27 So you handed them over to their enemies, who made them suffer. But in their time of trouble they cried to you, and you heard them from heaven. In your great mercy, you sent them liberators who rescued them from their enemies.
28 “But as soon as they were at peace, your people again committed evil in your sight, and once more you let their enemies conquer them. Yet whenever your people turned and cried to you again for help, you listened once more from heaven. In your wonderful mercy, you rescued them many times!
29 “You warned them to return to your Law, but they became proud and obstinate and disobeyed your commands. They did not follow your regulations, by which people will find life if only they obey. They stubbornly turned their backs on you and refused to listen. 30 In your love, you were patient with them for many years. You sent your Spirit, who warned them through the prophets. But still they wouldn’t listen! So once again you allowed the peoples of the land to conquer them. 31 But in your great mercy, you did not destroy them completely or abandon them forever. What a gracious and merciful God you are!
32 “And now, our God, the great and mighty and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of unfailing love, do not let all the hardships we have suffered seem insignificant to you. Great trouble has come upon us and upon our kings and leaders and priests and prophets and ancestors—all of your people—from the days when the kings of Assyria first triumphed over us until now. 33 Every time you punished us you were being just. We have sinned greatly, and you gave us only what we deserved. 34 Our kings, leaders, priests, and ancestors did not obey your Law or listen to the warnings in your commands and laws. 35 Even while they had their own kingdom, they did not serve you, though you showered your goodness on them. You gave them a large, fertile land, but they refused to turn from their wickedness.
36 “So now today we are slaves in the land of plenty that you gave our ancestors for their enjoyment! We are slaves here in this good land. 37 The lush produce of this land piles up in the hands of the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They have power over us and our livestock. We serve them at their pleasure, and we are in great misery.”
The People Agree to Obey
38 [a]The people responded, “In view of all this,[b] we are making a solemn promise and putting it in writing. On this sealed document are the names of our leaders and Levites and priests.”

27 So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies,(A) who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion(B) you gave them deliverers,(C) who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.
28 “But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight.(D) Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion(E) you delivered them(F) time after time.
29 “You warned(G) them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant(H) and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said, ‘The person who obeys them will live by them.’(I) Stubbornly they turned their backs(J) on you, became stiff-necked(K) and refused to listen.(L) 30 For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets.(M) Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.(N) 31 But in your great mercy you did not put an end(O) to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful(P) God.
32 “Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty(Q) and awesome,(R) who keeps his covenant of love,(S) do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes—the hardship(T) that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. 33 In all that has happened to us, you have remained righteous;(U) you have acted faithfully, while we acted wickedly.(V) 34 Our kings,(W) our leaders, our priests and our ancestors(X) did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the statutes you warned them to keep. 35 Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness(Y) to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you(Z) or turn from their evil ways.
36 “But see, we are slaves(AA) today, slaves in the land you gave our ancestors so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces. 37 Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.(AB)
The Agreement of the People
38 “In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement,(AC) putting it in writing,(AD) and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it.”[a]

7 So the Lord burned with anger against Israel, and he turned them over to the Philistines and the Ammonites, 8 who began to oppress them that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites east of the Jordan River in the land of the Amorites (that is, in Gilead). 9 The Ammonites also crossed to the west side of the Jordan and attacked Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim.
The Israelites were in great distress. 10 Finally, they cried out to the Lord for help, saying, “We have sinned against you because we have abandoned you as our God and have served the images of Baal.”
11 The Lord replied, “Did I not rescue you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Maonites? When they oppressed you, you cried out to me for help, and I rescued you. 13 Yet you have abandoned me and served other gods. So I will not rescue you anymore. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! Let them rescue you in your hour of distress!”
15 But the Israelites pleaded with the Lord and said, “We have sinned. Punish us as you see fit, only rescue us today from our enemies.” 16 Then the Israelites put aside their foreign gods and served the Lord. And he was grieved by their misery.
17 At that time the armies of Ammon had gathered for war and were camped in Gilead, and the people of Israel assembled and camped at Mizpah. 18 The leaders of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever attacks the Ammonites first will become ruler over all the people of Gilead.”

For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead,(C) the land of the Amorites. 9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah,(D) Benjamin and Ephraim;(E) Israel was in great distress. 10 Then the Israelites cried(F) out to the Lord, “We have sinned(G) against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”(H)
11 The Lord replied, “When the Egyptians,(I) the Amorites,(J) the Ammonites,(K) the Philistines,(L) 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites(M) and the Maonites[a](N) oppressed you(O) and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands? 13 But you have forsaken(P) me and served other gods,(Q) so I will no longer save you. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save(R) you when you are in trouble!(S)”
15 But the Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best,(T) but please rescue us now.” 16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord.(U) And he could bear Israel’s misery(V) no longer.(W)
17 When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.(X) 18 The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head(Y) over all who live in Gilead.”

6 The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight. So the Lord handed them over to the Midianites for seven years. 2 The Midianites were so cruel that the Israelites made hiding places for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds. 3 Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, marauders from Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east would attack Israel, 4 camping in the land and destroying crops as far away as Gaza. They left the Israelites with nothing to eat, taking all the sheep, goats, cattle, and donkeys. 5 These enemy hordes, coming with their livestock and tents, were as thick as locusts; they arrived on droves of camels too numerous to count. And they stayed until the land was stripped bare. 6 So Israel was reduced to starvation by the Midianites. Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help.
