27 Do not boast about tomorrow,
    (A)for you do not know what a day may bring.
Let (B)another praise you, and not your own mouth;
    a stranger, and not your own lips.
A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty,
    but (C)a fool's provocation is heavier than both.
Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming,
    but who can stand before (D)jealousy?
(E)Better is open rebuke
    than hidden love.
Faithful are (F)the wounds of a friend;
    profuse are the kisses of an enemy.
One who is full loathes (G)honey,
    but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet.
Like (H)a bird that strays from its nest
    is a man who strays from his home.
(I)Oil and perfume make the heart glad,
    and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.[a]
10 Do not forsake your friend and (J)your father's friend,
    and do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity.
(K)Better is a neighbor who is near
    than a brother who is far away.
11 (L)Be wise, (M)my son, and (N)make my heart glad,
    that I may (O)answer him who reproaches me.
12 (P)The prudent sees danger and hides himself,
    but (Q)the simple go on and suffer for it.
13 (R)Take a man's garment when he has put up security for a stranger,
    and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for an adulteress.[b]
14 Whoever blesses his neighbor with a loud voice,
    rising early in the morning,
    will be counted as cursing.
15 (S)A continual dripping on a rainy day
    and a quarrelsome wife are alike;
16 to restrain her is to restrain the wind
    or to grasp[c] oil in one's right hand.
17 Iron sharpens iron,
    and one man sharpens another.[d]
18 (T)Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,
    and he who (U)guards his master will be honored.
19 As in water face reflects face,
    so the heart of man reflects the man.
20 (V)Sheol and Abaddon are (W)never satisfied,
    and (X)never satisfied are the eyes of man.
21 (Y)The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold,
    and a man is tested by his praise.
22 (Z)Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle
    along with crushed grain,
    yet his folly will not depart from him.

23 (AA)Know well the condition of your flocks,
    and (AB)give attention to your herds,
24 for (AC)riches do not last forever;
    and does a crown endure to all generations?
25 (AD)When the grass is gone and the new growth appears
    and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered,
26 (AE)the lambs will provide your clothing,
    and the goats the price of a field.
27 (AF)There will be enough goats' milk for your food,
    for the food of your household
    and maintenance for your girls.

Daniel and the Lions' Den

It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom (A)120 (B)satraps, to be throughout the whole kingdom; and over them (C)three high officials, of whom Daniel was one, to whom these (D)satraps should give account, so that the king might suffer no loss. Then this Daniel became (E)distinguished above all (F)the other high officials and (G)satraps, because (H)an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned (I)to set him over the whole kingdom. Then (J)the high officials and (K)the satraps (L)sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, (M)but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, (N)and no error or fault was found in him. Then these men said, “We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God.”

Then these (O)high officials and (P)satraps came by agreement[a] to the king and said to him, “O (Q)King Darius, live forever! All the (R)high officials of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the (S)counselors and the governors are agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an (T)injunction, that whoever makes petition to any god or man for thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions. Now, O king, establish (U)the injunction and sign the document, so that it cannot be changed, according to (V)the law of (W)the Medes and the Persians, (X)which cannot be revoked.” Therefore King Darius signed the document and (Y)injunction.

10 When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where (Z)he had windows in his upper chamber open (AA)toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees (AB)three times a day and prayed and (AC)gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously. 11 Then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petition and plea before his God. 12 Then they (AD)came near and said before the king, concerning the injunction, “O king! Did you not sign (AE)an injunction, that anyone who makes petition to any god or man within thirty days except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered and said, “The thing stands fast, according to the law of (AF)the Medes and Persians, (AG)which cannot be revoked.” 13 Then they answered and said before the king, (AH)“Daniel, who is one (AI)of the exiles (AJ)from Judah, (AK)pays no attention to you, O king, or (AL)the injunction you have signed, but makes his petition (AM)three times a day.”

14 Then (AN)the king, when he heard these words, (AO)was much distressed and set his mind to deliver Daniel. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him. 15 Then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king, “Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no (AP)injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.”

