Christ’s Death Fulfills God’s Will(B)

Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:

(C)“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
You had no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—
In the volume of the book it is written of Me—
To do Your will, O God.’ ”

Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, [a]O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 (D)By that will we have been [b]sanctified (E)through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Therefore, when Christ came into the world,(C) he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
    but a body you prepared for me;(D)
with burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you were not pleased.
Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll(E)
    I have come to do your will, my God.’”[a](F)

First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”(G)—though they were offered in accordance with the law. Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”(H) He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy(I) through the sacrifice of the body(J) of Jesus Christ once for all.(K)

11 “To what purpose is the multitude of your (A)sacrifices to Me?”
Says the Lord.
“I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
And the fat of fed cattle.
I do not delight in the blood of bulls,
Or of lambs or goats.

12 “When you come (B)to appear before Me,
Who has required this from your hand,
To trample My courts?
13 Bring no more (C)futile[a] sacrifices;
Incense is an abomination to Me.
The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and (D)the calling of assemblies—
I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.
14 Your (E)New Moons and your (F)appointed feasts
My soul hates;
They are a trouble to Me,
I am weary of bearing them.
15 (G)When you [b]spread out your hands,
I will hide My eyes from you;
(H)Even though you make many prayers,
I will not hear.
Your hands are full of [c]blood.

16 “Wash(I) yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes.
(J)Cease to do evil,
17 Learn to do good;
Seek justice,
Rebuke [d]the oppressor;
[e]Defend the fatherless,
Plead for the widow.

18 “Come now, and let us (K)reason together,”
Says the Lord,
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
(L)They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool.
19 If you are willing and obedient,
You shall eat the good of the land;
20 But if you refuse and rebel,
You shall be devoured by the sword”;

The Degenerate City

21 (N)How the faithful city has become a [f]harlot!
It was full of justice;
Righteousness lodged in it,
But now (O)murderers.
22 (P)Your silver has become dross,
Your wine mixed with water.
23 (Q)Your princes are rebellious,
And (R)companions of thieves;
(S)Everyone loves bribes,
And follows after rewards.
They (T)do not defend the fatherless,
Nor does the cause of the widow come before them.

24 Therefore the Lord says,
The Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,
“Ah, (U)I will [g]rid Myself of My adversaries,
And [h]take vengeance on My enemies.
25 I will turn My hand against you,
And (V)thoroughly[i] purge away your dross,
And take away all your alloy.
26 I will restore your judges (W)as at the first,
And your counselors as at the beginning.
Afterward (X)you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city.”

27 Zion shall be redeemed with justice,
And her [j]penitents with righteousness.
28 The (Y)destruction of transgressors and of sinners shall be together,
And those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed.
29 For [k]they shall be ashamed of the [l]terebinth trees
Which you have desired;
And you shall be embarrassed because of the gardens
Which you have chosen.
30 For you shall be as a terebinth whose leaf fades,
And as a garden that has no water.
31 (Z)The strong shall be as tinder,
And the work of it as a spark;
Both will burn together,
And no one shall (AA)quench them.
