Los peligros de ser fiador
6 Hijo mío, si te has hecho fiador de tu amigo,
o te has hecho responsable de la deuda de un extraño,
2 te comprometiste al dar tu palabra,
tus propias palabras te atraparon.
3 Como quedaste en manos de otro, hijo mío,
haz esto para librarte:
corre, humíllate y acosa a tu semejante.
4 No des sueño a tus ojos,
ni te des un respiro;
5 escapa de esa trampa como un venado escapa de su cazador,
como un ave escapa de su jaula.
Los peligros de la pereza
6 Perezoso, sigue el ejemplo de la hormiga;
mira lo que hace y aprende de ella.
7 La hormiga no tiene quién la mande,
ni jefe ni líder.
8 Sin embargo, durante el verano reúne todo su alimento;
guarda su comida en la cosecha.
9 Perezoso, ¿cuánto tiempo permanecerás allí acostado?
¿Cuándo te levantarás?
10 El perezoso dice: «Necesito una siesta,
me acostaré por un rato».
11 Así te llegará la pobreza,
como si un ladrón hubiera venido y se hubiera llevado todo.
No te busques problemas
12 El perverso y despreciable anda siempre
diciendo mentiras;
13 guiña los ojos, hace señas con los pies
y señala con los dedos.
14 Todo el tiempo está planeando hacer el mal
y arma líos en todas partes.
15 Pero de repente, el desastre vendrá sobre él
y será destruido sin remedio.
Esto no le gusta al Señor
16 El SEÑOR odia seis cosas;
mejor dicho, hay siete que él detesta:
17 los ojos orgullosos,
la lengua mentirosa,
las manos que matan gente inocente,
18 el corazón que planea hacer el mal,
los pies que corren a hacer maldades,
19 el falso testigo que dice mentiras
y el que causa problemas entre hermanos.
Advertencia contra la inmoralidad sexual
20 Hijo mío, escucha el mandamiento de tu papá
y no ignores la enseñanza de tu mamá,
21 átalos a tu cuello,
escríbelos en tu corazón,
22 te guiarán por donde quiera que vayas,
te cuidarán cuando duermas
y te hablarán cuando despiertes.
23 El mandamiento es una lámpara,
la enseñanza es una luz
y la reprensión que disciplina
es el camino que lleva a la vida.
24 Te protegerán de la mujer mala,
de la mujer de otro y de su lengua que seduce.
25 No dejes que su belleza haga que tu corazón arda en deseos por ella;
no te dejes cautivar por sus miradas.
26 La prostituta puede costar una porción de pan,
pero la mujer de otro hombre puede costarte la vida.
27 ¿Puede alguien echarse fuego en el pecho
sin quemarse la ropa?
28 ¿Caminar sobre las brasas
sin quemarse los pies?
29 Pues lo mismo sucede con quien se acuesta con la mujer de otro,
no se librará de sufrir las consecuencias.
30 No se desprecia a un ladrón que roba
para calmar el hambre,
31 pero si lo atrapan, lo harán pagar siete veces lo que se robó,
aunque tenga que dar todo lo que tiene.
32 Pero el que se acuesta con la mujer de otro es un torpe,
se destruye a sí mismo.
33 Tendrá que soportar golpes y vergüenza,
y no podrá borrar su deshonor.
34 Es que el hombre celoso es como un fuego,
y no perdonará en el momento de la venganza;
35 no aceptará ningún pago,
ni se contentará con muchos regalos.

6 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
12 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
14 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life.
27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

Dangerous Promises
6 My son, (A)if you become [a]surety for your friend,
If you have [b]shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
2 You are snared by the words of your mouth;
You are taken by the words of your mouth.
3 So do this, my son, and deliver yourself;
For you have come into the hand of your friend:
Go and humble yourself;
Plead with your friend.
4 (B)Give no sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids.
5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
And like a bird from the hand of the [c]fowler.
The Folly of Indolence
6 (C)Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,
7 Which, having no [d]captain,
Overseer or ruler,
8 Provides her [e]supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest.
9 (D)How long will you [f]slumber, O sluggard?
When will you rise from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep—

And your need like an armed man.
The Wicked Man
12 A worthless person, a wicked man,
Walks with a perverse mouth;
13 (F)He winks with his eyes,
He [g]shuffles his feet,
He points with his fingers;
14 Perversity is in his heart,
(G)He devises evil continually,
(H)He sows discord.
15 Therefore his calamity shall come (I)suddenly;
Suddenly he shall (J)be broken (K)without remedy.
16 These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to [h]Him:
17 (L)A[i] proud look,
(M)A lying tongue,
(N)Hands that shed innocent blood,
18 (O)A heart that devises wicked plans,

Beware of Adultery
20 (S)My son, keep your father’s command,
And do not forsake the law of your mother.
21 (T)Bind them continually upon your heart;
Tie them around your neck.
22 (U)When you roam, [j]they will lead you;
When you sleep, (V)they will keep you;
And when you awake, they will speak with you.
23 (W)For the commandment is a lamp,
And the law a light;
Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
24 (X)To keep you from the evil woman,
From the flattering tongue of a seductress.
25 (Y)Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.
26 For (Z)by means of a harlot
A man is reduced to a crust of bread;
(AA)And [k]an adulteress will (AB)prey upon his precious life.
27 Can a man take fire to his bosom,
And his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one walk on hot coals,
And his feet not be seared?
29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.
30 People do not despise a thief
If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.
31 Yet when he is found, (AC)he must restore sevenfold;
He may have to give up all the substance of his house.
32 Whoever commits adultery with a woman (AD)lacks understanding;
He who does so destroys his own soul.
33 Wounds and dishonor he will get,
And his reproach will not be wiped away.

Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.

Practical Warnings
6 My son, if you have put up (A)security for your neighbor,
have (B)given your pledge for a stranger,
2 if you are (C)snared in the words of your mouth,
caught in the words of your mouth,
3 then do this, my son, and save yourself,
for you have come into the hand of your neighbor:
go, hasten,[a] and (D)plead urgently with your neighbor.
4 (E)Give your eyes no sleep
and your eyelids no slumber;
5 save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,[b]
(F)like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 (G)Go to (H)the ant, O (I)sluggard;
consider her ways, and (J)be wise.

(L)officer, or ruler,

(AR)when you lie down, they will (AS)watch over you;
and when you awake, they will talk with you.
23 For the commandment is (AT)a lamp and the teaching a light,
and the (AU)reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
24 to preserve you from the evil woman,[e]
from the smooth tongue of (AV)the adulteress.[f]
25 (AW)Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
and do not let her capture you with her (AX)eyelashes;