16 Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king declared[b] to Daniel, “May (AQ)your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!” 17 (AR)And a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den, (AS)and the king sealed it (AT)with his own signet and with the signet of his (AU)lords, that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel. 18 Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; (AV)no diversions were brought to him, and (AW)sleep fled from him.

19 Then, at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions. 20 As he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish. The king declared to Daniel, “O Daniel, servant of (AX)the living God, (AY)has your God, whom you serve continually, (AZ)been able to deliver you from the lions?” 21 Then Daniel said to the king, (BA)“O king, live forever! 22 My God (BB)sent his angel (BC)and shut the lions' mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless (BD)before him; (BE)and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.” 23 Then the king was exceedingly glad, and commanded that Daniel be taken up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and (BF)no kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. 24 And the king commanded, and (BG)those men who had maliciously accused Daniel were brought and cast into the den of lions—they, their children, and their wives. And before they reached the bottom of the den, the lions overpowered them and broke all their bones in pieces.

25 Then King Darius wrote to all (BH)the peoples, nations, and languages (BI)that dwell in all the earth: (BJ)“Peace be multiplied to you. 26 (BK)I make a decree, that in all my royal dominion (BL)people are to tremble and fear before the God of Daniel,

for (BM)he is (BN)the living God,
    enduring forever;
his kingdom shall never be destroyed,
    (BO)and his dominion shall be (BP)to the end.
27 He delivers and rescues;
    he works (BQ)signs and wonders
    in heaven and on earth,
he who has (BR)saved Daniel
    from the power of the lions.”

28 So this Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and (BS)the reign of (BT)Cyrus the Persian.

Daniel's Vision of the Four Beasts

In the first year of (BU)Belshazzar king of Babylon, (BV)Daniel saw a dream and (BW)visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter. Daniel declared,[c] “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, (BX)the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. And four great beasts (BY)came up out of the sea, different from one another. The first was like a lion and had eagles' wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it. And behold, (BZ)another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’ After this I looked, and behold, another, like a (CA)leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and (CB)dominion was given to it. After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, (CC)terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; (CD)it devoured and broke in pieces (CE)and stamped what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and (CF)it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and behold, (CG)there came up among them another horn, a little one, (CH)before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and (CI)a mouth speaking great things.

The Ancient of Days Reigns

“As I looked,

(CJ)thrones were placed,
    and the (CK)Ancient of Days took his seat;
(CL)his clothing was white as snow,
    and (CM)the hair of his head like pure wool;
his throne was fiery flames;
    (CN)its wheels were burning fire.
10 (CO)A stream of fire issued
    and came out from before him;
(CP)a thousand thousands (CQ)served him,
    (CR)and ten thousand times ten thousand (CS)stood before him;
the (CT)court sat in judgment,
    and (CU)the books were opened.

11 “I looked then because of the sound of (CV)the great words that the horn was speaking. And as I looked, (CW)the beast was killed, and its body destroyed (CX)and given over to be burned with fire. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, (CY)their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

The Son of Man Is Given Dominion

13 “I saw in the night visions,

and (CZ)behold, with the clouds of heaven
    there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the (DA)Ancient of Days
    and was presented before him.
14 (DB)And to him was given dominion
    and glory and a kingdom,
that all (DC)peoples, nations, and languages
    should serve him;
(DD)his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
    which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
    that shall not be destroyed.

Daniel's Vision Interpreted

15 “As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me[d] was anxious, and (DE)the visions of my head alarmed me. 16 I approached one of those who stood there and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of the things. 17 (DF)‘These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. 18 But (DG)the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.’

19 “Then I desired to know the truth about (DH)the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying, with its teeth of iron and claws of bronze, and which devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet, 20 (DI)and about the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn that came up and before which three of them fell, the horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and that seemed greater than its companions. 21 As I looked, this horn (DJ)made war with the saints and prevailed over them, 22 until the (DK)Ancient of Days came, and (DL)judgment was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when (DM)the saints possessed the kingdom.

