35 “It was this Moses whom they rejected when they said, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ and whom God now sent as both ruler and liberator through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.(A) 36 He led them out, having performed wonders and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.(B) 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up a prophet for you from your own people as he raised me up.’(C) 38 He is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai and with our ancestors, and he received living oracles to give to us.(D) 39 Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him; instead, they pushed him aside, and in their hearts they turned back to Egypt, 40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make gods for us who will lead the way for us; as for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’(E) 41 At that time they made a calf, offered a sacrifice to the idol, and reveled in the works of their hands.(F) 42 But God turned away from them and handed them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:

‘Did you offer to me slain victims and sacrifices
forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?(G)
43 No; you took along the tent of Moloch
and the star of your god Rephan,
        the images that you made to worship;
so I will remove you beyond Babylon.’

44 “Our ancestors had the tent of testimony in the wilderness, as God[a] directed when he spoke to Moses, ordering him to make it according to the pattern he had seen.(H) 45 Our ancestors in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the peoples whom God drove out before our ancestors. And it was there until the time of David,(I) 46 who found favor with God and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the house of Jacob.[b](J) 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him. 48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with human hands;[c] as the prophet says,(K)

49 ‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,
or what is the place of my rest?(L)
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’

51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are forever opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do.(M) 52 Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers.(N) 53 You are the ones who received the law as ordained by angels, and yet you have not kept it.”(O)

The Stoning of Stephen

54 When they heard these things, they became enraged and ground their teeth at Stephen.[d] 55 But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(P) 56 “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”(Q) 57 But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. 58 Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him, and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.(R) 59 While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”(S) 60 Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died.[e](T)

35 “This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’(A) He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt(B) and performed wonders and signs(C) in Egypt, at the Red Sea(D) and for forty years in the wilderness.(E)

37 “This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’[a](F) 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel(G) who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors;(H) and he received living words(I) to pass on to us.(J)

39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(K) 40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’[b](L) 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.(M) 42 But God turned away from them(N) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.(O) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:

“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43 You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
and the star of your god Rephan,
the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile’[c](P) beyond Babylon.

44 “Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law(Q) with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.(R) 45 After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them.(S) It remained in the land until the time of David,(T) 46 who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.[d](U) 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.(V)

48 “However, the Most High(W) does not live in houses made by human hands.(X) As the prophet says:

49 “‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.(Y)
What kind of house will you build for me?
says the Lord.
Or where will my resting place be?
50 Has not my hand made all these things?’[e](Z)

51 “You stiff-necked people!(AA) Your hearts(AB) and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute?(AC) They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him(AD) 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels(AE) but have not obeyed it.”

The Stoning of Stephen

54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious(AF) and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,(AG) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(AH) 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open(AI) and the Son of Man(AJ) standing at the right hand of God.”

57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city(AK) and began to stone him.(AL) Meanwhile, the witnesses(AM) laid their coats(AN) at the feet of a young man named Saul.(AO)

59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”(AP) 60 Then he fell on his knees(AQ) and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”(AR) When he had said this, he fell asleep.(AS)

Moses alone shall come near the Lord, but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him.”
