14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 (A)But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was (B)a prophet (C)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and (D)how our chief priests and (E)rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was (F)the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now (G)the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. (H)They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and (I)when they did not find his body, they came back saying that (J)they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 (K)Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (L)Was it not necessary that (M)the Christ should suffer these things and enter into (N)his glory?” 27 And (O)beginning with (P)Moses and (Q)all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. (R)He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and (S)the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and (T)blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 (U)And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And (V)he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, (W)“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he (X)opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they (Y)found the eleven and (Z)those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and (AA)has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and (AB)how he was known to them in (AC)the breaking of the bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 As they were talking about these things, (AD)Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were (AE)startled and (AF)frightened and (AG)thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. (AH)Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, (AI)he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved (AJ)for joy and were marveling, (AK)he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[a] 43 and he took it and ate before them.

44 Then he said to them, (AL)“These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, (AM)that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then (AN)he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus (AO)it is written, (AP)that the Christ should suffer and on the third day (AQ)rise from the dead, 47 and that (AR)repentance for[b] the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed (AS)in his name (AT)to all nations, (AU)beginning from Jerusalem. 48 (AV)You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending (AW)the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you (AX)are clothed with (AY)power (AZ)from on high.”

50 And (BA)he led them out as far as (BB)Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, (BC)he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they (BD)worshiped him and (BE)returned to Jerusalem (BF)with great joy, 53 and (BG)were continually in the temple (BH)blessing God.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas,(C) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19 “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,”(D) they replied. “He was a prophet,(E) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers(F) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.(G) And what is more, it is the third day(H) since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us.(I) They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”(J)

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”(K) 27 And beginning with Moses(L) and all the Prophets,(M) he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.(N)

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it(O) and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him,(P) and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us(Q) while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures(R) to us?”

33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord(S) has risen and has appeared to Simon.”(T) 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.(U)

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(V)

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.(W) 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see;(X) a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.(Y)

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:(Z) Everything must be fulfilled(AA) that is written about me in the Law of Moses,(AB) the Prophets(AC) and the Psalms.”(AD)

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer(AE) and rise from the dead on the third day,(AF) 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name(AG) to all nations,(AH) beginning at Jerusalem.(AI) 48 You are witnesses(AJ) of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised;(AK) but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension of Jesus