23 “Thus he said: ‘As for (DN)the fourth beast,

there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth,
    which shall be different from all the kingdoms,
and it shall devour the whole earth,
    and trample it down, and break it to pieces.
24 As for the ten horns,
out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise,
    and another shall arise after them;
he shall be different from the former ones,
    and shall put down three kings.
25 (DO)He shall speak words against the Most High,
    and shall wear out the saints of the Most High,
    and shall think to (DP)change the times and the law;
and they shall be given into his hand
    for (DQ)a time, times, and half a time.
26 (DR)But the court shall sit in judgment,
    and (DS)his dominion shall be taken away,
    to be consumed and destroyed (DT)to the end.
27 (DU)And the kingdom and the dominion
    and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven
    shall be given to the people of (DV)the saints of the Most High;
(DW)his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom,
    and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’[e]

28 “Here is the end of the matter. (DX)As for me, Daniel, my (DY)thoughts greatly alarmed me, (DZ)and my color changed, but (EA)I kept the matter in my heart.”

Daniel's Vision of the Ram and the Goat

In the third year of the reign of (EB)King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, (EC)after that which appeared to me (ED)at the first. And I saw in the vision; and when I saw, I was in (EE)Susa the citadel, which is in the province of (EF)Elam. And (EG)I saw in the vision, (EH)and I was at the (EI)Ulai canal. I raised my eyes and saw, and behold, (EJ)a ram standing on the bank of the canal. It had two horns, and both horns were high, but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last. I saw (EK)the ram charging westward and northward and southward. No (EL)beast (EM)could stand before him, (EN)and there was no one who could rescue from his power. (EO)He did as he pleased and (EP)became great.

As I was considering, behold, a (EQ)male goat came from the west across the face of the whole earth, without touching the ground. And the goat had (ER)a conspicuous horn between his eyes. He came to (ES)the ram with the two horns, which I had seen standing on the bank of the canal, (ET)and he ran at him in his powerful wrath. I saw him come close to the ram, (EU)and he was enraged against him and struck the ram and broke his two horns. (EV)And the ram had no power to stand before him, but he (EW)cast him down to the ground and trampled on him. And there was no one who could rescue the ram from his power. Then (EX)the goat (EY)became exceedingly great, but when he was strong, the great horn was broken, and instead of it there came up four (EZ)conspicuous horns toward (FA)the four winds of heaven.

Out of one of them came (FB)a little horn, which grew exceedingly great toward (FC)the south, toward the east, and toward (FD)the glorious land. 10 (FE)It grew great, (FF)even to the host of heaven. And some of the host (FG)and some[f] of (FH)the stars it threw down to the ground and (FI)trampled on them. 11 (FJ)It became great, even as great as (FK)the Prince of the host. (FL)And the regular burnt offering was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was overthrown. 12 And a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering because of transgression,[g] and it will throw truth to the ground, and (FM)it will act and prosper. 13 Then I heard (FN)a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who spoke, (FO)“For how long is the vision concerning the regular burnt offering, (FP)the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and host to be trampled underfoot?” 14 And he said to me,[h] “For 2,300 (FQ)evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.”

The Interpretation of the Vision

15 When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I (FR)sought to understand it. And behold, there stood before me one having (FS)the appearance of a man. 16 (FT)And I heard a man's voice (FU)between the banks of the (FV)Ulai, and it called, (FW)“Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.” 17 So he came near where I stood. And when he came, (FX)I was frightened (FY)and fell on my face. But he said to me, “Understand, (FZ)O son of man, that the vision is for (GA)the time of the end.”

