Proverbs 23
Wycliffe Bible
23 When thou sittest to eat with the prince, perceive thou diligently what things be set before thy face,
2 and set thou a coulter in thy throat. If nevertheless thou hast power on thy soul, (and set thou a knife at thy own throat, if thou hast not power over thy self.)
3 desire thou not of his meats, in whom is the bread of lying. (Do not thou desire any of his food, for he is not what he seemeth to be/for this is not what it seemeth to be.)
4 Do not thou travail to be made rich, but set thou measure to thy prudence. (Do not thou labour to be made rich, but set thou a limit to what thou can achieve.)
5 Raise not thine eyes to riches, which thou mayest not have; for those shall make to themselves pens, as of an eagle, and they shall fly into heaven. (Raise not up thine eyes to riches, which thou cannot hold onto; for they shall make wings for themselves, like an eagle, and they shall fly away into the heavens.)
6 Eat thou not with an envious man, and desire thou not his meats; (Do not thou eat with the envious, and do not thou desire his food;)
7 for at the likeness of a false diviner, and of a conjecturer, that is, (an) expounder of dreams, he guesseth that, that he knoweth not. He shall say to thee, Eat thou and drink; and his soul is not with thee (but his heart is not for thee/but his heart is not with thee).
8 Thou shalt spew out the meat, which thou hast eaten; and thou shalt lose thy fair words (and thy flattery shall have been wasted).
9 Speak thou not in the ears of unwise men (Speak thou not in the ears of the unwise); for they shall despise the teaching of thy speech.
10 Touch thou not the terms, (or the boundary stones, of the property) of little children; and enter thou not into the field of fatherless and motherless children.
11 For the neighbour of them is strong, and he shall deem their cause against thee. (For their Friend is strong, and he shall judge their case against thee.)
12 Thine heart enter to teaching, and thine ears to the words of knowing. (Let thy heart draw close to instruction, and thy ears to words of knowledge.)
13 Do not thou withdraw chastising, (or discipline,) from a child; for though thou smitest him with a rod, he shall not die.
14 Thou shalt smite him with a rod, and thou shalt deliver his soul from hell. (Thou shalt strike him with a rod, and so thou shalt rescue his soul from Sheol, or from the land of the dead/from hell itself.)
15 My son, if thy soul is wise, mine heart shall have joy with thee; (My son, if thou be wise, my heart shall have joy over thee;)
16 and my reins shall make full out joy, when thy lips speak rightful thing(s).
17 (Let) Thine heart follow not sinners; but be thou in the dread of the Lord all day (but be thou in the fear of the Lord/with reverence for the Lord all day long).
18 For thou shalt have hope at the last, and thine abiding shall not be done away.
19 My son, hear thou, and be wise, and (ad)dress thy soul in the way (and direct thy soul to the right way).
20 Do not thou be in the feasts of drinkers, neither in the oft eatings of them, that bring together fleshes to eat. (Do not thou be at the feasts of drinkers, nor at the oft eatings of those who bring much meat to eat.)
21 For men giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels together, shall be wasted, and napping shall be clothed with clothes rent. (For those giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels to each other, shall be wasted, or destroyed, and their napping shall eventually clothe them with torn clothes.)
22 Hear thy father, that begat thee (Listen to thy father, who begat thee); and despise not thy mother, when she is eld.
23 Buy thou truth, and do not thou sell (off) wisdom, and doctrine, and understanding.
24 The father of a just man joyeth full out with joy; he that begat a wise man, shall be glad in him. (The father of a righteous person rejoiceth with great joy; he who begat someone who is wise, shall take much pleasure, or pride, in him.)
25 Thy father and thy mother have joy, and he that begat thee, make full out joy. (So let thy father and thy mother have joy over thee, and let she who bare thee, rejoice.)
26 My son, give thine heart to me, and thine eyes keep my ways.
27 For a whore is a deep ditch, and an alien woman, is a strait pit. (For a whore is a deep ditch, and a woman whom thou hath been intimate with, but who is not thy wife, is a narrow pit.)
