No hay nada como la sabiduría

Queridos jovencitos:
cuando su padre los instruya,
préstenle atención,
si realmente quieren aprender.
Yo, como maestro,
les doy este buen consejo:
no abandonen sus enseñanzas.
Yo también fui niño;
tuve un padre y una madre
que me trataban con ternura.
Mi padre me dio este consejo:
«Grábate bien lo que te digo,
y haz lo que te mando;
así tendrás larga vida.
Hazte cada vez
más sabio y entendido;
nunca olvides mis enseñanzas.
¡Jamás te apartes de ellas!
Si amas a la sabiduría
y nunca la abandonas,
ella te cuidará y te protegerá.
Lo que realmente importa
es que cada día seas más sabio
y que aumentes tus conocimientos,
aunque tengas que vender
todo lo que poseas.
Valoriza el conocimiento,
y tu vida tendrá más valor;
si haces tuyo el conocimiento,
todos te tratarán con respeto,
y quedarán admirados
de tu gran sabiduría.

10 »Escúchame, jovencito:
hazme caso y vivirás muchos años.
11 Yo, como maestro,
te enseño a vivir sabiamente
y a siempre hacer el bien.
12 Vayas rápido o despacio,
no tendrás ningún problema
para alcanzar el éxito.
13 Acepta mis enseñanzas
y no te apartes de ellas;
cuídalas mucho,
que de ellas depende tu vida.
14 No te juntes con gente malvada
ni sigas su mal ejemplo.
15 ¡Aléjate de su compañía!
¡Aléjate, y sigue adelante!
16 Esa gente no duerme
hasta que hace algo malo;
¡no descansa hasta destruir a alguien!
17 En vez de comer,
se satisface cometiendo maldades;
en vez de beber,
festeja la violencia que comete.

18 »La vida de los hombres buenos
brilla como la luz de la mañana:
va siendo más y más brillante,
hasta que alcanza todo su esplendor.
19 La vida de los malvados
es todo lo contrario:
es como una gran oscuridad
donde no saben ni en qué tropiezan.

20 »Querido jovencito,
escucha bien lo que te digo.
21 Grábate bien mis enseñanzas,
y no te apartes de ellas,
22 pues son una fuente de vida
para quienes las encuentran;
son el remedio para una vida mejor.
23 Y sobre todas las cosas,
cuida tu mente,
porque ella es la fuente de la vida.
24 No te rebajes diciendo
palabras malas e indecentes.
25 Pon siempre tu mirada
en lo que está por venir.
26 Corrige tu conducta,
afirma todas tus acciones.
27 Por nada de este mundo
dejes de hacer el bien;
¡apártate de la maldad!»

Your Life Is at Stake

1-2 Listen, friends, to some fatherly advice;
    sit up and take notice so you’ll know how to live.
I’m giving you good counsel;
    don’t let it go in one ear and out the other.

3-9 When I was a boy at my father’s knee,
    the pride and joy of my mother,
He would sit me down and drill me:
    “Take this to heart. Do what I tell you—live!
Sell everything and buy Wisdom! Forage for Understanding!
    Don’t forget one word! Don’t deviate an inch!
Never walk away from Wisdom—she guards your life;
    love her—she keeps her eye on you.
Above all and before all, do this: Get Wisdom!
    Write this at the top of your list: Get Understanding!
Throw your arms around her—believe me, you won’t regret it;
    never let her go—she’ll make your life glorious.
She’ll garland your life with grace,
    she’ll festoon your days with beauty.”

10-15 Dear friend, take my advice;
    it will add years to your life.
I’m writing out clear directions to Wisdom Way,
    I’m drawing a map to Righteous Road.
I don’t want you ending up in blind alleys,
    or wasting time making wrong turns.
Hold tight to good advice; don’t relax your grip.
    Guard it well—your life is at stake!
Don’t take Wicked Bypass;
    don’t so much as set foot on that road.
Stay clear of it; give it a wide berth.
    Make a detour and be on your way.

16-17 Evil people are restless
    unless they’re making trouble;
They can’t get a good night’s sleep
    unless they’ve made life miserable for somebody.
Perversity is their food and drink,
    violence their drug of choice.

18-19 The ways of right-living people glow with light;
    the longer they live, the brighter they shine.
But the road of wrongdoing gets darker and darker—
    travelers can’t see a thing; they fall flat on their faces.

Learn It by Heart

20-22 Dear friend, listen well to my words;
    tune your ears to my voice.
Keep my message in plain view at all times.
    Concentrate! Learn it by heart!
Those who discover these words live, really live;
    body and soul, they’re bursting with health.