18 And when he had spoken to me, (GB)I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground. But (GC)he touched me and made me stand up. 19 He said, “Behold, I will make known to you what shall be at the latter end of (GD)the indignation, for it refers to (GE)the appointed time of the end. 20 As for (GF)the ram that you saw with the two horns, these are the kings of (GG)Media and Persia. 21 And (GH)the goat[i] is the king of Greece. And (GI)the great horn between his eyes is (GJ)the first king. 22 (GK)As for the horn that was broken, in place of which four others arose, four kingdoms shall arise from his[j] nation, (GL)but not with his power. 23 And at the latter end of their kingdom, when the transgressors have reached their limit, a king of bold face, one who understands riddles, shall arise. 24 His power shall be great—(GM)but not by his own power; and he shall cause fearful destruction (GN)and shall succeed in what he does, (GO)and destroy mighty men and the people who are the saints. 25 (GP)By his cunning he shall make deceit prosper under his hand, and in his own mind (GQ)he shall become great. (GR)Without warning he shall destroy many. And he (GS)shall even rise up against the Prince of princes, and he shall be broken—but (GT)by no human hand. 26 The vision of (GU)the evenings and the mornings that has been told (GV)is true, but (GW)seal up the vision, (GX)for it refers to many days from now.”

27 And (GY)I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for some days. Then I rose and went about the king's business, but I was appalled by the vision (GZ)and did not understand it.

Daniel in the Den of Lions

[a]It pleased Darius(A) to appoint 120 satraps(B) to rule throughout the kingdom, with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel.(C) The satraps were made accountable(D) to them so that the king might not suffer loss. Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.(E) At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges(F) against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”(G)

So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever!(H) The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors(I) have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den.(J) Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(K) So King Darius put the decree in writing.

10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward(L) Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees(M) and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.(N) 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.(O) 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”

The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(P)

13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,(Q) pays no attention(R) to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed;(S) he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”(T)

16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den.(U) The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue(V) you!”

17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed(W) it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating(X) and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.(Y)

19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”(Z)

21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever!(AA) 22 My God sent his angel,(AB) and he shut the mouths of the lions.(AC) They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight.(AD) Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”

23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound(AE) was found on him, because he had trusted(AF) in his God.

24 At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den,(AG) along with their wives and children.(AH) And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.(AI)

25 Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language(AJ) in all the earth:

“May you prosper greatly!(AK)

26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence(AL) the God of Daniel.(AM)

“For he is the living God(AN)
    and he endures forever;(AO)
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
    his dominion will never end.(AP)
27 He rescues and he saves;(AQ)
    he performs signs and wonders(AR)
    in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
    from the power of the lions.”(AS)

28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus[b](AT) the Persian.(AU)

Daniel’s Dream of Four Beasts

In the first year of Belshazzar(AV) king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions(AW) passed through his mind(AX) as he was lying in bed.(AY) He wrote(AZ) down the substance of his dream.

Daniel said: “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven(BA) churning up the great sea. Four great beasts,(BB) each different from the others, came up out of the sea.

“The first was like a lion,(BC) and it had the wings of an eagle.(BD) I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind of a human was given to it.

“And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of flesh!’(BE)

“After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard.(BF) And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.

“After that, in my vision(BG) at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron(BH) teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled(BI) underfoot whatever was left.(BJ) It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.(BK)

“While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little(BL) one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being(BM) and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(BN)

“As I looked,

“thrones were set in place,
    and the Ancient of Days(BO) took his seat.(BP)
His clothing was as white as snow;(BQ)
    the hair of his head was white like wool.(BR)
His throne was flaming with fire,
    and its wheels(BS) were all ablaze.
10 A river of fire(BT) was flowing,
    coming out from before him.(BU)
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
    ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
    and the books(BV) were opened.

11 “Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking.(BW) I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.(BX) 12 (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)

13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,[c](BY) coming(BZ) with the clouds of heaven.(CA) He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority,(CB) glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him.(CC) His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom(CD) is one that will never be destroyed.(CE)

The Interpretation of the Dream

15 “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.(CF) 16 I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.