28 She setteth ambush in the way, as a thief (She setteth ambush on the way, like a thief); and shall add despisers in men, that is, (she) shall multiply (the) despisers of God among men.
29 To whom is woe? to whose father is woe? to whom be chidings? (to whom be arguments?) to whom be ditches? to whom be wounds without cause? to whom is putting out of eyes?
30 Whether not to them, that dwell in wine, and study to drink [up] all of (the) cups? (Whether not to those, who live in wine, and endeavour to drink up every last drop from the cup?)
31 Behold thou not [the] wine (Look thou not upon the wine), when it sparkleth, when the colour thereof shineth in a glass cup. It entereth sweetly,
32 but at the last it shall bite as an adder, and as a cockatrice it shall shed abroad venoms. (but in the end, it shall bite like a serpent, and it shall sting, with its venom, like a cockatrice.)
33 Thine eyes shall see strange, (or unknown,) women, and thy heart shall speak wayward things.
34 And thou shalt be as a man sleeping in the midst of the sea, and as a governor asleeped, when the steer(ing), either the instrument of governance, is lost.
35 And thou shalt say, They beat me, but I had not sorrow; they drew me, and I feeled not; when shall I wake out, and I shall find wines again? (when shall I wake up, and I can drink more wine again?)

23 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which [is] before thee,
2 And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou [art] a man of appetite.
3 Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it [is] lying food.
4 Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.
5 For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.
6 Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,
7 For as he hath thought in his soul, so [is] he, `Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart [is] not with thee.
8 Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that [are] sweet.
9 In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.
10 Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,
11 For their Redeemer [is] strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.
12 Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.
14 Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest.
15 My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,
16 And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.
17 Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But -- in the fear of Jehovah all the day.
18 For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,
20 Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,
21 For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.
22 Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.
23 Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,
24 The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.
25 Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.
26 Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.
27 For a harlot [is] a deep ditch, And a strange woman [is] a strait pit.
28 She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.
29 Who hath wo? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?
30 Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.
31 See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.
32 Its latter end -- as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.
33 Thine eyes see strange women, And thy heart speaketh perverse things.
34 And thou hast been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.
35 `They smote me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake -- I seek it yet again!'

23 Wanneer u bij een hooggeplaatste aan tafel zit, let dan op wat u wordt voorgezet.
2 Beheers u als u een liefhebber van lekker eten bent,
3 laat u niet het hoofd op hol brengen door dat heerlijke eten, want weelde is maar al te verlokkelijk.
4 Doe geen moeite rijk te worden, u kunt uw gaven beter voor iets anders gebruiken.
5 Staar u niet blind op rijkdom, die in feite niets voorstelt. Rijkdom is ook maar vergankelijk. Zoals een vogel opvliegt, kan het weer verdwijnen.
6 Eet niet bij een vrekkig en jaloers mens, staar u niet blind op al zijn heerlijke eten.
7 Hij houdt zijn gedachten voor zichzelf en al nodigt hij u vriendelijk uit, in zijn hart meent hij dat niet.
8 U zou er spijt van krijgen dat u daar gegeten hebt en uw vriendelijke woorden zouden zijn verspild.
9 Praat niet tegen een dwaas, want hij heeft geen enkele waardering voor de wijsheid van uw woorden.
10 Houd u aan de morele grenzen die al van oudsher gelden en blijf van de bezittingen van wezen af.
11 Want God, hun Verlosser, is sterk, Hij zal hen tegen u in bescherming nemen.
12 Open uw hart voor wijze lessen en spits uw oren als er verstandig wordt gesproken.
13 Aarzel niet een jongen te straffen, van een pak slaag gaat hij echt niet dood.
14 Door hem af en toe te straffen kunt u hem voor de ondergang behoeden.
15 Mijn zoon! Reken maar dat ik blij ben als ik zie dat je je verstandig gedraagt.
16 Als ik je oprechte dingen hoor zeggen, zindert de blijdschap door mij heen.
17 Wind je niet op over zondaars, leef voortdurend in eerbiedig ontzag voor de Here.
18 Want je kunt er zeker van zijn dat je een beloning wacht, je komt niet bedrogen uit als je op God vertrouwt.
19 Luister goed, mijn jongen! Wees verstandig en richt je volledig op Gods wil voor je leven.
20 Houd je afzijdig van drinkebroers en veelvraten,
21 want dat soort mensen staat armoede te wachten, hun roes brengt hen tot de bedelstaf.
