Proverbs 22

22 ^(A)A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
    and favor is better than silver or gold.
²^(B)The rich and the poor meet together;
    the Lord is ^(C)the Maker of them all.
³^(D)The prudent sees danger and hides himself,
    but the simple go on and suffer for it.
⁴The reward for humility and fear of the Lord
    is ^(E)riches and honor and life.^[a]
⁵^(F)Thorns and snares are in the way of the crooked;
    whoever ^(G)guards his soul will keep far from them.
⁶^(H)Train up a child in the way he should go;
    even when he is old he will not depart from it.
⁷^(I)The rich rules over the poor,
    and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
⁸Whoever ^(J)sows injustice will reap calamity,
    and ^(K)the rod of his fury will fail.
⁹^(L)Whoever has a bountiful^[b] eye will be blessed,
    for he ^(M)shares his bread with the poor.
¹⁰^(N)Drive out a scoffer, ^(O)and strife will go out,
    and ^(P)quarreling and abuse will cease.
¹¹He who ^(Q)loves purity of heart,
    and whose ^(R)speech is gracious, ^(S)will have the king as his friend.
¹²The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge,
    but he ^(T)overthrows the words of the traitor.
¹³^(U)The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside!
    I shall be killed in the streets!”
¹⁴The mouth of ^(V)forbidden^[c] women is ^(W)a deep pit;
    ^(X)he with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it.
¹⁵Folly is bound up in the heart of a child,
    but ^(Y)the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
¹⁶Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth,
    or gives to the rich, ^(Z)will only come to poverty.

Words of the Wise

¹⁷^(AA)Incline your ear, and hear ^(AB)the words of the wise,
    ^(AC)and apply your heart to my knowledge,
¹⁸for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
    if all of them are ready on your lips.
¹⁹That your trust may be in the Lord,
    I have made them known to you today, even to you.
²⁰Have I not written for you ^(AD)thirty sayings
    of counsel and knowledge,
²¹to ^(AE)make you know what is right and true,
    that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?

²²^(AF)Do not rob the poor, because he is poor,
    or ^(AG)crush the afflicted at ^(AH)the gate,
²³for ^(AI)the Lord will plead their cause
    and rob of life those who rob them.
²⁴Make no friendship with a man given to anger,
    nor go with a wrathful man,
²⁵lest you learn his ways
    and entangle yourself in a snare.
²⁶Be not one of those who ^(AJ)give pledges,
    who put up security for debts.
²⁷If you have nothing with which to pay,
    why should ^(AK)your bed be taken from under you?
²⁸Do not move the ancient ^(AL)landmark
    that your fathers have set.
²⁹Do you see a man skillful in his work?
    He will ^(AM)stand before kings;
    he will not stand before obscure men.

Israel's Sin and the Servant's Obedience

50 Thus says the Lord:
“Where is ^(A)your mother's certificate of divorce,
    with which ^(B)I sent her away?
Or ^(C)which of my creditors is it
    to whom I have sold you?
^(D)Behold, for your iniquities you were sold,
    and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.
²^(E)Why, when I came, was there no man;
    why, when I called, was there no one to answer?
^(F)Is my hand shortened, that it cannot redeem?
    Or have I no power to deliver?
^(G)Behold, by my rebuke ^(H)I dry up the sea,
    ^(I)I make the rivers a desert;
^(J)their fish stink for lack of water
    and die of thirst.
³^(K)I clothe the heavens with blackness
    and make sackcloth their covering.”

⁴The Lord God has given ^(L)me
    the tongue of those who are taught,
that ^(M)I may know how to sustain with a word
    ^(N)him who is weary.
Morning by morning he awakens;
    he awakens my ear
    to hear as those who are taught.
⁵^(O)The Lord God has opened my ear,
    ^(P)and I was not rebellious;
    I turned not backward.
⁶^(Q)I gave my back to those who strike,
    and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard;
I hid not my face
    from disgrace and spitting.

⁷But the Lord God helps me;
    therefore I have not been disgraced;
^(R)therefore I have set my face like a flint,
    and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
⁸    ^(S)He who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
    Let us stand up together.
Who is my adversary?
    Let him come near to me.
⁹^(T)Behold, the Lord God helps me;
    who will declare me guilty?
Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment;
    the moth will eat them up.

¹⁰Who among you fears the Lord
    and obeys ^(U)the voice of his servant?
^(V)Let him who walks in darkness
    and has no light
trust in the name of the Lord
    and rely on his God.
¹¹Behold, all you who kindle a fire,
    who equip yourselves with burning torches!
Walk by the light of your fire,
    and by the torches that you have kindled!
^(W)This you have from my hand:
    you shall lie down in torment.

The Lord's Comfort for Zion

51 ^(X)“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness,
    you who seek the Lord:
look to the rock from which you were hewn,
    and to the quarry from which you were dug.
²Look to Abraham your father
    and to Sarah who bore you;
for ^(Y)he was but one when I called him,
    that I might bless him and multiply him.
³For the Lord ^(Z)comforts Zion;
    he comforts all her waste places
and makes her wilderness like ^(AA)Eden,
    her desert like ^(AB)the garden of the Lord;
^(AC)joy and gladness will be found in her,
    thanksgiving and the voice of song.