“So he told me and gave me the interpretation(CG) of these things: 17 ‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. 18 But the holy people(CH) of the Most High will receive the kingdom(CI) and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.’(CJ)

19 “Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. 20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns(CK) on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(CL) 21 As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them,(CM) 22 until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.(CN)

23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it.(CO) 24 The ten horns(CP) are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High(CQ) and oppress his holy people(CR) and try to change the set times(CS) and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.[d](CT)

26 “‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed(CU) forever. 27 Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms(CV) under heaven will be handed over to the holy people(CW) of the Most High.(CX) His kingdom will be an everlasting(CY) kingdom, and all rulers will worship(CZ) and obey him.’

28 “This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled(DA) by my thoughts,(DB) and my face turned pale,(DC) but I kept the matter to myself.”

Daniel’s Vision of a Ram and a Goat

In the third year of King Belshazzar’s(DD) reign, I, Daniel, had a vision,(DE) after the one that had already appeared to me. In my vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa(DF) in the province of Elam;(DG) in the vision I was beside the Ulai Canal. I looked up,(DH) and there before me was a ram(DI) with two horns, standing beside the canal, and the horns were long. One of the horns was longer than the other but grew up later. I watched the ram as it charged toward the west and the north and the south. No animal could stand against it, and none could rescue from its power.(DJ) It did as it pleased(DK) and became great.

As I was thinking about this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between its eyes came from the west, crossing the whole earth without touching the ground. It came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and charged at it in great rage. I saw it attack the ram furiously, striking the ram and shattering its two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against it; the goat knocked it to the ground and trampled on it,(DL) and none could rescue the ram from its power.(DM) The goat became very great, but at the height of its power the large horn was broken off,(DN) and in its place four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven.(DO)

Out of one of them came another horn, which started small(DP) but grew in power to the south and to the east and toward the Beautiful Land.(DQ) 10 It grew until it reached(DR) the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth(DS) and trampled(DT) on them. 11 It set itself up to be as great as the commander(DU) of the army of the Lord;(DV) it took away the daily sacrifice(DW) from the Lord, and his sanctuary was thrown down.(DX) 12 Because of rebellion, the Lord’s people[e] and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground.(DY)

13 Then I heard a holy one(DZ) speaking, and another holy one said to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled(EA)—the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot(EB) of the Lord’s people?”

14 He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated.”(EC)

The Interpretation of the Vision

15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision(ED) and trying to understand it, there before me stood one who looked like a man.(EE) 16 And I heard a man’s voice from the Ulai(EF) calling, “Gabriel,(EG) tell this man the meaning of the vision.”(EH)

17 As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate.(EI) “Son of man,”[f] he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”(EJ)

18 While he was speaking to me, I was in a deep sleep, with my face to the ground.(EK) Then he touched me and raised me to my feet.(EL)

19 He said: “I am going to tell you what will happen later in the time of wrath,(EM) because the vision concerns the appointed time(EN) of the end.[g](EO) 20 The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia.(EP) 21 The shaggy goat is the king of Greece,(EQ) and the large horn between its eyes is the first king.(ER) 22 The four horns that replaced the one that was broken off represent four kingdoms that will emerge from his nation but will not have the same power.

23 “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue, will arise. 24 He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy those who are mighty, the holy people.(ES) 25 He will cause deceit(ET) to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes.(EU) Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.(EV)

26 “The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been given you is true,(EW) but seal(EX) up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.”(EY)

27 I, Daniel, was worn out. I lay exhausted(EZ) for several days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business.(FA) I was appalled(FB) by the vision; it was beyond understanding.

Rejoicing in Heaven

19 After this I heard (A)what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out,

“Hallelujah!
(B)Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,
    for (C)his judgments are true and just;
for he has judged (D)the great prostitute
    who corrupted the earth with her immorality,
and (E)has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”

Once more they cried out,

“Hallelujah!
(F)The smoke from her goes up forever and ever.”

And (G)the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!” And from the throne came a voice saying,

(H)“Praise our God,
    all you his servants,
(I)you who fear him,
    small and great.”

