Exhortación a un rey
31 Palabras proféticas del rey Lemuel, que su madre le enseñó.
2 ¿Qué puedo decirte, hijo mío?
¿Qué puedo decirte, hijo de mis entrañas?
¿Qué puedo decirte, respuesta a mis oraciones?
3 Que no entregues tu vigor a las mujeres,
ni vayas por caminos que destruyen a los reyes.
4 Lemuel, hijo mío,
no está bien que los reyes beban vino,
ni que los príncipes beban sidra;
5 no sea que por beber se olviden de la ley,
y tuerzan el derecho de todos los afligidos.
6 Sea la sidra para el que desfallece,
y el vino para los de ánimo amargado.
7 ¡Que beban y se olviden de sus carencias!
¡Que no se acuerden más de su miseria!
8 Habla en lugar de los que no pueden hablar;
¡defiende a todos los desvalidos!
9 Habla en su lugar, y hazles justicia;
¡defiende a los pobres y menesterosos!
Elogio a la esposa ejemplar
10 Mujer ejemplar, ¿quién dará con ella?
Su valor excede al de las piedras preciosas.
11 Su esposo confía en ella de todo corazón,
y por ella no carece de ganancias.
12 Siempre lo trata bien, nunca mal,
todos los días de su vida.
13 Sale en busca de lana y de lino,
y afanosa los trabaja con sus manos.
14 Se asemeja a una nave de mercaderes,
que de muy lejos trae sus provisiones.
15 Aun durante la noche se levanta
para dar de comer a su familia
y asignar a las criadas sus deberes.
16 Pondera el valor de un terreno, y lo compra,
y con lo que gana planta un viñedo.
17 Saca fuerzas de flaqueza,
y con ahínco se dispone a trabajar.
18 Está atenta a la buena marcha de su negocio,
y por la noche mantiene su lámpara encendida.
19 Sabe cómo manejar el huso,
y no le es ajeno manejar la rueca.
20 Sabe ayudar a los pobres,
y tender la mano a los menesterosos.
21 Cuando nieva, no teme por su familia,
pues todos ellos visten ropas dobles.
22 Ella misma se hace tapices,
y se viste de lino fino y de púrpura.
23 Su esposo es bien conocido en la ciudad,
y es parte del consejo local de ancianos.
24 Las telas que hace, las vende,
y provee a los comerciantes con cinturones.
25 Se reviste de fuerza y de honra,
y no le preocupa lo que pueda venir.
26 Habla siempre con sabiduría,
y su lengua se rige por la ley del amor.
27 Siempre atenta a la marcha de su hogar,
nunca come un pan que no se haya ganado.
28 Sus hijos se levantan y la llaman dichosa;
también su esposo la congratula:
29 «Muchas mujeres han hecho el bien,
pero tú las sobrepasas a todas.»
30 La belleza es engañosa, y hueca la hermosura,
pero la mujer que teme al Señor será alabada.
31 ¡Reconózcase lo que ha hecho con sus manos!
¡Sea alabada ante todos por sus logros!

Sayings of King Lemuel
31 The sayings(A) of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.
2 Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!(B)
3 Do not spend your strength[a] on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings.(C)
4 It is not for kings, Lemuel—
it is not for kings to drink wine,(D)
not for rulers to crave beer,
5 lest they drink(E) and forget what has been decreed,(F)
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6 Let beer be for those who are perishing,
wine(G) for those who are in anguish!
7 Let them drink(H) and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.
8 Speak(I) up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.(J)
Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character
10 [b]A wife of noble character(K) who can find?(L)
She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband(M) has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.(N)
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.(O)
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.(P)
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders(Q) of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.(R)
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise(S) at the city gate.