23-27 Keep vigilant watch over your heart;
    that’s where life starts.
Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth;
    avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip.
Keep your eyes straight ahead;
    ignore all sideshow distractions.
Watch your step,
    and the road will stretch out smooth before you.
Look neither right nor left;
    leave evil in the dust.

Get Wisdom at Any Cost

Listen, my sons,(A) to a father’s instruction;(B)
    pay attention and gain understanding.(C)
I give you sound learning,
    so do not forsake my teaching.
For I too was a son to my father,
    still tender, and cherished by my mother.
Then he taught me, and he said to me,
    “Take hold(D) of my words with all your heart;
    keep my commands, and you will live.(E)
Get wisdom,(F) get understanding;
    do not forget my words or turn away from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;(G)
    love her, and she will watch over you.(H)
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get[a] wisdom.
    Though it cost all(I) you have,[b] get understanding.(J)
Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
    embrace her, and she will honor you.(K)
She will give you a garland to grace your head
    and present you with a glorious crown.(L)

10 Listen, my son,(M) accept what I say,
    and the years of your life will be many.(N)
11 I instruct(O) you in the way of wisdom
    and lead you along straight paths.(P)
12 When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;
    when you run, you will not stumble.(Q)
13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go;
    guard it well, for it is your life.(R)
14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked
    or walk in the way of evildoers.(S)
15 Avoid it, do not travel on it;
    turn from it and go on your way.
16 For they cannot rest until they do evil;(T)
    they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.
17 They eat the bread of wickedness
    and drink the wine of violence.(U)

18 The path of the righteous(V) is like the morning sun,(W)
    shining ever brighter till the full light of day.(X)
19 But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;(Y)
    they do not know what makes them stumble.(Z)

20 My son,(AA) pay attention to what I say;
    turn your ear to my words.(AB)
21 Do not let them out of your sight,(AC)
    keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them
    and health to one’s whole body.(AD)
23 Above all else, guard(AE) your heart,
    for everything you do flows from it.(AF)
24 Keep your mouth free of perversity;
    keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
25 Let your eyes(AG) look straight ahead;
    fix your gaze directly before you.
26 Give careful thought to the[c] paths for your feet(AH)
    and be steadfast in all your ways.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left;(AI)
    keep your foot from evil.

A Father’s Instruction

Hear, O children, the instruction of a father,
And pay attention [and be willing to learn] so that you may gain understanding and intelligent discernment.

For I give you good doctrine;
Do not [a]turn away from my instruction.

When I was a son with my father (David),
Tender and the only son in the sight of my mother (Bathsheba),

He taught me and said to me,
“Let your heart hold fast my words;
Keep my commandments and live.(A)

“Get [skillful and godly] wisdom! Acquire understanding [actively seek spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation]!
Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth.

“Do not [b]turn away from her (Wisdom) and she will guard and protect you;
Love her, and she will watch over you.

“The beginning of wisdom is: Get [skillful and godly] wisdom [it is preeminent]!
And with all your acquiring, get understanding [actively seek spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation].(B)

“Prize wisdom [and exalt her], and she will exalt you;
She will honor you if you embrace her.

“She will place on your head a garland of grace;
She will present you with a crown of beauty and glory.”

10
Hear, my son, and accept my sayings,
And the years of your life will be many.
11
I have instructed you in the way of [skillful and godly] wisdom;
I have led you in upright paths.
12
When you walk, your steps will not be impeded [for your path will be clear and open];
And when you run, you will not stumble.
13
Take hold of instruction; [actively seek it, grip it firmly and] do not let go.
Guard her, for she is your life.
14
Do not enter the path of the wicked,
And do not go the way of evil men.
15
Avoid it, do not travel on it;
Turn away from it and pass on.
16
For the wicked cannot sleep unless they do evil;
And they are deprived of sleep unless they make someone stumble and fall.
17
For they eat the bread of wickedness
And drink the wine of violence.
18
But the path of the just (righteous) is like the light of dawn,
That shines brighter and brighter until [it reaches its full strength and glory in] the perfect day.(C)
19
The way of the wicked is like [deep] darkness;
They do not know over what they stumble.(D)

20
My son, pay attention to my words and be willing to learn;
Open your ears to my sayings.
21
Do not let them escape from your sight;
Keep them in the center of your heart.
22
For they are life to those who find them,
And healing and health to all their flesh.
23
Watch over your heart with all diligence,
For from it flow the springs of life.
24
Put away from you a deceitful (lying, misleading) mouth,
And put devious lips far from you.
25
Let your eyes look directly ahead [toward the path of moral courage]
And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you [toward the path of integrity].
26
Consider well and watch carefully the path of your feet,
And all your ways will be steadfast and sure.
27
Do not turn away to the right nor to the left [where evil may lurk];
Turn your foot from [the path of] evil.
