learned that the Most High God has sovereignty over the kingdom of mortals and sets over it whomever he will.(B) 22 And you, Belshazzar his son, have not humbled your heart, even though you knew all this!(C) 23 You have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven! The vessels of his temple have been brought in before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have been drinking wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know, but the God in whose power is your very breath and to whom belong all your ways, you have not honored.(D)

24 “So from his presence the hand was sent and this writing was inscribed.(E) 25 And this is the writing that was inscribed: mene,[a] tekel, and parsin. 26 This is the interpretation of the matter: mene: God has numbered the days of[b] your kingdom and brought it to an end;(F) 27 tekel: you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting;(G) 28 peres:[c] your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”

20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride,(A) he was deposed from his royal throne(B) and stripped(C) of his glory.(D) 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign(E) over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.(F)

22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son,[a] have not humbled(G) yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against(H) the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives(I) and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.(J) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life(K) and all your ways.(L) 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.

25 “This is the inscription that was written:

mene, mene, tekel, parsin

26 “Here is what these words mean:

Mene[b]: God has numbered the days(M) of your reign and brought it to an end.(N)

27 Tekel[c]: You have been weighed on the scales(O) and found wanting.(P)

“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
    and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I have removed the boundaries of peoples
    and have plundered their treasures;
    like a bull I have brought down those who sat on thrones.(F)
14 My hand has found, like a nest,
    the wealth of the peoples,
and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken,
    so I have gathered all the earth,
and there was none that moved a wing
    or opened its mouth or chirped.”(G)

15 Shall the ax vaunt itself over the one who wields it
    or the saw magnify itself against the one who handles it?
As if a rod should raise the one who lifts it up,
    or as if a staff should lift the one who is not wood!(H)
16 Therefore the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts,
    will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors,
and under his glory a burning will be kindled
    like the burning of fire.(I)

16 Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    will send a wasting disease(Z) upon his sturdy warriors;(AA)

    like a blazing flame.