22 Luister naar je vader die je heeft verwekt, en kijk niet op je moeder neer, wanneer zij oud geworden is.
23 Maak je de waarheid eigen tot elke prijs en houd haar, koste wat het kost, vast. Hetzelfde geldt voor wijsheid, onderwijzing en verstand.
24 Een rechtvaardige zoon doet zijn vader enorm veel plezier. Wie een wijze zoon krijgt, mag blij en dankbaar zijn.
25 Maak je vader blij en ook je moeder die jou ter wereld bracht.
26 Mijn zoon, stel je hart voor mij open en let goed op hoe ik leef.
27 Want een hoer is een diepe, verraderlijke gracht en een vrouw die niet van jou is, is een smalle put waaruit geen ontsnapping mogelijk is.
28 Als een rover loert zij rond en zij is de oorzaak dat velen God ontrouw worden.
29 Wie klagen steen en been? Wie maken doorlopend ruzie en raken zonder reden verwond? Wie bekijken de wereld door roodomrande ogen?
30 Dat zijn de mensen die zich tot in de kleine uurtjes te buiten gaan aan wijn en sterke drank.
31 Verlang niet naar de wijn, die rood fonkelt en heerlijk geurt in de beker, die drinkt wel heel gemakkelijk,
32 maar bijt uiteindelijk als een slang en spuwt gif als een adder.
33 Dan ga je kijken naar dingen die niet van jou zijn, en je mond zal vuile taal spuien.
34 Je voelt je dan alsof je op een schip bent en alles draait om je heen.
35 Je zult zeggen: ‘Ze hebben me geslagen en op me losgebeukt zonder dat ik iets merkte. Wanneer word ik weer wakker? Ik ben hard toe aan een slokje wijn.’

23 你若与官长同席，
要注意面对的是谁。
2 如果你是贪吃的人，
就要节制食欲[a]；
3 不可贪恋他的美食，
这美食是圈套。
4 别为钱财耗尽心力，
要明智，适可而止。
5 钱财眨眼之间消逝无踪，
它必长出翅膀如鹰飞去。
6 不要吃吝啬人的饭，
不可贪图他的美味。
7 因为他总是精于算计，
嘴上说“请吃，请喝”，
心里却另有盘算。
8 你必呕出所吃的那点饭，
你说的美言都必枉费。
9 不要和愚人说话，
他必藐视你的智言。
10 不可挪移古时的界石，
不可侵占孤儿的田地。
11 因他们的救赎主强大，
祂必对付你，替他们申冤。
12 你要专心接受教诲，
侧耳倾听智言。
13 不要疏于管教孩子，
杖责不会使他毙命，
14 杖责能救他脱离死亡。
15 孩子啊，
你若心里有智慧，
我心里也会欢喜。
16 你的口若说正直的话，
我的内心也欢畅不已。
17 不要心里羡慕罪人，
要终日敬畏耶和华。
18 这样，你必前途光明，
你的盼望不会幻灭。
19 孩子啊，听我的话，
要有智慧，心守正道。
20 不要结交酒肉朋友，
21 因为好酒贪吃者必穷困，
贪睡的人必穿破衣烂衫。
22 要听从生养你的父亲，
不可轻视年老的母亲。
23 要买真理、智慧、教诲和悟性，
不可卖掉。
24 义人的父亲喜乐无限，

25 你要使父母快乐，