⁴^(AD)“Give attention to me, my people,
    and give ear to me, my nation;
^(AE)for a law^[a] will go out from me,
    and I will set my justice for a light to the peoples.
⁵^(AF)My righteousness draws near,
    my salvation has gone out,
    and my arms will judge the peoples;
^(AG)the coastlands hope for me,
    and for my arm they wait.
⁶^(AH)Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
    and look at the earth beneath;
^(AI)for the heavens vanish like smoke,
    the earth will wear out like a garment,
    and they who dwell in it will die in like manner;^[b]
^(AJ)but my salvation will be forever,
    and my righteousness will never be dismayed.

⁷^(AK)“Listen to me, you who know righteousness,
    the people ^(AL)in whose heart is my law;
^(AM)fear not the reproach of man,
    nor be dismayed at their revilings.
⁸^(AN)For the moth will eat them up like a garment,
    and the worm will eat them like wool,
^(AO)but my righteousness will be forever,
    and my salvation to all generations.”

⁹^(AP)Awake, awake, ^(AQ)put on strength,
    O ^(AR)arm of the Lord;
awake, ^(AS)as in days of old,
    the generations of long ago.
Was it not you who cut ^(AT)Rahab in pieces,
    who pierced ^(AU)the dragon?
¹⁰^(AV)Was it not you who dried up the sea,
    the waters of the great deep,
who made the depths of the sea a way
    for the redeemed to pass over?
¹¹^(AW)And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
    and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
    they shall obtain gladness and joy,
    and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

¹²“I, I am he ^(AX)who comforts you;
    who are you that you are afraid of ^(AY)man who dies,
    of the son of man who is made ^(AZ)like grass,
¹³and have forgotten the Lord, your Maker,
    ^(BA)who stretched out the heavens
    and ^(BB)laid the foundations of the earth,
and you fear continually all the day
    because of the wrath of ^(BC)the oppressor,
when he sets himself to destroy?
    And where is the wrath of ^(BD)the oppressor?
¹⁴^(BE)He who is bowed down shall speedily be released;
    he shall not die and go down ^(BF)to the pit,
    neither shall his bread be lacking.
¹⁵I am the Lord your God,
    ^(BG)who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    the Lord of hosts is his name.
¹⁶^(BH)And I have put my words in your mouth
    ^(BI)and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
^(BJ)establishing^[c] the heavens
    and ^(BK)laying the foundations of the earth,
    and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’”

¹⁷^(BL)Wake yourself, wake yourself,
    stand up, O Jerusalem,
^(BM)you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup of his wrath,
who have drunk to the dregs
    the bowl, ^(BN)the cup of staggering.
¹⁸^(BO)There is none to guide her
    among all the sons she has borne;
there is none to take her by the hand
    among all the sons she has brought up.
¹⁹^(BP)These two things have happened to you—
    who will console you?—
devastation and destruction, famine and sword;
    who will comfort you?^[d]
²⁰^(BQ)Your sons have fainted;
    they lie at the head of every street
    like an ^(BR)antelope ^(BS)in a net;
they are full of the wrath of the Lord,
    the rebuke of your God.

²¹^(BT)Therefore hear this, you who are afflicted,
    who are drunk, but not with wine:
²²Thus says your Lord, the Lord,
    your God ^(BU)who pleads the cause of his people:
“Behold, I have taken from your hand ^(BV)the cup of staggering;
the bowl of my wrath you shall drink no more;
²³^(BW)and I will put it into the hand of your tormentors,
    ^(BX)who have said to you,
    ‘Bow down, that we may pass over’;
and ^(BY)you have made your back like the ground
    and like the street for them to pass over.”

James 5

Warning to the Rich

5 Come now, ^(A)you rich, weep and howl for the ^(B)miseries that are coming upon you. ²^(C)Your riches have rotted and ^(D)your garments are moth-eaten. ³Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. ^(E)You have laid up treasure ^(F)in the last days. ⁴Behold, ^(G)the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and ^(H)the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of ^(I)the Lord of hosts. ⁵^(J)You have lived on the earth in luxury and ^(K)in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in ^(L)a day of slaughter. ⁶You have condemned and ^(M)murdered ^(N)the righteous person. He does not resist you.

Patience in Suffering

⁷Be patient, therefore, brothers,^[a] until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives ^(O)the early and the late rains. ⁸You also, be patient. ^(P)Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord ^(Q)is at hand. ⁹Do not grumble against one another, brothers, ^(R)so that you may not be judged; behold, ^(S)the Judge is standing ^(T)at the door. ¹⁰As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take ^(U)the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. ¹¹Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of ^(V)the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen ^(W)the purpose of the Lord, how ^(X)the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

¹²But above all, my brothers, ^(Y)do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

The Prayer of Faith

¹³Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him ^(Z)sing praise. ¹⁴Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, ^(AA)anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. ¹⁵And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And ^(AB)if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. ¹⁶Therefore, ^(AC)confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, ^(AD)that you may be healed. ^(AE)The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.^[b] ¹⁷Elijah was a man ^(AF)with a nature like ours, and ^(AG)he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for ^(AH)three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. ¹⁸^(AI)Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.

¹⁹My brothers, ^(AJ)if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone ^(AK)brings him back, ²⁰let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering ^(AL)will save his soul from death and ^(AM)will cover a multitude of sins.