The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

Then I heard what seemed to be (J)the voice of a great multitude, like (K)the roar of many waters and (L)like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,

“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
    the Almighty (M)reigns.
Let us rejoice and exult
    and give him the glory,
for (N)the marriage of the Lamb has come,
    and (O)his Bride has made herself ready;
(P)it was granted her to clothe herself
    with fine linen, bright and pure”—

for the fine linen is (Q)the righteous deeds of the saints.

And the angel said[a] to me, “Write this: (R)Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, (S)“These are the true words of God.” 10 Then (T)I fell down at his feet to worship him, (U)but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to (V)the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

The Rider on a White Horse

11 Then I saw (W)heaven opened, and behold, (X)a white horse! The one sitting on it is called (Y)Faithful and True, and (Z)in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 (AA)His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are (AB)many diadems, and he has (AC)a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in (AD)a robe dipped in[b] blood, and the name by which he is called is (AE)The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, (AF)arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, (AG)were following him on white horses. 15 (AH)From his mouth comes a sharp sword (AI)with which to strike down the nations, and (AJ)he will rule[c] them with a rod of iron. (AK)He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh (AL)he has a name written, (AM)King of kings and Lord of lords.

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to (AN)all the birds that fly directly overhead, (AO)“Come, gather for (AP)the great supper of God, 18 (AQ)to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave,[d] both small and great.” 19 And I saw (AR)the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies (AS)gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. 20 And the beast was captured, and with it (AT)the false prophet (AU)who in its presence[e] had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who (AV)worshiped its image. These two were (AW)thrown alive into the lake of (AX)fire that burns with sulfur. 21 And the rest were slain by the sword (AY)that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and (AZ)all the birds were gorged with their flesh.

Threefold Hallelujah Over Babylon’s Fall

19 After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude(A) in heaven shouting:

“Hallelujah!(B)
Salvation(C) and glory and power(D) belong to our God,
    for true and just are his judgments.(E)
He has condemned the great prostitute(F)
    who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”(G)

And again they shouted:

“Hallelujah!(H)
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”(I)

The twenty-four elders(J) and the four living creatures(K) fell down(L) and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:

“Amen, Hallelujah!”(M)

Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

“Praise our God,
    all you his servants,(N)
you who fear him,
    both great and small!”(O)

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude,(P) like the roar of rushing waters(Q) and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

“Hallelujah!(R)
    For our Lord God Almighty(S) reigns.(T)
Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!(U)
For the wedding of the Lamb(V) has come,
    and his bride(W) has made herself ready.
Fine linen,(X) bright and clean,
    was given her to wear.”

(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts(Y) of God’s holy people.)

Then the angel said to me,(Z) “Write this:(AA) Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!”(AB) And he added, “These are the true words of God.”(AC)

10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him.(AD) But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!(AE) For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”(AF)

The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast

11 I saw heaven standing open(AG) and there before me was a white horse, whose rider(AH) is called Faithful and True.(AI) With justice he judges and wages war.(AJ) 12 His eyes are like blazing fire,(AK) and on his head are many crowns.(AL) He has a name written on him(AM) that no one knows but he himself.(AN) 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,(AO) and his name is the Word of God.(AP) 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen,(AQ) white(AR) and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword(AS) with which to strike down(AT) the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[a](AU) He treads the winepress(AV) of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:(AW)

king of kings and lord of lords.(AX)

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds(AY) flying in midair,(AZ) “Come,(BA) gather together for the great supper of God,(BB) 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people,(BC) free and slave,(BD) great and small.”(BE)

19 Then I saw the beast(BF) and the kings of the earth(BG) and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse(BH) and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet(BI) who had performed the signs(BJ) on its behalf.(BK) With these signs he had deluded(BL) those who had received the mark of the beast(BM) and worshiped its image.(BN) The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake(BO) of burning sulfur.(BP) 21 The rest were killed with the sword(BQ) coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse,(BR) and all the birds(BS) gorged themselves on their flesh.
